Swing change conundrum - how would you proceed?

Recommended Posts

Context

I have been working on my swing for the last year and a half or so. Here is my progress so far:

49810142328_c3ca097a1f_o.png

Left is fall 2018 and right is spring 2020.

This all came as a result of several online lessons with Monte and Dan C. Very helpful. I feel I have been making progress in a few areas:

Limiting the right knee diving forward in transitionFlexing the lead wristSupination lead forearm through impactAdding right side bend

There are yet a few areas of improvement highlighted in the lessons that I would wish to make:

Extend rear knee in the backswing for better right hip depthGet the right elbow moving more in front of my body in the downswingConundrum

So far this Spring my ball striking has improved a good amount. I've reduced penalties off the tee by a lot. My GIR has increased a good amount as well. I averaged 51% GIR in 2019. So far this Spring I've increased that average to 57% with a few 9 hole rounds with 7 GIR. I also posted a score of 34 (one under par) which ties a personal best from back when I was in college on the golf team playing every day. Subjectively speaking the more stable lower body movement feels more effortless and repeatable. I also really enjoy how I'm controlling the clubface now. Adding some flexion and supination was a real turning point for me. I feel like the clubhead is swinging on a better arc, more natural, less compensations. I'm happy to see a lot of the work and the insight from the lessons is producing progress.

However I also feel like I have room for improvement. My right knee stays flexed in the backswing and so I don't have a lot of room for my right elbow. It gets stuck behind my rib cage. These would be the next areas of focus. I can make some slower swings moving in that general direction (not saying this is perfect, just an idea of where I'm going):

Comparison with current swing:

49830681678_173e7c3a67_o.jpgConclusion

So I'm feeling torn right now. I'm happy with the progress I've made. You can see it on video and in my scores. The changes seen in the current swing feel natural and I can perform them without thought or focus just on the range. I feel that I'll shot better scores this season committing to my current swing as is. I also have a better idea that it takes a pretty significant amount of time and commitment to make a change. Like months / years. While I can make a better motion with the future changes, I feel that I'm a long ways off before that takes root and comes with me out onto the course.

However on the other side I think it is important to always strive to improve. I just stated that making a swing change has improved my swing and scores. And while my current swing is a bit better, there is still room to improve. I'll also admit that I've grown to really enjoy the process. Hitting balls on my backyard net and grinding new movement patterns is a great outlet for me that I have grown to enjoy. I have three young kids and so getting out to play 9 or 18 can sometimes be tough. But it works great to go out to my back yard whenever I wish. I would also highlight that my nature is to tinker, learn, and explore. I'm not really one to just let it lie.

What Would You Do

So based on the above, how would you proceed? I see three options:

Groove my current swing permanentlyPlay the current swing this year and pick up swing changes again next winterPlay the current swing, but also continue to work on the new movements as the 'end goal'

Let me start off by saying getting the trail leg to extend is a real pain in the @ss when you're used to keeping that leg flexed. I'm still working on it after doing multiple lessons with Dan C. and Monte over the years. I think its something you will always have to monitor since it feels so natural to stay flexed. So I would say go with option 3. Separate working on mechanics from playing golf. Work on making progress on the range and then during the round play with what you brought and focus on scoring.

On a side note, I've seen some analysis on Brooks Koepka and his lack of hip depth in the bs. I'd be curious to hear if instructors think this is a workable pattern for amateurs who struggle with extending the trail leg? Obviously Brooks has athletic gifts that most of us do not but If it's an option it might be an avenue worth pursuing.

Thanks for the input. I think it is workable to work on it while separating that from playing. When I go play I have to turn that off, and so if it means I revert back to the current swing so be it.

I noticed that for my swing, the right elbow getting stuck was directly related to lack of right hip depth in the BS. That was a big eye opener for me. By extending the knee and getting the hip to really open I don't have to pull the right arm behind my ribcage to make a full turn. Then that's my only shot at getting the elbow in front. I've noticed that I don't have excellent flexibility in my shoulder to externally rotate super far. So I wonder if Brooks is able to pull it off because he has better than average flexibility / strength?

I know what you mean about the that right arm around the rib cage move. Dan C. gave me the stick drill to really work on my takeaway and backswing plane. I've noticed that by getting a little steeper in the backswing and keeping the arms more in front of my chest I can get away with the lack of hip depth assuming I transition correctly and don't spin the hips or shoulders open. I saw a video recently, (I thing it was by Jake Hutt), about pushing the right glute back in transition. This move creates the depth I was lacking in the backswing while simultaneously getting my left hip and knee to open up. It creates plenty of room for the club head to swing down and shallows me out. I think I've found the pieces that make my swing work and actually understand why I was swinging so well in the past.

Keep on working at it you can't go wrong with the great instruction you're getting. It sounds like you have a good understanding of what pieces you need to incorporate.
