What do you use to repel these stable flies that bite your ankles??

Long pants and if need be tucked into the socks....................Also spray area with bug repellent.

Flies usually don't care whether or not you are using bug spray. I've used good bug spray with 30% DEET (most you can legally buy in Canada) and it doesn't work. Pants and long sleeves or bug clothes are the way to go. Otherwise you have to suck it up and wait for the heat to drive them back in to the shadows.

The Native Americans used to coat themselves with bear fat. That seems to work, but first you've got to get yourself a dead bear.

Deep Woods Off. I carry a can in by golf bag because we get voracious mosquitos. It seems to work on deer flies and buffalo gnats as well.

Duct tape worked well and was necessary on one particular Canadian fly in fishing trip.

A friend told me about this, and I've tried it recently and it works to keep away mosquitoes, not sure about flies. Nope, I'm not kidding. Walmart, Target about $5.

Whether this works with flies or not I can't say, but down in Mississippi we used the Avon product, Skin So Soft, to ward off the gnats that were so bad in the spring and fall. Down there, gnats actually bite, and the locals call them, "Flying Teeth". I believe the main ingredient in Skin So Soft is mineral oil, which is easy to find and cheap.
