High launch, low spin iron heads... Yup, I'm going down that road.

So, first off, howdy y'all!

I hope everyone is healthy and safe.

I am a "short set" golfer looking for advice. I am looking for which launch but low spin irons to play .

I have heard that the hollow headed bunch (i500, Cobra King, P790, etc) would fit the bill.

I have always understood that a player should always choose equipment that forces you to flight the ball down (easier to hit it low than try an hit the ball high)....

Are there better options?

I am totally fine with going with a Maltby iron (I am not married to a brand), but would prefer the idea of a high (but lower) spinning iron head.

I have always played blades. MP29, TA3s, MB710, MB714, MP18.... but I think it is time to move on (AKA, I'm not that good lol)....

I want something that I can bend shots with, some forgiveness, but keep the ball running if possible....

Weird request, any ideas?

Driver swing speed at 105, definitely a sweeper/picker.

Any idea I can think of would not suit someone that’s not that good.

get the most forgiveness u can in my opinion. Your speed is not high enough to cause super high spin with the right shaft

You can bend/work any club. Comes down to what you like to look at, feel and desired ball flight?! Best to get fit for what you are wanting. Try the Mizuno shaft optimizer for shaft suggestions to start and go from there.

From a purely spec standpoint, you want the lowest CG you can find to help with that, possibly with the addition of stronger lofts depending on the flight and spin you're getting. The 2019 P790's are probably the best option as far as a player's iron goes, outside of that you are best served by the bigger game improvement style irons. Newer model Titleist AP1's might be a good option, but I think the ultimate version of this concept would be a combo set of Srixon U85/585. The U85 goes all the way down to a 6-iron and is one of the lowest CG options out there. So if you don't want to stray too far from your old blade look, the new P790 is the best bet, but if you're willing to go a bit crazy I think the Srixon combo set could be really cool.

P790s are the best of the group. Even with my 6i about 98mph on gcquad, I was still only spinning that club about 4200-4800. It usually turned out okay because with my speed I could get a ton of height on my shots, but I suspect a lot of ppl who can't quite get the height will struggle with the longer and mid irons.

I moved to 760s which spin a bit more.

I accidentally found this when I did my year long Eye2+ experiment several years ago. I was chasing a lower spin rate, due to spin too high with the Mizuno set I was playing at the time. I didn't FPA to the launch angle, though, and found myself hitting the ball even higher.

As a result, I gained distance, except for the PW, which apparently went TOO high. Which is a good part of why I quit playing them.

For what it's worth, in spite of going higher, I found I could ignore breezes I used to have to club up for, due to the lower spin. Point being, if you find the right your-swing/club spin and launch production, higher won't hurt you.

That is a good point regarding wind and spin. Most people focus on launch and trajectory more when in reality they should be focusing on spin. Obviously to a certain extent your launch is important, but higher launch/lower spin will always perform "better" than the inverse.

Thank you so much for the replies.

Some of these points and ideas are great (P790 and Srixon Combo sets, etc).

I moved to Florida a couple of years ago, coming from Las Vegas, so I have been forced to learn to play a breeze the same way I would play a 15 mph wind in the desert.

I have also learned that the ball doesn't leg out much here... hence my desire to move on from my current MB2s and find some that will provide forgiveness in this environment.

Thank you!!!!!

I'd say 790's can't be beat up to 7 iron, 8 - PW are like most others

I personally found the i500 to be super low spin but hated the feel

I've done post on hollow irons with this proviso .. they are not good on thin and toe misses (i500, t-mb and 790) ... for me anyways … YMMV

Agreed on spin. Sometimes lower isn’t better with irons. I’m close in speed 94-95 mph 7 iron and found that the T-MB’s and HMB’s, Cobra Forged TEC, were a better fit for trajectory, landing angle and spin, so I picked up a set of 716 T-MB’s 2-PW. If I were looking for just a low spin, one trick pony driving iron, the P790 would be it, super long, but not optimum for a set.

The TMB’s were at 66-6700 and HMB’s spun around 6500 Rpm with a 7 iron for me. My last set was Mizuno MP 67’s that spun around 6600 with the 6 iron which would be the same loft as the 7 iron HMB’s . The P790 7 iron was at 57-5800 rpm 7iron and the gapping from the 6 iron up was not optimum for me. If I was to purchase them, I would have lofts tweaked to get better separation between clubs.

Do yourself a favor and try some Ping G410 irons. I am a longtime blade player, too, but stumbled into a set of g410s earlier this year. They do everything you are looking for, feel great, and offer an extensive amount of forgiveness for those days when you arent good.

The other option, which are my current gamers, are the Srixon z785s. Not as forgiving or long as the pings, but loads of distance and unparalleled feel.
