Drills to move Low Point forward

Recommended Posts

Looking for any advice/drills that could help move my low point forward?? I’ve always had an issue hitting the ball fat but just thought it was a small issue.

Hit some balls today and put a thin towel down a little behind the ball. It was a sobering experience, even my “good shots” were contacting a significant chuck of the towel.

Appreciate any advice!

You have to address the physical errors that are causing the low point problem.

If all you do is move the low point forward, you’re likely to hit I worse.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

What Monte says is very true. That being said, because you asked, I’d recommend reading “The Impact Zone” by Bobby Clampett. You’ll definitely find drills there.

Put a towel behind the ball and hit balls. Miss the towel... you need to get on your left side before impact. Why you don't do that now could be for several reasons.

The towel drill is great, stick with it. Start with the towel further back and slowly move it closer to the ball. Also be mindful about how close you think it should be. If you look at the striker 3000, same concept as the towel drill, the pro setting has the “towel” a good 3-4” behind the ball.

couple checkpoints, address the ball with shoulders, hips, feet all aligned to target. Don’t address the ball with the club on the ground. This can create an address position where you’ve made the low point behind the ball. Something that I fight is when addressing the ball, I look at my club head too much before takeaway and sometimes watch it back for the first 18” or so. When I do that I’m moving my awareness of the ball and it causes very inconsistent impact locations. I’ve been working hard to develop a cadence that is the exact same every shot where the last bit before pulling the trigger I have the ball in focus, the club forgotten and not looked at, and my brain clear of anything. For me I used to feel like my thoughts were more of a problem for quality of strike than my physical ability to return the club head properly on plane.

Great point about watching the clubhead going back in the beginning of the back swing. I did this all the time until our Superintendent--who is a very good player--pointed it out to me. He said, "Why in the world would you ever take your eye off the ball?" HA Good question when you think about it, in addition to it causing you to unintentionally sway your head off the ball.

Use some foot spray and paint a line on the range perpendicular to the target line. Set up to the line and do practice swings concentrating on moving the your divot toward the target. Then repeat with hitting balls placed atop the line.

The towel drill is also good, so keep it up.

Drills like these are a great way to self organize.

Stick a penny on the ground (or a tee, as long as you push it down flush against the turf) 2-4 inches ahead of the ball straight down the target line. Address the ball like normal, but instead of looking focusing on the ball, focus on the penny/tee and try to hit it instead.
