Anybody have a music system at home

I spent about half that10 years ago on Yamaha receiver, sub, Bose 301 and Bose center speaker, still going strong and as much as I need, very clean to me.

I know you are talking next level, but can still do something solid for reasonable.

Depends on who you are. Do you drive the Maserati on the city streets at 25 mph just to hear the engine purr? Do you make your friends try fine wine and then have to explain to them why it tastes and smells like it does believing they could give a rip? Do you want to have people over so you can explain the incredible range of a pair of speakers for $15K that expand the tones about .01% of the Bose 301 or the Klipsch Chorus II? Or do you want to sit alone, on your white couch farting and smelling them yourself, contemplating there is nothing is better than smelling my own farts listening to $15K speakers? If you say yes to any of these... I say "Yes, they are worth it."

[Edit} sarcasm doesn't do well in writing. I have a system I bought in 1995 for $5,000 and it has been great for me. Of course, it is a huge PITA to disassemble. It is currently in the closet under sheets, a Carver Tube amp, a splitter for the speakers, the CD player and the receiver. I have the Klipsh Chorus IIs which are 3.5' tall and huge and just not worth the space for them. They do sound good, but if I were to do it all over again... no. There is truth that digital v analog makes a difference, so to spend so much on a lower level recording is meaningless IMO.

The Bose 301 was the first decent set of speakers I owned. In those days I was using a Dynaco tube amp and an AR turntable. Like a fool, I literally gave away my turntable and record collection (lots of Duesche Grammaphone and other such labels) in the mid 1990's, thinking that CD's would be the end-all, be-all.

I'm not the music head I once was, with marriage and old age, and now I'm digital with a Sony STR-DH790 receiver, older JVC XL-XV22 CD player, Sony SA-WM20 active sub and older Advent speakers. My advice is that, unless you have an ultra-critical ear, you needn't spend 5k for a pretty decent system. If you Bluetooth your music source, a high end system would probably exceed the frequency range of the Bluetooth source, anyway.

My system has the following

B&W 805D latest in white on stands

Musical Fidelity Pre/Power monoblocks

Meridian Dac / transport

currently deciding what turntable to buy as my Pro-ject is goosed

however, I’ll never spend a lot on interconnects as I believe these are a complete waste of money over a couple hundred dollars

but that’s just me

the above is so accurate and the soundstage is awesome. The only issue is if the recordings are shit, like oasis recordings are, then this system rips it and says sod that. So if you have great recordings then by god it’s impressive

especially with the carpenters and all the other artists in the other thread esp rem, haunting voices

however apart from the speakers, I still have dynaudio contour speakers upstairs, everything was bought in the 90’s early 2000’s

to replace the amps, class a would cost an arm and a leg now, same with the CD player

If you're not worried about annoying the neighbors, break your new turntable in with this . . .

Save your dough... look at Yamaha components and Paradigm speakers (Canadian)... and compound your interest on the savings. Now THAT sounds sweet to me.

I love music and certainly considered purchasing a kick@$$ set up......but at the end of the day (some might call me crazy), I figured I'd get just as much enjoyment from Sonos wifi speakers, strategically placed throughout the house....and would save the other untold thousands of dollars on golf, family trips, bourbon, etc. All told, I think it was the right decision. Sonos speakers are great and get the job done; and they are wifi, so there is no hassle of cables......If i'm doing work in the garage or in the attic and want to listen to music, no problem, i just grab one of the speakers and take it with me. To each his own, but I just can't justify the 0.1% gain in audio quality for 10 times the cost. Here's an interesting article: Kirkville - How the Audio Industry is Deceiving Consumers with High-Resolution AudioI'll stand by for the tomatoes to be thrown at me now.

PVW-I'm with you-I still have a radio shack stereo system I bought in 1969. It was a step up from the all in one record player that you could carry like a small suit case. Still have 300-400 LPs I periodically play.

What will really drive the audiophiles nuts is that I just bought an Integer blue tooth 20 watt sound stick, for $100, which I use in the car, in the bath or anywhere , paired with the iPhone and the Apple music subscription. To me it sounds great.

My hearing is so screwed from playing in a band, going to metal concerts with my son (Of course without protection) and aging, that if it sounds good to me, its good enough.

"Integer blue tooth 20 watt sound stick"

I'm sorry, you bought a what? Google's yielding nothing for me on this. And no, I'm not an audiophile going nuts. Just curious what this is.

Pretty much not a serious thread and, lol, don't post unless you've spent $5,000.

But for those who are answering and do care about their sound systems, no matter how expensive (all personal preference). My fairly humble setup:

Vintage, fully restored Pioneer SX-850 receiver.

Rega Planar 2 turntable, Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge.

Wharfedale Linton Heritage speakers.

Nowhere near $5000 but touches all the bases for me and my wide variety of listening tastes -- 60s/70s rock, jazz and jazz vocals, classical, anything cool and Christmas.

Picked up the Wharfedales in December to replace my 37 year old Polk Audios. They have been an absolute revelation and very versatile.

Just started rebuilding from scratch a system a couple years ago from the one I put together in 1983, which was pretty darn good at the time for the money I had to put into it, so I hang onto stuff for awhile.

This system is my last, although I'm sure I'll experiment with a different cartridge down the road.

I just bought the

marantz tt15s1 turntable, got 20% off the price. Never pay full price for anything. If you don’t ask you never get. Have to wait a few weeks for delivery.

Also updated the pre-amp to Musical Fidelity M6S pre, again got 25% off retail

Got a used Sonus ZP90 music streamer for $150

Again first things bought really, apart from speakers for 25years
