Driver shaft length vs shaft weight

I apologize if this has been asked before but I have been pondering this.

Example, you get a new 45.5" driver with a 75 gram shaft. You want to cut it to 44". Now the shaft is shorter and a little lighter.

Would it be better to have a lighter shaft originally as you want a shorter shaft, in the hope of generating more clubhead speed.

What I'm trying to convey is, is a lighter shaft at a shorter length better for achieving more clubhead speed, and would adding the additional lead tape to bring the swingweight back up have any effect on the shaft flex.

Theoretically lighter shaft should produce more clubhead speed but some just prefer a heavier shaft. To help with their tempo or keep spin down, or they just like the feel, etc.

In terms of cutting down the shaft, the shorter it is the stiffer it will feel. However if you add weight this will make the shaft flex more. So it's hard to say in the end.

As noted in the answer above, I am one of those people who typically swings better and faster with a heavier shaft. For me, it helps me to feel where the head is.

There are multiple factors in play in your question. If the shaft weighs 75 grams to start and you cut an inch and a half off, you are only reducing it by 3-4 grams max. However, if you start with a 65 or 55 gram shaft, you are already 10-20 grams lighter and should see an increase in swing speed versus the heavier shaft. The lighter shaft may have a higher torque value (meaning it is more prone to twisting when the head makes contact with the ball), therefore, you may generate greater club head speed and ball speed wit the lighter shaft, but your dispersion pattern may increase.

A proper fitting is the right way to go.
