TS3-54" - Full wedge shots

With full wedge shots in the 52*, 56* or 60* wedges, my junior's shots tend to ride up the face and then balloon (thus coming up short). I'm guessing he needs to get better at ball striking (hitting ball first in particular), moving the ball back 1/2 ball or so from the middle of the stance and getting the wedges delofted at impact a little bit more. With the PW, we don't see this effect. Only with the muscle back 52,56,60.

Anyone else see this with these wedges?

Grooves clean? Basically anything from worn groves to water on the face will cause this.

Yes. Had this issue , Really only with 60*. 52 and 56 no issue. Dropped the full 60* wedge shot , which is a tough one to pull off anyway , and the problem went away. He learned to take some off of the 56* instead, which has worked out much better in most cases. I think for most people a 60* full wedge isn’t a reliable shot for the reason you stated.

Yep, grooves were clean. Clubs are very new (he started using them in mid-March) so no wear.

Instead of moving the ball back, leave it where it is and not have such a steep AoA. Come into the ball with a more shallow swing and try to hit small draws.

A good drill is to place an alignment stick with a tee right next to the stick about 2/3 forwards and hit the ball.

This can be common with uskg wedges more than other brands. I like have others have taken out the full wedges and its not as bad. But there is a huge yardages gap between full PW and 3/4 GW in my kids case. Need to look at wedges after the summer season is over.

Did some work at the range making sure that he was transferring weight to the left side better/more. Also kept the 52,56,60 wedge shots to 3/4 swings instead of full. The ball flights and carry yardages were more consistent. We'll keep working on it. At 9 years old, I'm not worried about yardage gaps too much. Looking forward to adult wedges (and clubs) in 18 months or so for him.

Since this post, it seems like you guys have been successful getting to where you need to be going into Worlds (congrats, BTW!). Did anything change regarding the yardage gaps in wedges, or has the rest of her game just been strong enough to overcome what you weren't getting from your wedges?

Whatever ya'll are doing, can you bottle it and sent it to FL for us? :)

@MB19 Not so much things changed in terms of yardage gaps but with wedges she only hits 3/4 swings at max even use a 1/2 and 1/4 swing with wedges as well. She developed her wedge skills a lot more over COVID then before mainly because we now had the time to work at it more. But I do think dropping the full wedge swing has helped as before I felt like she was trying to nuke wedges and irons. I actually took this same theory to her irons shots and its worked well with a lot better control. She hitting irons at around 80-85% max.
Her real strength of her game is flat out distance and accuracy off the tee. Not sure if you heard but at RWB had a freak accident and her driver shaft was snapped. Had to hit 3W all weekend and she long enough that she was still out driving most kids with her 3w. But I have a few extra bottles of it but they come with a lot of emotion. A big drive is huge at these yardages, and very impressive she was still in major contention sacrificing her biggest weapon to the golf gods.

That's good info on the wedges, as my daughter's full wedge shots are often a crap shoot.
