Alison Lee - no longer with PXG

Recommended Posts

Noticed in her IG story today that her bag looked a little different from what you can see:

07a40159-5488-4528-93cc-cfa5c5d51746.pngLooks like she’s no longer on PXG website either. Not surprised honestly - her results have not been great recently

A lot of LPGA players have PXG clubs in the bag, even though they aren't technically PXG Pros. Nelly Korda has three wins on tour using PXG irons and wedges. The latest win was late last fall. Gaby Lopez won earlier this year with PXG irons and wedges.

C'mon Argonne69, you know PXG haters don't want to hear this. According to them its always the PXG clubs that hold them back.

Truth is any PGA or LPGA pro can play and win with ANY set of irons, they are just that good!!!!

Seems to me that Lydia Ko was the big investment on the LPGA side and her fall from the top is really the story when it comes to summing up the stagnation with PXG who look a lot like Nike did back in the late 2000s. None of the other names PXG signed were at the top of the tour. Much like Nike opted to do, PXG spent the bulk of their budget on landing and marketing their association with the big fish. The "other" names were not nearly as impressive as the world #1: Alison Lee, Ryan O'Tool, Anna Nordqvist, Christie Kerr, etc. All of us know the LPGA and those are fringe players. Anna is pretty consistent. Kerr had her moment but she's older now and certainly fading.

I compare PXG to Nike because Nike went with a similar approach. They landed Tiger and later Rory during his ascension after Tiger had become less dominant. They were the studs with a bunch of other lesser players behind them occasionally popping up to win something and get your attention for a week or two: David Duval, Anthony Kim, Lucas Glover, Michelle Wie, Paul Casey, Francisco Molinari, etc. Aside from Duval who managed to ascend into relevancy for awhile and even grab the #1 spot, the rest are B players at best. You have major winners in that group but somehow they're still some of the most underwhelming winners you can think of.

But Nike ultimately died out which should be concerning. They ultimately decided to bail on the entire equipment thing altogether. None of the other names really did anything to help carry the brand from an equipment perspective. I see PXG falling into a similar situation right now. It's up to them to get out of that rut.. They're hip and cool now as the new kid on the block but their throwing gas on the fire with their advertisements. At some point they have to build a legitimate reputation within the industry and start selling a heck of a lot more clubs to really stick. So far PXG is still a fringe brand that for many average players can be hard to even find. Whereas a few Asian brands can market on the basis of being an expensive, elite brand, I'm just not so sure that formula will work for PXG here in the states. They'll have to find something on which to base their business.

I laugh when people suggest that it's not about making money, too. What the heck world are you living in where you start a business NOT to make money. Trust me, that'll get old REAL FAST.

Parsons has said numerous times he isn’t going to pay a lot for sponsored athletes which is why you see lots of turnover.

Other than the pxg hate on golf forums and social media from mostly people that are upset at the price or don’t like parson’s attitude where are you getting your information that they don’t have a legitimate reputation? They have pros playing their gear not under contract, they have college programs using their gear.

They aren’t really trying to be a mainstream brand but that high end niche market and in case you haven’t been paying attention other brands have noticed their success in the high end market and want a piece of that. Callaway has the epic irons and tm has the p790 ti plus titleist went ahead and have done multiple iterations of concept irons that were made in a limited number and sold out.

People expect PXG to be world beaters because they are expensive but for some they won’t be any better than something else on the market but if you do enough searching on here you will find feedback from members that they outperformed other brands in a fitting

Alison may have struggled with her game over the past few years, but she's still great with the fans.

Except the "biggest" (in terms of following) is Paige and she no longer is with PXG. Their strategy appears to be targeting IG Influencers that have smaller followings, but are most likely more affordable. Whether it is the "correct" strategy, only time will tell, but II suspect that if Nike could not pull it off with Tiger and Rory (as far as he hard equipment goes), I'm not so sure that PXG can do it either - but who knows.

Parsons is smart and that is why he isnt paying anyone Tiger or Rory money. He has the funds to make it last as long as he wants. His demographic are older (usually bald fat guys)guys with cash and the same ones who buys Harleys from him(non profit all proceeds to wounded warrior I believe) and high end furniture.

PXG has been very popular at the club I play out of. The older guys absolutely love them and did pretty much full bags, the only clubs they usually dont have are the drivers. Ive also played with a few guys my age 20-30 who are playing PXG in the irons, those are guys who are chasing distance in a smaller looking head. One of my friends fits in that demographic he is an ex-national team rugby player and working in finance now, he absolutely bombs the ball but chases distance everywhere.

Nike's problem was requiring head-to-toe deals with anyone they signed.  At different times, they had great irons, poor wedges, or a poor ball, then great woods, and poor irons.... but you had to play it all or you couldn't sign with them.  Look at how many guys are wearing their apparel now that you don't need to play the equipment.

They didn't have cachet yet to require all their equipment for players.  I've always said, ESPN's belief is not that they cover big events, but that events are big because they are covering them.  Nike's attitude towards golf was the same way, but they had no track record to back it up, and there were some failures along the way.  I believe they are still players in the game had they been more flexible early on.
