Magna - am I just being nostalgic?

Going back to the mid to late 90's, Top Flite released the Magna.... This golf ball was bigger than the average ball, and it created the hubbub around the golfing world..... I do believe Hal Sutton played them...

Now, for those of a certain age...... Were these balls really THAT GOOD, or am I just reminiscing too much?

Magna was the bigger diameter ball, however the Strata line was a nice multilayer product; particularly the Strata Tour Ace- that had card suit stamp reminiscent of the older Penfold balls. The Strata Tour Ace was played by O’Meara, Furyk, and Sutton.

Was the Magna overly awesome?

The Magna was a distance ball with a surlyn cover. Two piece I believe.

Strata was a multilayer ball with a soft cover that spun just as much ( if not more than) the urethane covered Titleist professional.

Callaway was out w/ the Magna ball last year. It is nothing special. But, I would recommend it to the beginner golfer. They are easier to hit and nice to chip with too. Any average golfer would find the ball weird.

Played these when they came out. Easier to get airborne but larger ball made putting a little harder because the cup is only so big...

Man I hated those things. I remember when they came out. I was working at a course and they had the 2 ball sample packs. Now in those days I had a fast powerful swing and a rope hooking problem. We were messing around one day and I hit this guy's King Cobra metal driver with a graphite shaft. Hit the darndest rope hook I ever hit and the combination of a rock hard Carolina fairway that thing bounded like the Energizer bunny. But in all fairness I was still playing Persimmon and steel with the HT-100 ball. Those things felt literally like rocks to me then

The new ones are soft. Feels like hitting knuckle balls off the driver. I didn't like them at all. But, could use them now for chipping yips. I don't see these balls sticking around. Initially had high hopes.

Haha, funny to hear about the Magma, I got my first hole-in-one with one of those and so I got a plastic trophy that you stick the ball in, still have that trophy somewhere...with probably one of the only remaining Magmas in the world...

You're reminiscing. It was a terrible ball. Short. It didn't help that it came along at the same time as the Precept EV extra spin ball...which replaced balatas and professionals in my bag back then (and is a big reason I'm a Bridgestone fan today).

I thought it was a terrible ball for my game. I didn't like that it was bigger and I wouldn't play it.

My friend loved it. Has was a hacker at the time and thought a bigger ball was easier to hit and it flew straighter.

I use to mess with him and say because it was bigger it had more wind drag and wouldn't fly as far.

Seeing this thread is perfect timing for me. I actually found one on the course last week and cracked up laughing. I'm still playing with my friend after all these years. I told him you will never geuss what ball I found for you. After several failed geusses I threw it to him and he was excited to see what it was and put it in play on the next hole. LOL
