I have to agree with Tony. If Sergio had Seve's mental strength, who knows just how good he would have been.

Regarding Jacklin's comment that Garcia did not win enough.

Well the guy couldn't putt for a long time. He was never a consistent enough putter to close off majors.

Being a ball striker doesn't result in wins.

Remember the miss on the 72nd hole at the 2007 Open?

Sergio was and is a great ball striker. Struggled with the putter the entire time. Has gotten in his own way with the uncontrollable emotions. Choked on the putting green of the final hole at Carnoustie in 2007.

I’d have to disagree on that. The narrative has always been that he choked on missing the putt. The putt was a good 8-10 feet. It was the second shot into the bunker and the average bunker shot which followed that cost him.

You’re right. True and good point. Still was a lousy effort on the putt also since he couldn’t get his head together at all.

Double digit majors? Tony, Tony, Tony. How about just two or three which he probably "should" have already achieved. Seve, the guy he's comparing him to, had 5 not 10 or more and Seve was more talented than Sergio.

Hogan, Player, Watson, Trevino, Palmer, Snead, Faldo - there's some guys a lot closer to reality in terms of talking double digit majors in terms of "what ifs" and they were more singular talents than Sergio.

Good point on Jacklin above - he had golf by the tail and then . . . . he just didn't.

I'm sorry, but I find this character assassination by Jacklin a bit hard to take. What does he have to gain by this? (what bug crawled up his ****?) And you know what, players win what they win, and lose what they lose, at the end, much like a golf round, you add up the wins and congratulate yourself. This 'he could have done so much more' is so subjective, given different players and circumstances, more like one's 'potential' in regards to handicap...yea, I have the potential to shoot low, but I don't.... someone please write/post a nationalized article decrying my bad performance.,

Winning one major is very difficult. We've all been spoiled by the regular clip Tiger was winning majors and it's just not realistic. Double digits in 20 years is possible, but golfers have flaws in their games that get exposed under pressure. It's just not totally realistic because of that. Tiger and Phil's was driving, Rory's is putting and it's of course well documented Sergio's is putting and we've seen him melt down as well. If he could pull it together, he would maybe have a couple more, but that's probably it.

Seve had another gear. He was fearless and creative. I know he's the Spanish standard, but that's not fair to Sergio. Jose Maria wasn't as talented as Seve, but he mustered two green jackets, and was a stalwart on the European Tour. He's a better comparison to Sergio. Is Jose Maria more talented than Sergio? I contend no, but he dug deeper in majors to get two, which again, is insanely hard. On his own, Sergio has had a successful career. Probably not Hall of Fame worthy, but successful.

Wonder how many careers would have been different sans Tiger.

Sergio definitely was his own worst enemy multiple times, me and friends were talking about Ernie Els the other day too. His confidence really seemed gone once Tiger started dominating. He probably should have won more too

Yep. I don't completely disagree with Jacklin's point that Sergio *should* have more majors (but ten? Really?), but that whole article came across like the pot calling the kettle black.

    From the same interview

“GW: If you could have front-row seats to any concert, who would you like to see?

TJ: I’ve seen him. It was Frank Sinatra. I saw him at the Albert Hall when he was still performing. “Fly me to the Moon” and “My Way” are my favorites. I was a lyric man and I think they ran out of good lyrics about 25 years ago, to be honest with you. But I’m profoundly deaf now. I’ve got the best pair of hearing aids you can get. Noise and I do not do very well.”

Full disclosure, I did not read the article as the firewall has it blocked here at work.

Regarding putting. I have read somewhere before (perhaps on a golf website not blocked by a firewall or in a magazine (remember those?)) that Sergio is on record himself saying that he messed with his putting stroke fairly early in his career because he was told he would never be good with his cutting putting stroke. He had grown up with that stroke and had learned to succeed with it but got talked into trying to seek to have a "perfect" square strike. He stated that he never really putted decently after attempting to make the putter swing change. Could be baloney too.

Also 10 of his European wins were earlier in his career. That's significant to me because it was before a lot of the top euro talent had completely come to the PGA tour.

Back then they were almost as impressive as PGA wins. Not to start a whole intercontinental war here

So those euro wins should be given some extra respect.

This is of course a true statement. Mental toughness is what separates the all-time greats from the good players. Tiger, Jack, Hogan, Jones are all-time greats. Guys like Trevino, Seve, Faldo, Watson, Phil etc. hat that toughness for a period of time but didn't sustain it.

All of these players had talent at some level, the difference is between the ears. The ability to play your best on Sunday afternoon in a major.

Sergio is a fine player, but mentally he is more Davis Love III than Seve.

I'm not a fan of Sergio, but I can't imagine how badly I would feel if I were Sergio and I read a piece like this. We should all be thinking "how would Sergio respond should he read my post?" before ripping him

    These articles are unnecessarily cruel.

Jacklin is an idiot to say that.

He had to know how hurtful this comment was especially to compare to Seve.

Gotta be a beef for a pro to say this about another,

Jacklin told Golfweek. “Seve had more courage in his little finger than this lad.”

    Totally agree.

Sergio’s potential is just that. His follow through is lacking and it’s what he’s missing between the ears that prevents his potential from being actualized.

Mental toughness, concentration, focus are all applicable to golf. Courage? No. Compare any golfer to the health care workers walking into a hospital, and the golfer looks like, well, a golfer. Serious lack of class on the part of Jacklin.

We would need about 30 majors a year to support all of the “this player should have won x majors in career” articles and posts. Maybe more.

Sergio is a great talent. Could he have won more? Probably. But, like all of us he has foibles. Saying Sergio should have done this, or done that could apply to every person on the planet. We all have regrets, we all wish we could have done x, y, or z differently. Judging Sergio for what he "could have" done seems a bit hypocritical.
