At what club length do you play your 5 wood?

Interested to see what others do, noting that bag composition will have an impact on what you do with your 5 wood:

you game a single fairway wood so your 5 wood may be lofted down and you may be after both distance and ease of launch.you game two or more fairway woods so your 5 wood is for a more specific purpose; perhaps you don't play a hybrid (or two) also, perhaps you do.So at what club length do you play your 5 wood, can you state plus also outline what is your fairway wood/hybrid bag composition? Why did you decide on your 5 wood club length? Interested in your desired outcome and thought process.

For context, I game both a 3 wood and a 5 wood, no hybrid and then a 3 iron. Reviewing 5 wood shaft choice including club length; high-ish single figure cap, low 100's mph driver speed, I play my 3 wood as a 2ndary tee club plus distance fairway and my 5 wood as a higher traj position fairway, for longer approach into greens and as a (partial) rescue club from rough.

been experimenting and like a 17.5* Ping G400 down to 16.9* with a little longer shaft...play it as a 4 wood

and then thinking next club will be 18* or 19* hybrid

Play F8+ 3W at 43. Have either a F8+ 5W at 42, SIM 3H at 40.25, or an Epic Forged 4i as a driving iron (coming in the mail today!!) at 39.5.

Long. My 5W plays at 43", 2014 Taylormade distance chasing I guess, so I basically play it as a 4w since I go Driver-Fairway-Hybrid.

41.75" from end of grip. It's the stock length of the Cobra f6 baffler. 17.5° neutral, playing at 18.5°. I hit it almost as far as my 15° 43" 3w off the deck.

I have a 2i hybrid that I bought in lieu of a 5 wood because most 5 woods on my budget look closed to me which I can't deal with. It is 40.5" long and by all accounts I should be able to hit it 220 yards. My course is pretty short at 6500 yards so I may use it as my main driving club. Plus a good friend is starting golf and I don't want to be too much farther down the fairway than him.

Callaway Epic Flash SZ 3w turned down to 17 deg is the longest club I carry (other than driver). 42.5"

Please see my signature. I like the HL versions from TM. The 3 wood is 16.5* while the 5 wood is 21* that I play at 42.75" which is 1/2" long. I prefer a bit higher trajectory and find these work really well for me.

I don’t always carry a 5 wood. But when I do, I prefer a 17.5° compact head (Cobra F9 Tour, Baffler, etc.) low launch 70-75g shaft (HZD Smoke, Rogue MAX), 0.5” shorter than 3W.

17.5 degree G410 opened up and delofted to 16.5* with extra length added to make it between a 3 and 5 wood. Probably the easiest to hit off the turf fairway I've ever had. Just as good off the tee

I play a 3 & 5 wood...5 wood is 17.5 @ 42.5", which leaves room to choke down to cover the gap to my 4 iron.

Get a Cobra LTD Pro 4-5 wood and loft it depending on the course you're playing. You won't need a 3 wood cause the 4-5 is crazy long and easy to hit.

The TS2/TS3 models go: 43.00 (3W), 42.50 (4W), 42.00 (5W), 41.50 (7W).

Previous Titleists went: 43.00 (3W/4W), 42.50 (5W), 42.00 (7W).

41.75" right now on my 915FD 18* turned down to 17.25*. It usually backs up the matching 3-wood at 42.5" set to 14.25* but I want to experiment with a slightly longer shaft when using it as my only fairway wood with I drop the 3-wood and add a wedge.

You asked for it, so here it is.

My longer FW is up for grabs:

Callaway Alpha 815: 18* standard loft set to 17* / shaft stock length at 42.0"...; orTour Edge XRail 4W 16.5* / shaft stock length at 42.5"I also carry an XRail 7W 21* loft / shaft stock length at 41"

Cobra FlyZ 4H set at 22* minimum loft / shaft stock length at 39.75"

For XRail 4W, if I'm smart I choke down a 1/2" on shots from fairway for better control.

My game plan: I've played some variation of 4W + 7W for nine seasons. When I'm swinging well I carry my driver maybe 220 yards. So, I hit a FW off the deck maybe five times a round. 7W is my rocket club out of moderate summer rough.

I have good driver control, so I tee off with it unless it would run through landing area on short hole. For those short tight holes, I usually hit one of these from tee: {4W, 7W, 4H}

One possible test: Put a face decal on your 5W, and hit 10 shots. If the impact marks are all over the face, chances are you would benefit from a shorter shaft.

Interesting. If I had a 5W, I’d likely play it to 240. I don’t find gapping that critical that far away. 4i 4H 3W Driver

41.75 G410 5 wood. Turned down to big minus but think I am going to neutral to get more upright. Went little + and draw setting on driver and it’s been so good. Got rid of the high fades and way more roll out

I play a variety of courses from long private club courses to shorter public courses. I love the variety and the different challenges presented which is why I have an arsenal of clubs (do you like that description?) and select my bag to suit each round (and also what I am hitting well - no point gaming a club that you've lost confidence with). Also have quite a few shaft options although no specific 5 wood shaft at this moment (bought the club 2nd hand to get the clubhead, on sold the shaft as it was a noodle).

Thanks to everyone for their input, as I expected there are so many choices to suit individual needs, been interesting reading.

I going to play my 5 wood (Srixon F45) at 42.5 inches set at 19 deg for now - very middle of the road, I know. I may further reduce the length to 42 inches after some more testing. Shaft will be an Xcaliber FW stiff flex. I have plenty of interchangeable head weights from 3 to 11 grams so can get the swing weight that I want.

Looks like I’m the shortest on here. I play driver at 44, 3 wood at 42 and 5 wood at 41. All 1 degree upright all with rubber tungsten tip weights or heavier weights in the head ports to bring the swing weight up to around d4

my miss tends to be heel side so the short length helps mitigate that plus i find I can control it better
