MacGregor Tourney Colokrom Irons Confusion

At Christmas time I had my gf pick me up a set of MacGregor M85 Tourney Colokrom Irons from her hometown.

When I received them I was quite disappointed because the irons didn’t have any serial numbers and it was a mix of M85 and M75 irons. I thought that was odd but didn’t enquire because the owner was a woman who had never golfed. All the irons had the Green rocket shafts.

The grips were also not the usual leather ones I have seen in my other sets either. They looked like cheap plastic which confused me even more. The reason I say this is because I once took off the leather grips that the Colokrom tourney come on and it was such an ordeal!

Tonight I was fiddling with them and saw stitching on the grips. I think these are actually leather and I’m just a fool. Can someone please confirm?

Anybody have any clue why it would be a mixed set ? They came in a cool presentation box too.

This is the grip I’m used to seeing on Tourney Colokroms. It’s a 1950’s gooey nasty mess if you try to take off these leathers.

Do the stitched grips have any identification on the grip cap? My guess is aftermarket as I don't ever recall seeing anything but factory wrapped leather.

That stitched leather grip looks like a slip-on product that Lamkin used to make and sell. Not sure when they stopped producing it, but it was still available in the 1980s.

So what # of irons do you have that are m75 and and which ones are m85?

yes those grips on your clubs sure look like they are leather.

the box is neat but as you can tell by the display box branding they aren’t for MacGregors at all but for H&B clubs.

maybe I have the rest of your m75’s! I have 2-4-6-8. Grips on mine were replaced at one time as they are rubber.

I believe they are Lamkin slip ons. I’ll go get them from my storage unit to investigate. I just don’t understand why it was such an ordeal for me to replace the grips on my first set of badly damaged M75s a few years ago and this person was able to slide on some new grips with ease? ??‍♂️ Especially if they came from the same few years of production.

Also in regards to the green rocket shafts? Are the shafts in the M75 actually flimsier than the ones in the M85..... as in there are three different rocket shaft flexes?

Great set of irons you have. It is weird that you’d have a mix of M85 and M75 irons. The ferrules look to be original so also weird that there is no serial numbers on them.

The Colokroms were only produced for 3 years, 1955-57, and looking at the Kaplan book it shows that the 1955 models came with True Temper Tourney shafts, then in 1956 they switched to TT Rocket shafts for one year, then back to TT Tourney shafts for 1957. So at least your clubs are all from the same year.

The M75s had a Rocket R medium flex shaft, the M85s had a Rocket S medium-stiff shaft. The M75 was designed for the average golfer and M85 had a heavier head and stiffer shaft for the professional and top amateur player.

So which irons did you get in m75 vs m85?

I have a set of M65. They were advertised and purchased as M85. I immediately noticed the very narrow shaft as it meets the ferrule but it took examination under a magnifying glass to spot the 8 was intact a 6!

Keeping them for my senior days which in fairness aren't that far off now!

Haha I have a whole line up of classic MacGregors that will serve me well into my old age as I weaken and shrink.
