Back to old irons

Earlier this week I went into my dads golf bag to pinch some yellow balls as my course is full of daisys on the fairway. Whilst I was there, I decided to try his irons this weekend. They are my old Tommy Armour 845 silver Scots that I played with for 20+ years. Bought them new in 92 and only last year changed to Taylormade burners. I used to hit these so sweet, but decided to try newer tech. Went from 120-150 yds with a 9 iron.

Recently my irons have been very hit and miss (15HCP) I’m normally good tee to green, but can’t putt for toffee. Normally go round in 83-89 most weekends. 80 is my best ever score.

SoI put the 845’s back in the bag this weekend. Wow. Shot 82 and 78. Even with a few dodgy putts I was well happy. Luckily I can still remember my yardages for the 845’s so all was good. Every iron I hit was spot on. Needless to say I’m back to the old tech!

Anyone else had the same thing?

Funny - I actually purchased an old set of Lynx Parallax a couple months ago. Really as a nostalgia piece as those were the irons I played in high school ('92-'96) because I was (and still am) a huge Freddie Couples fan. I was doing some bored eBaying - a favorite pastime - and saw 3-PW for $60. I was like "Eh, why not?"

When they arrived and I looked down on them ... man, memories came rushing back. Took them to the range that very day and was puring every single shot. I played more golf with them than any other iron ever so it was just familiar, ya know?

I struggled for a couple months about maybe getting them refinished and my beloved Modus 105s and Winn Excels. I mean, I do quite like my Mizunos but man ... I simply love them old school Parallax. They were in a bag here in my home office and they're what I spent the couple months of golf lockdown swinging in the back yard.

Finally said "Fuck it" ... and they're currently with Jim at The Iron Factory getting a total rebuild. Super stoked to get them back.

I've have the Tommy Armour 845's in the bag right now. Whats not to like about them, mine have the Tour stiff shafts in them and I really like that shaft. I bought them used in really good condition for $25, 3-pw.

Nothing wrong with old irons... any significant shaft difference between your sets? I’m coming to believe shaft weight alone is a huge driving force in how well you hit clubs.

Wow. That's a heck of a deal! I got mine for $100 CDN for a 1-SW.

The 845s are still a great set of clubs and could still be relevant to this day if it wasn't for the 2010 Groove rule. It must be quite the change for you to switch from Burners since those clubs have stronger lofts but their feel is much better.

Whatever works for you, going back never did it for me.

I'm trying to determine the final length for my graphite shafted 735cms. While overly-deliberating on 1/8”, started playing some Daiwa Hi Trac tours I picked up a few years ago for $28 during a few rotator surgeries. These are probably from when I started in the early 90s although I can’t find them in the annual Golf magazine club test.

Never really liked their lighter weight and anemic flight. Finally put some of those ugly tungsten squares on them. That tungsten must also have some fairy dust mixed in because they are now playing much more solidly. Actually bought a matching higher lofted wedge yesterday on eBay for $31 - $3 more than the set! I originally hesitated because of the principle of it.

I really should get the 735cm done so I don’t end up relying upon these but it’s been kind of fun.

those are the backups to the backup. In my cottage set right now with some ISI nickel wedges and an OG Rapture driver with whiteboard and rapture v2 4 wood with Kamo 660TR
