Ryder Cup and Daly

"Probably attitude."'

John Daly 2020

Here's why John Daly said he never made a Ryder Cup team

He is the only multiple major winner in the US or Europe since the founding of the competition to never play in the Ryder Cup.

Missing out in 1991 was probably due to the US PGA no longer giving an automatic spot to the PGA Champion. 1995 he could have qualified automatically, but missed the cut at the PGA.

Most inconsistent player maybe ever. Win a major, MC,MC,MC. He was good for maybe 1 or 2 strong weeks a

year.

You didn't watch the Being John Daly series?!

Yes he's extremely talented and I loved Crooked Stick at the time but since then it's clear he's not particularly likeable and has a massive sense of entitlement when it comes to golf.

questionable that strange was on the team, yes ... not so questionable that daly wasn't ... according to his wiki article, o'meara won twice in '95 ... late in the year, but before the end of the season ... not on the team ... scott hoch had also won that year, and probably had some very nice finishes outside of his win ... those were more deserving than strange, who went 0-3 ...

i knew o'meara was passed over for a rc captaincy, but had no idea he is not in the hof ... that's a good bit of pettiness on the part of somebody ...

Daly was very talented. His great short game and putting ability was often overshadowed by his spectacular long drives. In 1991 the Ryder Cup team was selected right after the PGA Championship. Didn’t have enough points and can’t blame Stockton for not choosing him as he was unheard of. 1995 he was a loose cannon in the throes of active alcoholism despite winning the British Open.

Daly has always acted entitled and selfish. Always seems to be the “victim.” The guy has never got to the root of his personal problems (himself). Never has been serious about his sobriety so he has never matured as a person. He’s actually lucky to be alive at this point but won’t be for long as he continues to live a very self destructive lifestyle.

Tough to pick Daly when he had the opportunity to easily play his way on but failed to do so.

Appearances trump logic and reason unfortunately. I think you are correct with both points you make regarding not qualifying and being entitled. But if you only see Daly eating at Hooters, smoking, dealing with an alcohol problem and playing golf shirtless or barefoot or both, you probably regard him as a redneck golfing Jesus.

I still have a degree of sympathy with the guy in terms of the problems he's had. With his game and image he should have been a marketing man's dream. Who's knows how these things could have panned out but surely even he thinks about what could have been. The talent is never in doubt.

Cabrera also lost in a playoff at Augusta in 2013. His overall performances in the majors, although it's littered with MCs, is still much superior to Daly's despite them both having two wins.

I don’t see how anyone views him as an “everyman”.

He has lost millions gambling, been given about a thousand “second chances” and continues to somehow live a life of luxury despite obvious debt and substance abuse issues. This is the record of an entitled elite, not a common man. The reason he never made a Ryder Cup is simple: he never qualified on points and picking him would be idiocy at a level never equaled.

Because there were plenty of other options that were better is my guess.

You'd have a hard time telling me Strange was a more deserving option than Big John. Pretty sure he made it do to being long time friends from VA with Lanny.

Say what you want about Daly, he pulled no punches and called it like it was about himself whether good or not. He was always good with the fans too.

Eh, John Daly always has a bit of a woo is me, I am so picked on attitude. Like all his plight was some how brought upon him by outside sources and not his own inability to be an adult.

I was a Big fan of his in the 90s. I followed him around the Reno Tahoe Open. You could see the immense amount of talent, and the complete lack of care. I was not as big of a fan after I followed him around for 4-5 holes.

he was very nice to the fans though that part is true.

It's very hard for me to think of anyone, in any sport, that got less out of his talent than JD. Based on potential, and his game, he had the ability to not only make a Cup team, but he should have won multiple Masters. He seems that his redneck, good old boy reputation has over taken his golf.

Bubba Watson didn't get a captain's pick in 2016 when he was ranked ~7th in the World Golf Rankings. There were rumors as to why.

Bubba is quirky, but not crazy quirky. Now look at John Daly (who I think is one of the most talented golfers of my generation). He is beyond quirky. And look at the PGA Tour back in the 1990s. It wasn't as buttoned up as the 1950s, but it was way more buttoned up than today. I may be wrong, but it's not hard to connect some dots to see why Long John Daly never made a Ryder Cup team.

He didn’t play well enough, plain and simple. He had ample opportunity. Qualifying is there for anyone and everyone. If your result are good enough you will make it. If you are relying on a Captains pick, then the only joke is on anyone expecting to be picked.

1991 - his PGA win came too late. He was always seen as a complete unknown prior to that win but, he played the full season on Tour prior to winning the PGA and it wasn’t particularly good - 11 missed cuts from 24 events. Speaking as a European, I would have loved a mad that wildly inconsistent to have been on that 1991 team.

1995 - The Open win aside, his season stunk! One other top 10 from 23 events with 7 missed cuts and one WD to add into the mix. Plus he was already exhibiting all the signs of being a complete rocket by that point having already been suspended for acting like a tool. Plus, play horses for courses here. Oak Hill was set up like a US Open in 1995. Who would you rather, Curtis Strange who could play that type of course or Daly with whom there would be a chance he would lose his head, walk off and find solace in the closest beverage that he could find.

JD is more similar to Patrick Reed. Both are good, major winners, but can also be viewed as disrepects to the game.

I think both St Andrews and Augusta would want to get rid of these guys from their lists of champions. JD always gets skipped over when they talk about winners at the home of golf and apparently there are whispers membership was rooting against Reed in 2018 behind closed doors.

I have read that Daly himself thought he was worthy of a pick in 1991 and 2004 but fair play to him he concedes he didn't merit a pick on other occasions.
