Well I love her

And I love to fish

I spend all day out on this lake

And hell is all I catch

Today she met me at the door

Said I would have to choose

If I hit that fishin' hole today

She'd be packin' all her things

And she'd be gone by noon

Well I'm gonna miss her

When I get home

But right now I'm on this lake shore

And I'm sittin' in the sun

I'm sure it'll hit me

When I walk through that door tonight

Yeah I'm gonna miss her

Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite

Now there's a chance that if I hurry

I could beg her to stay

But that water's right

And the weather's perfect

No tellin' what I might catch today

So I'm gonna miss her

When I get home

But right now I'm on this lake shore

And I'm sittin' in the sun

I'm sure it'll hit me

When I walk through that door tonight

Yeah I'm gonna miss her

Oh, lookie there, another bite

I wish there was a supreme golf tribunal that could hear cases where a husband or wife complained about the other. The tribunal could hear all the facts and render a binding decision as to how much golf the spouse could play. Some spouses are way too restrictive as to how much golf the other can play, and some spouses spend way too much time playing golf and, as a result, neglect family obligations.

True story.

Many years ago my wife had a sudden illness requiring emergency surgery, she came within minutes of not surviving it. Scary stuff.

Afterwards they kept her in hospital what seemed like forever (really just a few days) and I sat with her each day. Along about the fourth day, I was sitting on the edge of her bed chatting and she noticed I was looking out the window. It was a gorgeous late-spring afternoon.

She said, "I know you want to be playing golf, you ought to go ahead and play, I'm doing fine". I'll have to admit I was thiiiiiis close to taking her up on it but I didn't. Probably because it was a Monday and the course was closed.

As a friend of mine once told me before I got married over 22 years ago, you start off with a full account of love, trust, and harmony with her. As the marriage progresses, you withdraw from that account. Sometimes small. Sometimes big. But you're always withdrawing. "So how can I replenish the account?", I asked. His answer, "You can't."

I got married anyway.

My wife has improved in this category A LOT over the years. It used to be a real problem. Now, not so much. It helped that she developed her own hobby...tennis. She also doesn’t work outside the home, so she plays tennis 5x per week or more. So the once or so a week I get to play golf with work and other obligations doesn’t seem so bad to her anymore I guess.

I disagree partially on the “bank account” analogy above. You do make small deposits in the account over time also. Things like going above and beyond with birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Or just buying her something for no reason every now and then. Or taking care of her “needs” if you know what I mean. I definitely make my deposits ? But I also withdraw some too...but I think my balance runs pretty positive most of the time.

Wait till you're retired, your wife will beg you to go play golf. She might even take up the game, but she will want to play golf with her friends, not you (most of the time). It's nothing personal, people just need their own space to enjoy their friends. Retired husbands & wives do not need to be together 24/7 (it's not healthy).

When my wife and I became exclusive and not seeing anyone else I told her we both needed to layout ground rules. She agreed.

Hers. She likes to travel, wanting to go somewhere relatively nice once each year. She is an only child and likes to read, she wants one day each weekend to be left alone most of the day to read or watch TV.

Mine. I play golf at least twice a week, sometimes four times a week. I average 3 times between April - November. This is not changing. Her only ask was that the weekend her sons stayed with their father that I not play both days, or I play one day on dawn patrol and get home before lunch.

We are still together, we travel and go camping together quite often (Before the pandemic) I have only played both days she didn't have her boys a few times (All club tournaments) She bought me a trip to Scotland in 2018 for SAT and SUN Open at Carnoustie, and four rounds playing. She walked two of my playing rounds with me. We turn off our phones on Masters Sunday every year. Having a wife that likes golf (she was planning on taking lessons this year, but again, the pandemic) is a big reason. If you really love golf and your S.O. does not and maybe even dislikes it, you will either not play much golf and resent them for that, get divorced(because you probably don't have enough in common, or you don't communicate well), or they will let you play while they cheat on you. I have coached two of my step kids teams, taken one to over 50% of his sporting events and the other to music practice each week too.

The amount of golf you play is different for each couple and family events can change this a bunch(kids and their after school and weekend events).

True story. My wife was in the hospital in pretty serious condition (sepsis). She's a transplant patient and things were not good at all. I get a call from my dad's cousin asking if I can play in a scramble the next day. no and hI tell him I'm at the hospital with my wife and she's in bad shape. His response is "I'm sorry to hear that. Can you play?" I said no hung up on him.

My wife is awesome about allowing me time to golf.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

I played anywhere from 4-6 rounds a week in my first marriage. If I wasn’t playing, I was hitting a couple hundred balls on the range. I neglected her big time because I just didn’t want to be home. I tried a bunch to get her to go just to ride with me in the cart, but she refused. She HATED golf.

my wife now went to the course with me twice while I played, then said she would like to play sometimes. That was right around 2 years ago, and I bet I’ve played 4-5 rounds without her since then. We play at least once, usually 2-3 times a week together. She is horrible, but getting better. It is the most I have ever enjoyed playing golf. On the odd occasion I play a round without her, it’s because she is working or doing something with her daughter, so I play with one of my old golf buddy’s. It’s always in the back of my mind that I wish she was out there with me though.

I used to want to get away from my ex, now I just want to spend all of my time with my current wife. Funny how things change when you find the right one.

After I had proposed to my wife, we discussed where we would like to go on the honeymoon. She mentioned that she had gone to Myrtle Beach as a teenager and had really enjoyed it. I said that's fine, but be aware that I will play golf if we go there. We planned on 7 days. I proposed 7 rounds of golf. She said 1. We ended up compromising on 3 rounds. Birdied the first hole of the first round there, so figured that was a good sign. Today is our 17th anniversary.

This was resolved in another thread where there was a discussion about strictly following the USGA rules. It was established by at least one member that if you did not strictly follow the rules then you should not call what you are doing playing golf. So .... just don't play with strict adherence to the rules of golf and when your wife ask if you are going to play golf, tell her no.... you are definitely not going out to play golf... you are going out to break a few rules.

Secret is you have to get your wife interested in playing golf. We just joined our first private club two years ago. She went from maybe playing golf 2-3 times a season to over 50 rounds last season.

Just this morning she ran in holding up her phone, and showed me the 35.3 number on her GHIN app. She was so excited because she was over a 40 handicap just a month or two ago.

My wife didnt like me playing at 10am and coming home at 3pm with the whole day blown out. Now I try to play near first light so I'm home by 9am after 9 holes or at least home by brunch on a full 18. I take the family out to lunch and enjoy the day and the wife doesnt have anything to complain about. I also started walking so I tell my wife I walk about 7+ miles per round for my health and back pain. As I started packing on some dough from the quarantine, she started telling me I need to get back out to walk and golf. Now she also loves to tell her girlfriends that I wake up at 5am to go golf so I can be back to take care of my family at a reasonable time.

Tough topic. Have a 1y old at home and my wife is staying at home with him. Playing 18 while she’s taking care of him is definitely not a recipe for a good week.

My wife "lets" me play as much as I want as long as the outside of the house is taken care of.

She's never complained about my golf habits.

As a wife I have a similar problem. The husband and I have only played 120 times this year because he insists that we take one day a week off. Apparently he sees some value to food in the fridge and getting the laundry done. I put up with it, but it’s clearly put a strain on the relationship.
