Vokey High vs Low Bounce in 58-60 deg lob wedge

Recommended Posts

Which do you prefer and how do you choose which to get? I have played Vokey SM7 with K grind 14 deg bounce and then switched to a D grind 12 deg bounce. About to order SM8 but have been debating on whether or not I should try a lower bounce lob wedge. Options are a 58-low bounce K grind (6 deg bounce) or a 58-S grind (10 deg bounce). I mostly use a lob wedge out of the bunker, for 3/4 shots, pitching, and chipping when I'm short sided. Club face is pretty much square for all shots I rarely find myself needing to open it up. I think the D grind is ok I just don't see the need since I'm mostly hitting square shots. My 50 and 54 deg will both be F grinds with 12 and 14 deg bounce so that has me leaning toward wanting something with a lower bounce. Might just be trying to talk myself out of getting something other than the S grind which I think would work well but the new low bounce K grind is tempting since the sole is really forgiving.

I play a 58 D grind, it is miles better for me than lower bounce options. Wedge fitting is totally personal, but for me, lower bounce wedges create higher face contact, higher launch and knuckleballs. The higher bounce I contact lower on the face, which launches lower and spins more.

Sometimes sometimes I carry an M grind 60 if I’m playing a rock hard track and just can’t physically get by with my 58 D opening the blade at all

Unless you're on really tight bermuda or very firm sand, I always prefer and think that medium to higher bounces are better. For lies that are not the former... 10-12* is perfect. I play 10* in my 58 and I get tons of spin and I can nip the ball off the fairway no problem. Getting into that 6-8* territory gets a little sketchy for me.. I've used 6* and you get contact higher up on the face because the club slides under the ball a bit more, which launches the ball a little higher and with less spin. Might work well off really firm turf but I'm up in the northeast, it's generally not ever too firm.

So for Vokey, I'd def stay with that D grind unless you play a lot of really open faced shots, then maybe M grind. Alternately, get the 60D and bend it strong to 58* just to take a touch of that bounce off if you are wanting more "options". I have 50/12, 54/12 and 58/10 and have no problems.

To be honest and give a general answer, you have to just try them all. We can all make recommendations based on what type of turf conditions you play on, but it all comes down to feel. I have the 60.04 L Grind and live in Northern California where we are lush and soft with heavy sand. All my turf conditions would point me towards a high bounce wedge, but I absolutely love the feel of the ball coming off "dead" on my Lob Wedge. I have 10 degrees on my 54, because I like the feel of the ball coming off hot for that particular wedge, but I hate the feeling of the club bouncing with lob wedges around the green or inside 70 yards. I also have a TM Hi Toe 64 that I hand ground the 12* bounce down to about 7*.

Turf conditions are a very important factor, but in the end it all comes down to what you like to feel and the shots you are trying to play. Have to spend some time tinkering!

My favorite wedge ever was a Mizuno MP T-11 that had a M-grind shape and 10 degrees of bounce. I guess you could buy a 56M and bend it, but I'd love it if the M and D grind just combined into one option with 10 degrees of bounce. Not a huge fan of the S-grind in lob wedges.

I'm in the same boat with you - I've played a 60* wedge with 4* of bounce for almost twenty years despite living in Ohio and playing on courses with predominantly soft conditions.

62° m grind for me loving the shape so far. But I mostly play low, spinning pitches with this club as opposed to flop style shots. I play it with alot of handle lean so I'm not using the bounce anyways.
