Interested to see what his launch numbers are with steel, in comparison with someone with similar SS. He clearly seemed less comfortable with "full length" graphite shafts.

Wonder if he will put it in play at the Colonial, or if this is just a poke in the eye for mortals.

Right there with you. You end up way heavier and way softer than you were before which at least for me is a terrible combo. The TXG guys did a test with this and they came to the same conclusion.

Right, but Walker is a tour pro and I am here discussing his choices. So, take it for what it is worth. If he likes it, more power...

Correct. Until he explains his choice we have no idea. I was agreeing with your statement that aside from feel, there doesn’t seem to be a benefit and that the TXG guys confirmed that with their test that showed a wider contact area on the face and less ball speed (and distance) than an appropriately fitted graphite shaft.

I agree. I was just throwing the obligatory "he is tour pro, and I am just a hack" statement before someone else did. Haha. I think that there is an obvious talent gap but that his equipment choice still leaves me baffled.

I like Jimmy Walker quite a bit, but I'll be honest it just seems like he is struggling with his game and trying to find "an old feel" or something to get him back into form. I'm skeptical but I really do hope it works for him.

Seems as if he should be able to find something in a weight and profile in graphite. There are really too mAny options nowadays and I cannot keep up.

TXG did a steel v graphite comparison and could find nothing beneficial about going back to steel.

Completely a feel thing, Jimmy likes heavy and soft, nothing heavier and softer than an old steel shaft, well maybe a S300 or R300 but Freq wise even tipped to length the X100 doesn't play nearly as stiff as the majority of X flex graphite shafts out there.

There you go. Thanks for clearing that up because I hadn’t seen his explanation. Makes sense if he likes heavy and soft. I hope it works out for him, seems like a good dude who’s really searching for anything to get him going.

Colonial does not require as much distance off the tee as other tour courses. If he uses this setup at Winged Foot, then it is for real.

They did. The 45'' was a sledgehammer and made pretty bad results.

Maybe all that rare steak has gone to Jimmy's head... who knows. Maybe he'll go hickory next??

If the new shafts are so much better why is a tour pro who won a major with graphite shafts in his woods going back to steel?

This could work for Jimmy at Colonial, since accuracy is everything and distance is secondary (for these guys). If it gives him the confidence to hit a bunch of fairways, with a bit more distance than this 3-wood, it works for him.

He could also try an old hickory shaft if he wants to go even heavier and softer!
