My anti-shank chipping method

In the months leading up to the lockdown I'd been beginning to suffer from the umentionables when chipping, so I thought I'd use all that extra time to get it sorted. So I started going to the local park and trying out all the cures which the well-informed contributors to this Forum were suggesting. Unfortunately none of them worked and some even made it worse - you may think it's impossible to shank a chip left hand low for instance but believe me I've managed it.

So beginning to panic with the reopening of golfcourses imminent I went down to the park for one last session. On my way I suddently remembered an anti yips putting technique first popularised back in the 70's - the " after forty finger ". Basically you simply extend the rightforefinger vertically down behind the shaft - not rocket science but who cares ! Anyway, in the park it's as if all my cares were gone - the ball was coming off perfectly every time with only one tiny mishit...fast forward to my first 9 holes for 6 weeks yesterday - a whole series of beautifully struck chips, two with such perfect contact I got much more spin than expected and wound up short. The last 2 holes I began to have such confidence in the method I even used it for 2 pitches of 30 yards - same lovely results !

And all this while my little inner voice was screaming in my ear " shank shank " ! Maybe it will all go away next time out....keep you posted.

One way to combat the shanks is to try to hit one. It is not that easy to do it on purpose. Shank shank shank shank shakity shank shank...

I used to shank chips by sucking the club inside on the take away, on a short chip or pitch you don't have time to compensate for that. Finger down the shaft makes flipping it inside harder to do.

If your hands are high at address and you drop them down at impact you will tend to hit the ball on the heel which can lead to shanking a few. On the other hand if you setup with your hands low and raise them up at impact you will tend to hit the ball on the toe... This is generally true in my experience and also I have heard similar thoughts by more expert folks elsewhere.
