Need some help with Spin Rate

Recommended Posts

So I just came back from a session at the PGA Superstore b/c I recently purchased some new irons and wanted to get the yardages down. Was happy with dispersion and overall yardages from the irons. However, my numbers with the driver were a bit disappointing. Here are the numbers ... I've included my numbers for the irons for comparison purposes:

Ping G 30 LST (stock TFC 419 stiff)

250 carry / 256 total / 149 ball speed / 13.5-14.2 launch / 3661 spin.

Mizuno MP 69 (Project X 6.0)

7 iron 176.6 carry / 180 total / 116 ball speed / 18.4 launch / 4683 spin

PW 141.4 carry / 143.4 total / 99 ball speed / 23.7 launch / 5427 spin

I'm not overly concerned with the total distance with the driver but feel as if I need to get the spin rate down. Any thoughts (besides getting fitted) on what I can do to get the spin rate down? Besides changing shafts, are there any drivers that are favorable with getting a lower spin rate around 2500?

Thanks in advance. DK

The first question is what launch monitor was giving you the spin numbers?

3600+ is indeed high. Assuming you are making contact above the horizontal center line, i.e. upper half of the face, your first option is to play a lower loft.

Something seems off with those numbers. You're a really low iron spin player, but a really high driver spin player? If it's trackman, be careful. It doesn't always catch the spin, then it tries to guess. Some other launch monitors don't even measure spin... it's all just "calculated" (guessed) from other values.

With that said, if your driver spin really is 3600, the only way to bring it down to 2500 is to change your angle of attack and/or club path. The only way to put that much spin on a driver is to have a slice swing or to hit down a few degrees on the driver. Look up videos on youtube to see some instruction.

From the equipment side, you could buy heads/shafts that are naturally low spin. Shaft will not change it more than a few hundred RPMs. Or you could crank down the loft... but if you're already hitting down on the ball, a lower loft is not what you need.

I have a friend (scratch HC) who hits down on the driver a couple degrees. Went to Club Champion to try to fix the spin with equipment changes. The best they could do was reduce it from 3400 to 3100.

TLDR: work on the swing.

Something is definitely off with those numbers, enough to where we can't draw any meaningful conclusions from them.

Mizuno MP-69's are pretty typical "modern" blades with a 46* PW, and I don't know how on earth you could get it down to 5427 spin while also having 23* launch. I am pretty sure that is a physical impossibility. So either you were hitting dud golf balls, or it wasn't reading spin correctly. Either of those scenarios means the numbers can't be trusted, because this has you sitting just a tick under the PGA Tour averages for PW and 7i ball speed and distance, but WAY low on spin, and then completely dropping off the map with the driver. So either the spin is wrong, the ball speed is wrong, of the ball(s) you were hitting was in the brink of failure. All of those deficiencies would need to be addressed before drawing any conclusions.

So I just got the irons and took them straight to the monitor. I had been playing forged Cally’s and my yardages were 170 carry with the 7 and about 132 with the pw. Same 6.0 shafts. I thought maybe the mizzy’s were just flying further. Guess I’ll just take them out to the course and figure it out.

Wait.... Are you not concerned about your pw going 140 yards with 5500rpm spin? That's an even bigger issue. Your driver could just be sure to bad strikes... But that wedge spin is brutal.

Please don't tell me you were using some garbage range ball that they had laying around? If so, literally everthing you did was a waste of time and you need to go back and use ProV or something high quality.

The 7i and PW spin is likely low because he's hitting inside off a mat. That can easily drop up to 2k off the iron spin rates when compared to grass. Of course that doesn't eliminate the possibility of other errors coming from the Launch monitor in addition to that.

To figure out why the driver spin is high, you need to check face impact location and consistency (e.g. use some foot powder spray or impact tape), and also the dynamic loft from the launch monitor might help if it's available.

If it's a radar unit (Trackman or Flightscope) indoors, make sure the ball has the reflective metal dot on it

It was 116 not 119 and the carry isn't really that far off. Sounds about right - for an altitude of 3000 ft ;-)

At sea level, it would be more like 170 carry with those numbers.

The practice balls were extremely old to the point that it made me question them initially. However, I assumed the numbers wouldn’t be affected too bad. They gave me about 7 but I tried to stick with the best two out of the bunch.

Being that I haven’t utilized a launch monitor a bunch, I was surprised at how much the pw rolled out to a full carry number. Again, took a few snaps with the phone but didn’t question it too much then. Maybe I should.

Ball flight is a draw. I can’t hit a fade with the irons to save my life.

It sounds like you were being fit indoors. In that situation just bring a sleeve or two of the ball you normally play. Demo balls that have been hit a million times are no good for use in a fitting.

I'd just like to reiterate that you shouldn't trust any of those numbers. It could be from the ball or the monitor itself but it doesn't really matter. There is absolutely zero chance that a 99mph ball speed will carry 140yds or a 116mph ball speed will carry 175. Yes, low spin increases carry distance but these carry distances are just not happening with such low ball speed.
