Lady MacGregors

I've been looking for a set of clubs to try to entice my wife to join me on the course and a classy looking vintage set is what I think is my best chance. I just found these locally and I'm amazed at the condition. They seem to be unhit - the 5 iron still has the "Inspected By" sticker on it. Does anyone know anything about them (year, etc) The irons look similar to the Crenshaw Texan model.

They certainly are in amazing condition. The grips look better than new even and those white ferrules are sweet. I'd pick them up just for those reasons alone. Nice score!

Now if you really do want her to golf more with you I question the logic of getting her narrow-soled blades and small wood woods. There are much more forgiving starter sets out there than these. That being said, if she's been showing interest in going out with you but you'd rather she didn't then this set may be just the deterrent she needs! ?

I did consider that, but I believe she'll be more likely to take up the game with beauties like these. Plus, a lot of us learned on clubs from this era and we're still playing! (Some of us have even gone in the other, less forgiving, direction)

They are in the "retail" section (and as I always like to say that isn't meant to be a putdown at all, as they look like fine clubs) of my 1983 MacGregor catalog. The men's version was called the "Great Scot," although I do agree that they resemble the Crenshaw irons mentioned above. I believe that by 1983 Crenshaw had moved on to Walter Hagen/Wilson.

Not a bit surprised those Tacki-Mac grips are still good. It's a remarkable material that I especially like for putters. It is amazing how well some very old versions of them clean up with just a little soap, water and an old toothbrush.
