Vijay - “Trash”

MattyO1984

Recommended Posts

Seeing online now that Vijay Singh is catching some heat from Brady Schnell (you’d be right to say who?) for taking a spot in an upcoming Korn Ferry Tour event. Amongst other things Brady (who is apparently 35 despite still using the word “turd”) called Vijay is “a true piece of trash”. Should make for some interesting correspondence coming soon for Brady.

Brady seems like a reasonable guy judging by his Twitter feed...

That being said I agree that Vijay probably shouldn't be playing, but I also subscribe to the "play well and your status will take care of itself" line of thinking.

If he’s “excepting” money then he’s turning it down, right?

I agree, don’t play if you aren’t taking the cash, lol.

Social media and career frustrations and stressful times are not a good combo. I’m not usually concerned about fields, and the rules are the rules, but VJ should have passed on this event IMO.

I’ll bet the angry words in haste will be regretted a bit, but that’s how it works these days - shout louder.

Vijay is awesome.

He had a Johnny Milleresque run of perfection...

This [twitter] guy can kick rocks...

I love watching Vijay swing....give him all the exemptions he wants [if I were ask]

Only reason he's playing is because its a home event for him. He plays both courses at Sawgrass daily and hasn't played any tour events in months.

I didn't see much outrage when Mike Weir played in the LECOM tournaments this year and last year on the KFT, or Cejka who played in Nassau in January. Both of these guys have earned over 20 million + in their careers.

I can understand Brady's viewpoint though, especially after not being able to play for almost 3 months if he plays the 1st alternate will feel like he's been kicked in the nuts

Yeah I saw this and couldn't help but laugh at a guy getting mad at another golfer for playing in an event he's eligible to play in. If you're mad at anyone, be mad at the Tour for allowing this to happen. His past success should be no factor in whether he should or shouldn't play to give "young guys" a chance. If you want a participation trophy go join your local youth (insert sport) program and play with local kids. His argument would be like being mad at Tiger/Phil for playing a Champions Tour event and taking away a spot from some older guy that didn't make as much money as they did.

Would love to see twitter keyboard warrior attempt to walk up to Vijay and “say it to his face”- might get a sample of old man strength, no deer antler spray required?

It's really none of Brady's business. If the Korn Ferry Tour and the Tournament hosts want Vijay to play and Vijay wants to play and it's legal then so be it.

There's no rule book anywhere that says a rich player can't take a spot from an up and comer.

If you're out there some day saying "I almost made it but Vijay took my spot in an event that I apparently wasn't good enough to almost qualify for" then maybe you just weren't good enough.

"To be clear, Singh has not actually confirmed he's playing in the event, but given his name is on that list and the fact the event is being held at TPC Sawgrass' Dye Valley Course in Singh's backyard, it's easy to connect the dots." - https://sports.yahoo.com/tour-pro-rips-vijay-singh-190521045.html.

If VJ is eligible to play then there is nothing wrong with that. It is his job at the end of the day.

I understand what Schnell is saying and he's not wrong for feeling that way. Despite the rule that makes it ok for Vijay to enter the event, the KFT exists really for a couple of reasons: for up and coming younger players to earn a Tour card, and for former Tour card holders that lost their status but still think they have the game to compete on Tour. Vijay is a 3 time major winner with a lifetime exemption on the PGA Tour and by extension a lifetime exemption on the Champions Tour. Not an all time great but a legend of the game for sure. Contrast that with the recent story of the KFT player (forgot the name) who took a job stocking shelves at Publix to feed his family while the Tour is on hiatus. So in Schnell's mind I think it's one of those situations where just because you can doesn't mean you should. His feelings are valid but popping off on twitter about it is stupid. This is a situation where maybe a private appeal might have gotten him the results he's looking for.

Vijay will sell more tickets. No way the KFT survives on its own without the Big Tour propping it up. His tweet is a classic example of why one should tweet and drink.

"Not an all time great but a legend of the game for sure."

I'm not meaning this to pick at you but more so the requirements for qualification, but isn't Vijay in the World Golf Hall of Fame? Meaning, what you say I agree with, I wouldn't put him in the echelon of "all time great" either, dang good for sure though and had an incredible, verging on dominant, couple of years on tour during his career.
