Recommend Game improvement irons for a low spin player?

I’m in the search for new irons. I don’t keep. Handicap but my average score is 90 and trending down after playing for about a year. A fitting or buying new really isn’t in the cards right now.

My driver swing speed is up to 110-112 depending on which big box store I’m in. The main issue with my irons is the have regular flex shafts in them and for what I’d spend restarting them, I think I can find something better suited to me on the used market.

The other issue is that I am a lower spin iron player. My 7 iron (30*) spins only about 4500rpm. I demo’ed used rogue pros today and the 7 iron spun about the same. I hit an Apex Pro for comparison and spin was higher, around 6000. But I’m not consistent enough in my ball striking to benefit from a players iron.

Can anyone recommend a game improvement type iron that might help get my spin numbers up? The course I play most is on the short let side and does have slow greens so with a good strike I can hold a green and most second shots for me are a sand wedge. On some other courses were I need a 7 iron or longer on occasion I will roll off the green or at least to the fringe more often than not.

If those spin numbers are off a mat in a store, you are probably spinning the ball more than you think.

Are you getting proper launch, height, decent angle on the ball with your 7 iron?

New game improvement irons have stronger lofts. So your spin numbers may be lower.

You might want to think about going to a fitter, getting your numbers and a shaft that fits you well, and go shopping the used market. Might cost you $100.

Try an F9 iron as they add some spin for me. I really like them, but am trying the G700 right now. Don't let the sole fool you, it really works.

Yes all that is in store hitting off a mat. I can’t recall what the exact numbers were but launch, decent, and height all were in a good range. I reminder the spin most because it seemed so low. I may have to look at a fitter if I can do that for $100 or less.

Find a set of Titleist AP1 (either 716 or 718), they are very forgiving. I normally spin my 7 iron about 5,000 and I was spinning the AP1 irons about 6,800 with the 7 iron. I did have a set of F9 irons, I enjoyed them but the spin rate for me was about the same as my other sets.

Stopping power comes from spin or angle of decent(45*+). I have found the i210s to spin the most for me, as I too am a low spin player. Also look at some shafts that will be higher launch/spin. A diff. ball may also help. Try something with more spin. Clubs today can be adjusted weaker or strong lofts. If there is an iron out there you like, you can weaken them by 2* to help with spin too.

I’d like to try i210, wasn’t sure if they fit into the same category as a forgive GI iron. I’ve thought about a different ball too. I play a Srixon Q-Star Tour. So not a low spin ball but I know there are others out there. For price and performance I have found it hard to beat.

What ball are you playing/using to demo the clubs? A ball change can make a huge difference in spin on irons.

There happened to be a Q-Star tour in the bay so I used that. I wasn’t planing on hitting anything but when I’m near that store I usually pop in and see what’s in the used section.

I would recommend using the srixon z star, bridgestone tour b xs, or mizuno rb tour if your looking to increase your spin. All are a softer ball. Jumping from the q star tour to the z star mad a big difference in my ability to get proper check on the ball. It's worth buying a sleeve and testing it against something else in the fitting bay at least. Then you can test them on course to verify.

Ping i210 is easily enough GI to meet most needs. The iBlade also has a rep for spinning a bit more, and is more forgiving than the name suggests. Both could be worth a look. The i200 would also, for that matter.
As @Bobb3rdown just mentioned, you can add to this with the ball you play. The Kirkland Signature 3 piece ball is the highest spinning ball around, but it may cost you a few yards off the tee due to that spin. The ZStar or Bridgestone B XS would be good choices, that don't have an equivalent higher driver spin that might cost you distance.

I may take a look at a ball change to help with spin. But I still need to do something about my irons, the regular flex shafts are not helping me at the moment.

Some used srixon 565 or 585 would be my choice for a "game improvement" iron. Forged feel. With alot of forgiveness. And generally good shaft options.

Shaft is going to be one of the biggest factors. More than club head

Also don't assume GI or SGI clubs will be higher spin. I spin my 2016 Apex Pros far more than my G410's with the same shaft. Some of this is due to lofts but it's not just that, there is a really noticeable difference

If I can get a fitting I may try to find the right shaft. But I’m not sure I can spend the money a fitting and the find and afford what I was fit to on the used market. I know I need to go up in flex.

ita been my assumption that GI irons are more low spin. Since I seem to be somewhat low spin with irons, that’s why I have asked about higher spinning GI type iron heads. I don’t have the ball striking consistency to move into a players iron that would offer more spin. I know spin isn’t the only thing to focus on. I think I’d be better suited to a GI head that was on the higher spin side.

If you liked the Apex plus how about the Cf19. The stop pretty well for me.

I’d like to find a cf16 to hit since those are closer to my price range used and from what I’ve read, not all that different from cf19.

You're about a 20 handicapper so you probably don't hit the sweet spot often enough to really benefit from an iron change.

IMO you're putting the cart before the horse.

Get (more ?) lessons first and become a better ballstriker to the point where better fit irons WILL make a difference.

Then look for the "optimum" equipment.

Once you learn to swing the club better and make better/more s\consistent contact you may find out that you're not a "high spin" player after all.

Do you have a place, that is not a big box store, that does fittings and sells used clubs?

We have a place that will do a fitting for new irons or anything they have on the used rack.

I am an AP1 player for a long time (AP1 712). I am trying an i210 7-iron in hopes of picking up the whole set. I also have some AP2 irons 7 - PW. The i210 seems to fit between the AP1 and AP2.

Ping G700 with Recoil shaft. So easy to spin & hit higher. Plus, they have a nice feel.

The main change I’m trying to make is to move from regular to stiff shafts, not solely just find higher spinning irons. I know the regular shafts aren’t doing me any favors.

My iron play for the most part isn’t where I bleed strokes to stay in about the 90 avg. I loose them off the tee (which is why I’ve gone back to mostly a 4 wood unless the hole is over 450 yards). Or I start to have trouble lining up putts partway through a round.

That’s good to hear. I’m not pulling the trigger on anything for a little while yet but it seems difficult to find AP1’s with stiff shafts in my limited searching so far. i210 and i200 seem more readily available.
