Trouble with Black Oxide Finish on Scotty Cameron Newport Two

I'm new to the refinishing game as a result of COVID boredom. I found some beat up Scotty Camerons for cheap online and wanted to give a black oxide finish a go on a carbon steel Scotty Cameron Pro PlatinumNewport Two. I followed all of the steps from a DIY article I found that used Perma Blue Liquid Gun Blue.

As you can see in the photos, it's not exactly taking in some areas and looks absolutely awful. I'm not sure if I should try and strip the black oxide at this point and try a regular polish finish, or if its worth salvaging.

Any advice on the best way to do either of these things would be greatly appreciated.

a) strip the black oxide effectively

b) get the black oxide to take

I've seen that sanding down the nickel more can allow the Perma blue to be more effective, but I don't want to sand the milling of the face either. So not sure how to go about that if that's the resolution.

It's a carbon steel putter head that is nickel plated. If you don't remove all of the nickel plating you will never get a good black oxide finish on it. It is near impossible to sand off the nickel plating by hand without destroying the head. It needs to be chemically stripped, electromagnetically stripped, or blasted with aluminum oxide or something similar.

Since about 2003 Cameron's main line of putters has always been stainless. But before that they were carbon steel. Either nickel plated (the Pro Platinum series) or some type of black oxide or oil can finish.

Send it to a shop that has experience in this.

Dunking that head in acid will result in an extremely toxic and caustic mixture that you shouldnt just be dumping in the drain or your yard.

Don’t do anything with it at this point other than get in touch with Doug and oughtonsgolf.com and send it in for him to strip.

Caswell's makes a nickel stripper that should work and is not very expensive. Or you can send it to a shop that specializes in removing nickel.

The black oxide can be removed pretty easily with something from the hardware store or sporting goods store for removing rust.

Anybody got any idea an how to remove Black Oxide from this putter? I’ve heard Coca Cola will do it but not sure if there is anything else I can use. Want to get it back to Stainless Steel

That’s not black oxide. You have to have it stripped professionally

You can if you invest in the appropriate equipment, and learn how to do it correctly and safely.

For $17 plus shipping Doug will strip it and send it back to you and you can do whatever you want with it.

Alternatively you can send it to one of the many refinishers out there and have it cleaned up and bead blasted or whatever else you want to do. My most recent putter was done by Liam of Embrace Putters and was extremely satisfied with the quality, turnaround, and most importantly the communication.

I’m in Australia so it will cost me a bit more to do. Otherwise just buy a Stainless Steel one online or something?

Probably more cost efficient to do that. I follow a person by the name of wans_customs on Instagram and it appears that he does great work. You may want to get in touch with him and see what the costs are and compare the options against buying a different putter vs customizing what you have currently.

It's not a black oxide finish. It's PVD. The best way to remove is to blast it off with some type of blasting media.

You can probably go to any machine shop or tire and wheel shop and ask them to bead blast it for you. I've done this multiple times. They've never charged me anything because it takes about 30 seconds. I just take them coffee as a thanks.

That could have been blasted clean in about 2 minutes.

I've refinished putters with both of the finishes listed above.  For the Pro Platinum, I used the Caswell stripper mentioned above.  If I remember correctly, it cost about $40 shipped.  It worked pretty well following the provided instructions.  I ended up using the plum brown finish as opposed to the gun blue.  It seems to last longer.  For the black PVD, I had trouble getting it off with the glass beads.  I ended up having to spray it with kid's play sand and respray with the glass beads to get the final finish.

Folks, come on!  It clearly say's pro platinum on the bottom which is nickel plating over carbon steel, the whole pro platinum series were like this.

You won't be able to do anything unless the plating is removed and it "won't" sand off.  It must be chemically stripped and can then be finished as black oxide or torched blue with some good prep.

You can't black Ox nickel plating. 

You cna remove the black Ox off of any putter with many products. I find the easiest way is to very quickly submerge it in your standard thick toilet bowl cleaner. Don't let it soak longer than a few seconds. It will come right off with a rinse.  Learned that from the Mann himself.
