Watching golf on TV..

I used to be a genuine golf addict in my younger days..(am 74 and have been playing golf since I was 12)..

I would devour all the golf books, magazines and watch all the golf on TV I could from beginning to end..

Except for the majors I now cannot bring myself to watch any golf on TV except for the last day..

Anybody else feel the same??

I guess that I watch less than I used to. The same old, same old of watching religiously for the last 20 years has made it become somewhat monotonous but I guess a large part of it is that circumstances based as well with much more things to do with my time now.

your history describes mine perfectly. Golf consumed me from age 12- 24ish.

now, it’s not so much that I “can’t bring myself to watch” but I just don’t care like I did. Family is a bigger joy than watching golf. If it’s on and I am free, I will watch. But I can’t devote 4 days to a tournament like I could in High school, college or when working in the golf shop. I don’t particularly want to watch the last hour or two on Sunday if I haven’t seen anything leading up to it. It’s the same for “Binge watching” a tv series - I just can’t. I’ll not isolate myself from my family to watch tv like that. The “can’t bare” it moniker isn’t accurate, it’s definitely “have better things to do” as I have gotten older and more important things have replaced watching tv.

Aside from the obvious (Majors) watching more/less of a regular tournament relies on two factors: where are they playing and who is in contention... if it's Bob Johnson leading Sam Smith and George Williams by 14 strokes at the Florida "Flat Sandy No Trees Invitational", I don't particularly care. Phil Mickelson 3-way tied with Dustin Johnson and Cameron Champ at the Colonial Sunday morning? Heck I might even DVR that one in case something magical happens.

Totally agree with you. I will add one more factor, and that is whatever else I may have going on that weekend. Being a typical Mon-Fri worker I don't always want to sacrifice my increasingly rare free time sitting inside. But if it's a major I schedule my personal life around it, and luckily the girlfriend is cool with that haha.

Weekends when the bigger names are on is good. Relaxing to watch in the afternoon and it’s on for like 4 hours so you can start it, do stuff while it’s on, even jump out for an hour or more and get back to it since the leaders are last.

Dont have to sit there glued to the screen, that can get boring.

I do tape thursday, look at it afterwards to get a feel for the course, especially the last holes. I tape saturday and sunday, following the leaders, fastforwarding to avoid leaderboards, putt line examinations and boring players. Waste much less time now than before. US tournaments I watch to the morning coffee the day after.

I do see a lot of Masters and the Open. Sometimes the other two as well.

What has changed? You love of the game? Too much coverage? The change in the quality of coverage?

My only desire is that there is more shots shown on the broadcast and the leaders are not the only ones followed. Sometimes watching specific holes on the internet is cool cause you get to the different ways that each pro is playing the hole. It is also cool because you can see how awesome the pros are at recovering after a bad shot.

Other than majors, I'm more likely to watch live Euro golf because of the time of day. Most "normal" tournaments I don't set aside time to watch, especially the first couple of days, but I might have an evening replay on as more background noise than anything. Need a pretty compelling story to get me to watch on a Saturday or Sunday in the spring/summer.

I’m 63, have played golf since elementary school. I never watched much TV golf, I found the personalities boring, the announcers boring, and am not sure why they moved locations because it seemed like the same course every week. I actually started watching more because my wife wanted to watch Tiger and it was kind of cool that she was interested in a sport that I played (she does not play golf and is a tennis player). Once she discovered the Tennis Channel we started watching tennis while eating breakfast and that was fun and we decreased our golf viewing. Now, on a Sunday afternoon, if there is a compelling tournament, we might watch. Sometimes, in the morning, I’ll turn on the Golf Channel if a Euro event is broadcast while I’m working out. Honestly, since the lockdown started, I can’t say I have missed televised golf. I am playing more right now and that’s pretty nice!

Fair question..

I still love the game but don't play much nowadays..

I guess I've kinda almost seen them all and after Tiger there's nobody on the horizon that keeps my interest much ..

I do enjoy the "shot tracer" a lot though..

  • 2 weeks later...

I watch to see the swings and the shots. Sorta feel like the rest is pro wrestling esque. Thursday and Friday they are grinding dropping every putt they can. Then Sat and Sun they are jamming putT’s at the hole like someone who has never played golf ever. Missing putts by 6 inches, I mean missing A TON of putts. Then they do the “Oh gosh what’s wrong with me” shrug . It’s kinda stupid .

but yeah just watch for the shots and swings to see how I can change my game.

I just watch the swings. Outcomes I care less about.

The only gripe I have is that the conditions they play in typically don't align with my definition of golf - fairways that are giant runways, no rough, no brush under trees, perfect sand traps, an abundance of level lies, and greens with no imperfections. I just can't relate.

I watch most tournaments but 100% on PVR. That way I watch at my own convenience. Some Sundays I just watch the final 1/2 hour to see the winner. I actually don't mind knowing who won before I start watching - unless it is a major. And - I think I prefer the "no fans" tournaments like now - the stupid shouting comments are beyond annoying.
