Can you win a skin in a round you withdraw?

Recommended Posts

Playing a men’s club tourney with someone who got a gross 2 on a par 4. This wins a flighted net skin, an over the field gross skin, closest to the flag in 2, and is in the big season long eagle on par 4 pot.

On 18, he misses a handful of tap-ins in a row, picks up his ball and walks off. When it comes time for scorecards, signs his with 18 blank saying ‘whatever’ on 18 and leaves.

A withdraw for the tournament seems clear, but what about the other stuff? He played out the hole he eagled legally- does his meltdown on 18 disqualify him from all of the other stuff he paid entry to?

I would think so too but the club is taking away all of it. It’s great for me bc I am the only other gross par 4 eagle this season but it doesn’t seem right. USGA rules are so clear(ish) but skins rules seem so fly-by-night. This doesn’t seem right to me but have nothing to back it up with.

A skins game is 18 different small tournies. So his skin stands. His nearie stands. Doesn’t matter if he WD’s or DQ’s. He still beat everyone in the field.

Some of our events are 2 day events. We have a skins game each day. Some guys can’t play both days, buy they’ll play 1 of the days and get in the skins game. So they aren’t even in the event, but are in the skins game.

You can still have the skins if the round is rain-shortened. So if the last group only gets through, say, 13 holes, you can still have skins 1-13.

If you beat the field, you get the skin whether you finish the round or not.

I’m not on the board, but this is my thinking as well. The $50 nearie or whatever the skins work out to be ($10-$50?) are not too big of a deal but we have a couple thousand in the eagle pot and there is also a season long ‘Ringer Pot’ where we take your best score from each hole all season and pay book money for that. He made a ton of birdies on tough holes too (+ handicap on a good day). All that is thrown out.

This isn't so much a Rules of Golf issue but a Committee issue and a "gambling" issue. If you're going to play for money, especially in a format not covered by the rules, you better develop rules to cover every reasonable contingency. I'm not sure I would call quitting without finishing a "reasonable contingency", so it then goes back to the Committee to decide. Personally, I'd say the skin should stand. However, I can also understand taking the position that if a player is childish enough to quit without finishing, that player forfeits all winnings he might have earned previously in the round.

There's certainly no rules of any kind that I'm aware of regarding skins. That's why I suggested the "committee" has to define this, in advance preferably. If they haven't already done so, whatever is decided this time should be the rule going forward.

IMO - If someone withdraws from legit event or $$$ game side bets or winnings are cancelled for that person. Match play may have different results. But all rules need to be stipulated before the game starts.

How many guys all year didn't finish a hole and wrote down max double? Probably most of the field

Sorry but this guy is getting screwed by others that don't like him

You can't apply the standard ROG to a skins game and year long gambling games

Bogus to disqualify him from all the other stuff. Skins games are essentially a one hole match vs everyone else in the field, by picking up he essentially conceded the hole to the field, nothing more. Bogus to strip him off all the stuff he won outright. The pro should just give him NDB for the hole and that is that.

I am another for counting the scores where he finished in the skins game and the proxy as well. Unless there are existing rules stating otherwise. (Obviously his 18-hole score would not be acceptable as he did not finish.) In the US, clubs often have best ball tournaments and and various goofy formats where you don't have to finish every hole. It can create bad habits.

Remember that he is an amateur and paid his entry fee. And perhaps a greens fee. As another mentioned, I would also pay a hole in hole "insurance" pot in this situation. I see it as no different than if he sustained an injury or was called away in an emergency. If you start the round, you're most likely not getting a refund. I would consider it very harsh if they do not count it and would speak up in his favor. The Board can write a rule for situations like this going forward if they see fit.

My take: Skins should always (and in my experience) be considered an Optional 'Game' (just like CTP). You are putting $ for that specific extra game that has nothing to do with the overall round. One common example in our leagues, is if a player was DQ'd mid round, he still gets to compete for the skins. Also, I have seen WD for injury and the skins won were maintained by that person - imo rightfully so.

There are rounds of golf which are only skins - every time I have played one of those rounds it is a pick up at double. (pop reason).

I would also throw out another angle per se: Per the rules of golf, skins(optional) is seen as "permissible gambling".....pretty sure. So if it is "gambling", to me, it really has nothing to do with the overall score. Just like the hole in one....there are a lot of events where you can buy a ticket just for the HIO (or a putting contest) - you don't even need to play. It is a standalone prop bet.

This is a common league definition, which suggests it is a separate game based on the score of a single hole.:SCRATCH SKINS - A scratch skin game is based on actual score on the hole.HANDICAP SKINS  - The handicap skins game will be based on the players’ handicap that has been given to them for that week.

There are all kinds of Best Ball of Partners, Member Guest, etc, that include Skins, closest to the Pin, etc, with guys picking up numerous times.

Unless you are playing for low gross, low net individual, an X or Max Stroke Control hole, does NOT negate special prizes!

The USGA DQ rule doesn't apply in this case.

"The USGA DQ rule doesn't apply in this case."

None of the USGA rules apply to settling bets for formats not discussed in the rules. That's why the organizers (the Committee) have the responsibility to define these things in advance. I agree, and have said this, that I'd accept his score for skins, but a Committee could certainly take the opposite view, as long as they publish the rule in advance.

I've been playing money games wrong this entire time! Didn't realize that if I leave early I didn't owe for the holes I lost. I think some people owe me money!

I'm with most people on this one, he won the side contests, he should win the prize. Sportsmanship and gambling often don't go hand in hand.

C'mon now. You know Pepper. He's GOT to "win" the argument somehow. LMAO

Dave, as usual has it right.

OP wrote "Playing a men's club tourney". This sounds to me like a somewhat informal event. i.e. not run by another organization like a county, city or state. As others mentioned, with all the individual events within the tournament like closests, skins, whatever, if the event is closed out the result stands.

OP also mentioned it was a WD for the tournament seemingly indicating there were low gross and low net prizes as well and yes, for them it's a DQ simply because he didn't finish a hole.

If there was no rule about not finishing,,,,,,,,,,, I suspect the committee didn't like the guy. With no written rule about it their decision is definitely suspect.

You assume. And to make your argument you included a 14 hole qualifier. LOL Stroke or match, someone that plays any number of holes, thinks he's losing and will have to pay, quits to keep from paying is pond scum SANDBAGGER. You can call it what ever, but you're not going to change my mind. And I am not arguing further as I am not co-dependent. Have a good day.

Some of you that like to argue should have went to university and applied for the college debate team. You would have learned a thing or two about arguing a position.
