Maxfli revolution black dot

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help I brought a set of maxfli revolution black dot, and from what I can find out is that they are cast but not sure if they were nickel cast or steel cast. Here’s the big question after they are cast are they nickel dipped then chromed or are they just chromed on top if they were casted in nickel already. I’m asking as I was thinking of restoring them. Any insight would be great.

The head is cast stainless steel/nickel alloy, with chrome plating on top of that. In terms of the chrome, typically there are a couple of layers where the first is nickel and then chrome on top of that. I don't know the exact process used on these heads but if forced to guess I'd say there is a very good chance they are plated nickel layer on top of the cast head and then the last layer is the bright chrome.

Yes that’s the thing, I thought they would have been steel cast, then nickel and chrome plated over the top much like forged. It would be strange having them made just of nickel then a further coating of nickel then the chrome.

Really?? I have a set myself and I thought the heads were made of just nickel with chrome plating.

I know what your saying mate, I have looked all over Google it’s seem there is no definitive answer, I know they are cast but cast what?, steel, nickel or a mix of steel and nickel, but surely if they were just cast nickel then it would be just chrome on top. God knows, looks like I will never truly know.

I don't know what the exact composition of the base material is but it's not pure nickel. Some sort of nickel alloy with ?? % of actual nickel. And given that the base material is an alloy it's likely that there was a pure nickel plated layer on top of the base material before the chrome was added as the top layer.

And for curiosity sake why does is matter whether or not there is a nickel plated layer?

Weren’t these designed by Ralph Maltby? If so, he could probably shed some light?

Yes your wright, it does not really matter, it’s just I have a company that does club restoration, and have done a set of forged irons for me, but these are cast so I wanted to know if it would be the same process, and I’m curious to know what material the heads are made off in the first place.

Yes they were made by Ralph Maltby. That’s a goad Avenue to go down, I must admit since I found a company in the uk which is where I’m from that restores irons I thought I would get some done, perhaps keep a few sets for myself and flip some. As I know there is a market for people who prefer older forged iron like titleist 690mb 680 and even some mp33’s and so on.

I am nearly 100% positive they were not made by Maltby. He was asked about the last iteration of Australian Blades, which were produced by the same process and at the same time as the Revolutions, his response was that he was not involved at all.

The set Ralph Maltby designed for Maxfli were the MCT-97 Australian Blades.

Yes that’s wright Ralph Maltby did make the Australian blades, but I thought they were made out of the same materials as the revolution black dots.

tad moore made some of the dunlop maxfli heads as well, but well before the maxfli revolution era (1999'ish).

I didn't know ralph maltby was involved.

anyone in this thread know if these can be bent fairly easily? assume if they are nickel cast it shouldn't be a problem...
