My JDM set up

Recommended Posts

A little about me: I got hooked on golf at the age of 26 when a friend told me I should give it a shot since I am a very competitive person. 31 years later and I am still trying to master the game. I currently play to a 4.2 HDCP and I have been as low as a 2.8. My skill set allows me to play any shot I would like and I consider myself to be a very good ballstriker with above average distance off the tee. My driver average last year was around 250 carry with a swing speed(last measured on trackman of 108). My typical shot shape is a tight draw but can play a fade when called for. I am a high ball hitter off the tee but can flight the ball as called for. Everyoine I play with tell me I would be a much better golfer if I played the same set of clubs for a year(I have 12 full sets in the man-cave) or if I played a cavity back iron(These people are no longer friends).

So I present my JDM bag as I am playing at the moment. I use a push cart but it is not as photogenic. The bad is a littge on the heavy side but as a whole, I love the look and features. Plenty of room fo what I would want with me during a round of golf.

Set up described under relative pics.

Iron set is Mizuno Pro Craft Made 911 3-SW. Very little to no info on this iron and all I have gleaned is that after the success of the TN87, Mizuno contracted with the finest craftsman to creat a "money is no object" best iron possibe. 2 sets resulted from this: Mizuno Pro Craft Made 893 (released March 1983) and the Mizuno Pro Craft Made 911 ( Released January 1991 ) The rumored cost for these Japan only irons was US $3500.00. They have a copper underlay, Satin finish and play off of a 37.5" 5 iron with a D1 SW. SW is 56* so I paired a MP series 52-07 gap wedge and a MP R Series 60-05 Lob wedge. grips are temporarily NB Tour Velvet style Midsize. Waiting for the right grip and will probably go with Golf Pride Tour Velvet cord.

Head covers are not that important and represent sentimental value. The driver cover I use is a Golden Doodle that looks exactly like my 15 year old dog. But for these pics, I used my Member-Member English Turn 3 wood cover for the driver and a custom cover for my 3 wood with the 'Nawlins saying " Let the good times roll" The putter cover is a Xenon black with magnetic closure that works well for the putter I use. The balls are hard to find Mizuno MP X.

Top of the bag:

Only the greatest driver Mizuno ever created(IMHO) I believe Vijay used a similar driver to win a major ( but couldn't tell you which :-). The Mizuno Pro 300S Strong forged Titanium 9* is a low spin bomber ( This driver was way ahead of it's time and if I remember correctly, and was one of the most expensive as well) . I re-shafted it with a Diamana iLima 60X and it delivers a mid flight that hits and runs forever. I have hit some of the longest drives with this club and it has been with me over 10 years (Trust me, that is a looong time for me and drivers).

The 3 wood is an Akira Prototype H114 14* paired with an ADDI 8X. Off the tee, this thing rivals most drivers and it is a dream off the deck. I have extreme confidence off the deck if a 235 yard carry is needed.

Putter is a Matsumoto 200 forged Mini Dale style with original Pro style grip. I play my putters between 33.25 and 34" and this one is 33.5"

The alignment sticks are driveway markers from Home Depot with checkered duct tape wrapped around them.

The irons are all serial matched and Beautiful. The feel is sublime and the responsiveness to shot command is scarily easy. The FM Brunswick 6.5 shafts give me a very consistent mid-high ball flight and distance control and dispersion are incredible.

I welcome any questions and would really love if someone could add some insight, data or history about the irons. I posted in the JDM form, on Mizuno club forum and Instagram and I have yet to see any info other than the speculative data I have provided.

Happy Mother's day to all and thanks for taking a gander at my post!

Man what a great bag--- Love the fact you play a 10 year old driver sorta like the affair I have with my Homna G1-X which is going on 5 years old now. FWIW you are about 2 clubs stronger than I am on the irons and you know what that means--- If you ever get to the beach and we play you gotta spot me at least one set of tees!!!

Big Stu, thanks for the kind words and I’ll gladly spot you as long as you are healthy. I hope things are getting better and you are back in the swing quickly.

As for the driver, when I got fitted for the current M5, the results were so incredible that I sold all my other drivers( and there were many) with 2 exceptions. The Mizuno in this bag and a Cleveland classic 7.5 I shafted with a HZRDUS Smoke shaft.

DAF6N29E3Q6Y.jpgThese dang Mizuno are a mystery. No one seems to have any information about them....not even Mizuno.

@justasgood, @BIG STU I couldn't help but chime in...I just had to replace my Taylormade r7 Superquad TP driver last summer, a driver over 10 years old. Thing went miles...
But as they say (whoever "they" are) all good things must come to an end...
I ended up replacing it with a G400 LST which I love but don't get it twisted, if I were to stumble across another one of these bad boys on the 'Bay or another secondary site I would rekindle like an old flame.
I LOVE that Cleveland Classic too, always wanted one...hang on to that one.
Thanks for sharing, play well!!

Actually we have a contingent of retirees over at a neighboring course that still play those Quad drivers along with Ping Eye 2s----- That bunch shoots around their age all the time from the super Senior tees. Mot of them are in their late 70s early 80s

LOL I play with those guys from time to time and they make me play the middle tees. After I turned 60 I told them that was out I play the gold senior tees. Those guys are tough to beat day in day out. LOL again those guys killed the traveling golf leagues on this end of the beach. They kicked butt and took names. One of the leaders Earl the Pearl started razzing them the other week telling them I was over 60 and retired and would be on their team. One of the guys at my course asked if I was playing league and I told him no. He said they wanted to kick those guys butts. I told him well I can not kick them alone. Called Earl and told him and he got a good laugh
