Does anyone play an 11 wood?

Looking to fill the gap between my 5 iron (31 degrees) and my four hybrid (24 degrees)Saw an 11 wood for sale($20). Am I making the best choice and has anyone hit an 11 wood before. The 11 wood model is 2004 big bertha fairway wood.

It's my understanding that, at least in modern clubs, a 7 wood is supposed to be equivalent to a 3 iron, a 9 wood to a 4 iron and an 11 wood to a 5 iron. So distance wise it would probably be a decent fit.

That said, why not a 5 hybrid? Older models are plentiful and you could probably score one for $20.

A friend of mine plays an 11-wood, and he’s deadly with it. Plays a 13-wood, too.

That's all that matters. If you like the way something looks it's more likely you will hit it well.

Go for it! It’s basically equivalent to a modern larger sized 5 hybrid.

Personally, i would prefer a 28* adjustable-loft hybrid, to fill that gap that OP mentioned... (but it depends what suits the OP's eye, as others have mentioned?)

I don't have an 11-wood, but I do have a 24* 9w that I sometimes use. It's like a long range pitching wedge. The ball goes really high, and stops quickly, which is good as long as there's no wind. Distance wise, it's like a 4i, so I expect the 11-wood would be like a 5i, but in terms of flight, it's totally different.

What it's good for:

High shots that I need to stop quickly

Getting out of light to medium rough with distance

Hitting back on to the correct fairway over a stand of trees (found this out the hard way...)

Long shots from fairway bunkers. If the bunker isn't too deep, or the ball too close to the lip, the 9w (or 11w) can be a great club for fairway bunkers. Much easier than hitting a long iron out of one.

What it's not good for:

Windy days

How about thus set? 2-15 wood! They were owned by actor Mickey rooney. I purchased from one of his sons after his death.

I have a 28° War-Bird 11-wood (I also have 3+, 4, 7 and 9). I recently got a new to me set of irons I'm hoping I'll be able to use instead of all these fairway woods, but if they don't workout, I'll go back to the woods.

I have total confidence I’ll hit a green with an iron anywhere from 175 yards and in, but from 175 to 200 it’s hit or miss like most golfers, so I’m looking at higher lofted woods for those yardages as well.

I’ve got a set of Ping woods that measure 1+ 12*, 3-wood 15*, 4-wood 19*, 5-wood 22*, 6-wood 25*, 7-wood 29*. I took them out for the first time recently and the extra stiff shafts were just too much. I feel like these could be incredibly playable classic clubs with the right shafts so out came the Ping TTT xstiff shafts and in went some Harrison shafts tipped to a firm flex (low side of stiff).

I’ll see how these work but I don’t mind using whatever works best for my game, if it’s a high lofted wood so be it.

I like how each of the woods is stamped with "Professional".

No lofts indicated on the heads but google search says the 15 wood is likely around 37 degrees. Per Mickey’s son, Mickey was good friends with the owner of Austad’s who built/gave him this set plus putter.

Here's a link to an old post of mine that had the spec chart for Northwestern's 15 club all wood set. I believe Northwestern made Austad's model.

Thanks! The austad’s do look like northwestern quality (entry level unfortunately). I love that 1 pager post with the ginty lofts. I grew up playing a ginty 7 wood. Club was awesome.

One of the hustlers at my old man's course played that Northwestern 15 wood set. He could not hit an iron period. He was also allowed in most games to tee up anywhere. Had a woodworking craftsman make him some tees as high as 8 inches. Yep he could tee up in hazards etc. Putted with a Bobby Jones putter ( old hickory shafted one) and was lethal with that thing even if he was 25 yards off the green. For a long time I carried a Northwestern 6 wood that was money in the bank. Got some odd looks when some folks looked into my bag because I still carried and hit a 1 iron

I've had the same (Steelhead III) 11 wood in my bag for many years.

I wish I could have tracked how many greenie $$$ (165-195 yards) I've won over the years with that stick. I assure you it's in the thousands.

I hit and won two last week and one of the kids in the group said something like "yeah, but he used a wood to hit those".

I simply replied: "pay up".

I don't, but am strongly considering it. I play:

22 degree 7w that replaced my 2017 M2 3h and 4h (19 and 21 degrees respectively).25 degree 9w that replaced my 2017 M2 5i (21 degrees).I'm considering buying the 29 degree 11w to replace my 25 degree 6i. I hit my 6i decent, so it's not as much of a no-brainer as it was putting the 7 and 9 woods in the bag. Those two clubs have made a huge difference, dropping my index 2 or 3 strokes over the course of 2 weeks when I made the change.

I'm pretty sure I'll get a more consistent launch with the 11w, but I'm concerned I might lose some left/right accuracy.

I have a 25º 11-wood. I like it for all the reasons nocatchynickname enumerated. I also have a 21º 7-wood. I have never had much success with hybrids, and long irons are no longer part of my repertoire.

Don't you just love it when you pull off something like that? Right now I am a little odd on the top end but it works. I carry a little Adams 22* hybrid and a old Adams GT 5 wood @ 18*. Even though I can still hit them I do not carry the 3 and 4 irons. I still carry a 2 iron bent to 19* for special shots and not just out of trouble either. Do what ever works.

You might be best to post this query in the WTB section. I wouldn't classify these clubs as classics but modern clubs.

I don't have a problem with the OP since it is about a lofted wood and we are of the age where we might benefit from it.

Truth is most of us here at this point are probably past the ability to play persimmon drivers and forged blade 2 irons, but game improvement clubs from the 80s, 90s and even 2004 are fair game.

Kinda like oldies radio (since we are the last people that might still actually listen to radio), which is no longer Sinatra and "Steve and Eydie" but has morphed into classic hits from the 70s and 80s.

Just my take. We've always been of the mindset that all are welcome here. It's certainly not true elsewhere on this site. Write the wrong thing and you'll get an "OK Boomer" slur.

I find it especially irritating when millennials say that to me... since I missed out on Gen Y by a few years. They don't grasp that the Boomers were an actual generation... not just a term for old.

Well put there my friend. One thing I might add music wise it depends on where you grew up at. Us guys raised in the Carolinas tend to listen to beach music along with top 40 from the 60s and 70s. Our Northern retirees were never exposed to that growing up. But I gotta give them credit they have grasped on to the beach and shag music scene since they retired here. For me I am proudly set in my ways and consider being labeled "Old School" as a compliment. Yep I wear "Old School" like a badge of honor.

BTW some of us old farts can still hit a Persimmon driver fairly well but not like we used to. Good example---- My new home course the 10th hole it is a sorta short par 4 and is strictly position hole. If you can not carry a trap in the front of the fairway you have to bail out to the right. Back when I moved here 20 years ago I could fly that trap with a persimmon driver and cut it over a little for a flip 60* into the green. Now days I can not fly over that trap from the senior tees with a modern driver. Time marches on. I said something about that one day and the younger guys thought I was trying to shoot them a line of BS. The Pro/ Co owner who has been there forever told them yep I could.
