Byron Morgan DH89 order questions

Recommended Posts

Hello, Thinking of a possible Byron Morgan DH89 order, few questions:

1). Does BM offer other shafts? Like the LA Golf, or new Fujikura shaft? Same with grips

2) GSS vs SS , any insights? GSS seems 2x SS in cost.

3). Can BM mill the face in a uniform milling pattern? Not like some of the ones I see (BM) with a bigger mill marker every centimeter or so?

4). Can BM weld the neck to the putter body?

5). Can BM cut a sound slot ?

6). Glass Blast vs Tour Satin, note sure what those finishes are.

7). Paint fill colors, assuming they can use whatever color you'd like?

8). Top line, looks like the DH89s have pretty thick top lines, can BM bevel the edges or do something to thin out the top line?

Maybe a BM or a Goodwood, would like a 009 but don't have time to navigate SC games.

Appreciate any insights, I know I am picky

Straight from the horse's mouth would be the final word. [email protected]. He's always responded to me fairly quickly. Nice guy, straight to the point.

1) I know he offers stepped and stepless. He would have to speak to anything beyond that.

2) This debate will go on and on. For me personally, I could never tell the difference. Others results may vary.

3) Yes he can. The face milling I believe you're referring to is his "Tuna #4" mill. It's the stock option on his DH89 and 612's right now I think. He offers a variety of hand milled options. Some aren't as precise (for lack of a better word) looking as a CNC milled face but that's just my eyes. If you dig through google image or the Byron Library thread here I'm sure you can find most of them.

4) Yes he can. Lots of options.

5) Yes sir.

6) I asked him about this at one point and he said they're the same thing. He may have switched brands of the glass beads he used, which might explain any slight differences in the look, but that's just me guessing. If you have a specific look you're trying to achieve, it's probably best to expalin to him what you're after.

7) Yup

8) Yes he could bevel the top line's edges more, or round the entire top line. I know some people say that makes it look thinner, but I've had both and they look equally as thick. Again, best to explain to him exactly what you're after as he would have a better idea of what's possible.

Hope that helps a bit. I remember having a bunch of questions about an order years ago, sent him an email and he just called me directly to discuss it. Super nice guy. For as short and straight to the point he is with email or text, he was super chatty on the phone. Sounds just like you'd expect an old sufer dude to sound like haha.

What a great answer, why didn't I think of that! I mean if you're going to spend that on a putter shouldn't you be asking them a hundred questions?

Man. I so badly want to see dbdors original post response. I would, however, think Question 2 about the GSS v SS would elicit more discussion. I personally would like other opinions on that topic with respect to Byron pieces. I suppose, however, Scotty1140 kind of summed it up...it’s a never ending cycle of unknown.

It was a simple "Why not call Byron Morgan". If you look at Scotty1140 response, the first point was "get if from the horses mouth". Scotty also had a lot of response to the questions, but it sounded like they got all of those answers by what?, "contacting Byron Morgan". I know before I placed an order of that magnitude it's what I would do.

Why? GSS is just a marketing gimmick.

Probably so, but, man, does GSS normally cost more from boutique and custom putter makers. Don’t different types of 303 SS have different percentages of carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, chromium, and nickel? I also read somewhere that higher amounts of chromium and nickel produce a more rewarding feel in 303 SS putters. I think the spec ranges for chromium and nickel are higher in 304 SS, so maybe buying a 304 SS putter would provide a more tangible difference than 303 SS v 303 GSS. Or, more likely, no one will ever really notice a significant difference between any steel types when hitting a golf ball to make it roll across a green. Who knows?

I've worked as a industrial mechanic including fields of electronics, electric, and mechanical maintenance of robotic manufacturing equipment. I was a process engineer. SS should be graded by the number. 303 SS should all be the same regardless of the country of origin. If you get a different mixture the number should change. One example is a SS Rolex. They use 904L Stainless steel which is 25% nickel. I've asked putter manufacturers what's the difference between 303 SS and 303 GSS and have been told just the price. MHO

When I was ordering my first DH89, I was contemplating GSS... So I asked Byron, when I was at the shop.

"Honestly... What is the real difference between Stainless and German Stainless?"

His answer...

"One of them is from Germany."

I ordered the regular stainless. ?

Thank you sir for the clarification. When I ordered my Lajosi he had a German stainless option, which was a $500 up charge. I asked him where his regular stainless came from. He replied “my regular stainless is from Italy and it’s very nice.” I ordered the regular and it is very nice.

With the price difference in GSS and SS since both are 303SS. If I was going to drop 1k I'd be buying 2 putters made from SS because there is no reason to spend $500+ on an extra letter.
