Loneliest club in your bag?

What club do you use the least that occupies a space in your bag and why do you keep it in there?

Mine is definitely my 54* MD5 wedge. Ever since I started carrying a 58* MD5, I find that I reach for it more often than the 54*. In fact, the 54* is getting used less and less.

I'm hanging on to it because I keep thinking I need something between my 48* MD5 and my 58* MD5, but it seems like with as little use at the 54* is getting, maybe I don't. What do you think? Keep it or pull it?

A year ago I would’ve said around the same. I have a 46* pw then went 52/58 and rarely used the 52. Now I just go from my PW to a 56* and don’t care too much about that gap. Now I would say my 3i and it’s only in my bag just in case I need to hit off rocks bc I don’t mind damaging it lol

I’d say find ways to use 54* and if all those shots you can do with a 48 and or 58 pull it.

Boy, can I relate to that. I was having a hard time hitting my 3w straight so I ditched it for a while. I relied on a 5w and it was making it tough on some long par 5's and messed drives off long par 4's. Yesterday, I carried both the 3w and 5w and hit the 3w a 3 times. 1 did go off to the right (me, not the club) but the other two were good. I decided to put the 3w back in the bag and pull the 5w for a while and see how it goes. I've got a 4h to fill the gap between my 5i and 3w.

Depending on the course, probably either the 4H or the 4i. If one of the two is uncooperative during warm-up it usually stays in the bag.

5 iron for me. I don’t often find myself at that distance. It’s in there because occasionally I do need it. I will sometimes use it to punch out of something instead of a hybrid.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

#1 would likely be my 50* wedge as it can go months without being used and then magically I'll end up with that yardages a few times a round. Second would likely be my 5i, just never seem to have a need for it and have debated on dropping it for another wedge.

Same.

I hit my 3W just as well as my 5W but for whatever reason, I'm more confident with my 5W and almost always reach for it instead of the 3.

My home course, where i play about 75 rounds a year, often requires almost every club in my bag, This is simply due to the yardages (some longer par 3s and 5s) and the setup shots you need on some of the shorter tight holes, and of course how all those holes play under damp vs dry conditions. My whole bag gets a very good workout over the year. I'm guessing that's fairly uncommon.

I'm not a very long hitter (driver carry 240) so that's also a factor. I don't get to play bomb & gouge, so I have to play more positional.

4c0b3f3a-486b-4b74-bb98-91cd391ee073.jpegThe 3 iron is non existent for me in my men’s league play. The 4 iron I can on command turn over right to left and get the trajectory desired where as the two iron I get the left to right shape off the tee or deck that I require. There are no partial shots from 2-7 irons in my game.

You are allowed 14 clubs and I have no problems getting by with 12-13 clubs which I walk with.

Why? Not trying to create an argument but just trying to understand why you do this?

I carry 13 clubs... i have for a long as I can remember. Mostly because I always felt that with 14 clubs, I have 1 or 2 that never got used. I don't carry a 3 iron because I never used it. My 2 hybrid is better in every way. I only carry 52 and 58 wedges. I discovered that when I carried a 3rd wedge, the one in the middle never got used. If I need a lower shot, I use the 52. Higher shots get the 58. 58 full swing is around 95. 52 full song is around 110. I just work on hitting these two different distances by varying trajectory or moving up and down the grip.

I use all 14 because I play various tees and wind conditions change things pretty dramatically around here. Lots of forced/semi-forced layups off the tee prevents driver use on quite a few holes so 3W, 3h, 4h, 5i, and 6i get used somewhat often on tee shots. All wedges are used for full shots and short game.
