Vokey SM8s Wedges - Horrible Tin Metal Sound

Hey guys, I just recently received my 2 custom vokey wedges from wedgeworks and was so excited to play them (as I played several vokey wedges in the past and loved them).

My 2 SM8s are in the Brushed Steel Finish (just in case it makes a difference and I got the 60 in L (4 bounce) and 56 in M (8 bounce).Situation: Both my wedges sound like a very cheap Tin Metal sound at impact (it's almost disgusting to my ears, given im used to the feel/sound of my Mizuno MP-20 Blades). This happens no matter if its a totally flushed shot or not, same cheap metal tin sound. I am coming from the Cleveland RTX4 and these feel great and sound great at impact, no problem there.

Things I have done/thought about:

I brought 2 friends to hear me hitting them to see if they could hear anything funky with them. Almost instantly they both agreed its a very weird sound, like a Tin metal sound at impact. They also think its very odd, especially for a Vokey.I also thought about the finish, since I only have these 2 in the brushed metal finish, I have no way to compare to the chrome or black finish to see if it makes any difference.I also thought it could be the grind/bounce but dismissed as my 2 wedges have 2 different grinds/bounceI also searched the whole internet and youtube reviews for anyone else complaining about SM8s sound and couldn't find anything on it

That being said, I would like to know if anyone here has tried the SM8 Wedges outside and have experienced the same Tin Metal sound at impact. Needless to say, im devastated with this much anticipated purchase, which I cant return now since they are custom stamped and all of that. Appreciate your input.

I custom ordered 2 with stamping and have not received them yet. When I was at the store hitting them I thought they felt like regular vokeys, which to me is always one of the firmer feeling wedges. No weird tin metal sound at all. Never heard that before from a wedge.

Yeah I agree, that exactly what worries me, like maybe somehow there is something wrong with mine? could that even be possible?

My SM8s are black finish and don't sound tinny or anything. Just like other vokeys that I've played. They are really nice wedges, glad I got them. Why don't you contact Wedgeworks and talk to them about your concerns?

grab someone’s SM8 hit them side by side on video and send it to vokey on social media or email. Could get a response.

Check the shafts for issues. To me a vibration sound like that would come from there. I would think they may not be seated well in the head or have some type of defect. A solid metal head should not produce a tinny sound.

A way you can do this is tap the the grip side on the ground while holding the shaft lightly at the head side (you want to make the shaft vibrate). If you get the sound then the shaft is your issue.

Can anyone else who has the brushed steel finish comment on this? I’m about to order mine, but if this is an issue with that finish I will be sure to stay away

I have a gap wedge in an SM8 48* F grind in the brushed steel. My other two wedges are SM7’s and none of them sound tinny or anything other than a solid sound like every other Vokey I have hit over 20 years. I would reach out to them and let them know what you are experiencing. Chances are no matter what, they will make it right...

I tried a round with one back in October when they were in prototype stage and noticed nothing odd about them. In fact I thought they felt particularly soft for a Vokey wedge that I typically find a bit clanky. Sounds like you have a shaft not quite seated or a tip weight not quite flush. There was a guy at a local golf store to me on time complaining about his 785 making a bell like sound when he hit it sometimes. The employees thought he was nuts, me being nosy also wanted to see if this guy was psychotic. No word of a lie every few shots there was a metallic ping sound. The figured it was a loose tip weight and sent it in for repair.

So many thanks for this info. Pardon my ignorance, but what is a tip weight? (sorry, english is my second language). Im very curious, as that exactly what Im hearing on almost every shot.

It's a little weight that goes inside the tip of the shaft inside the hosel of the shaft. Clubmakers often use them to get the swing weight and head weight on spec. It is a little tungsten plug that weighs usually anywhere from 1g-10g.

Obviously you aren't "compressing" that ball, lol!

Totally kidding. I've had Vokeys forever and can't imagine the SM8s would be weird sounding compared to past models and until making the decision not to get them had read about everything out there - something is up and yes, I'd investigate the assembly.

I have SM7’s in that finish. It’s not the finish. Tinny is about the last word I’d use to describe them.
