eBay better option than BST now...?

Quick rant/woke'ness/notice of trend...

BST used to be the unicorn of golf gear/equipment and now its nothing more than buyers trying to get the cheapest deal on above average golf gear/equipment. BST has never really been a bargain barrel atmosphere but somehow has turned into such since the site re-vamp (call it what you will). I am all for scoring a deal but i've noticed newer members and sometimes older member telling me what they will pay for it rather than asking if I will "accept" a certain price. My answer is always, "If you can find the listed equipment you're inquiring about for a better price and/or condition, feel free to go buy that equipment". Almost every time I list within the first 15 mins, someone is looking to cut prices anywhere from $15-$300 (depending on item and price). I try and be polite and respond with a "No thanks", but it does tend to become an annoyance. Of course this behavior does not apply all the time but just from experience as a frequent seller, its very uncommon to get your asking price (please note, items already listed at a discount and I try to list competitive and reasonable prices, I am not looking to get rich) and you have to "throw something in" if you get full asking price. I recently posted 3 items for sale which all got inquires for way below asking price. I closed my ad and listed on eBay...what do you know, within 24 hours all 3 items sold for my actual listing price and buyers paid for shipping. Really makes it tough to want to list here with a certain expectation of it being a bargain barrel type of place.

I will caveat the above with, this is obviously not all buyers/seller. Just something I have noted to be more of a common action vs. uncommon action.

Carry on and be well.

If you still have the Srixon Z785 iron set, I’m going to give you $37 shipped for them. There is a tiny imperfection on the 7 iron. PM me your PP address. I’ll have my secretary send you the money in a few days once I get my locked PP account sorted out. And can you send them to a non-verified address for me? I’ve decided to leave the house in the Hamptons and have relocated to a cozier place in Pahrump, NV. It’s a lovely 1962 double wide. Thanks!

If you list something for 300 someone will immediately offer you 200 - you will be lucky to sell for 270.

If you list for 350 hoping to get 300 you will never get offers. It's a tricky balance, but overall it is still better than paying ebay fees. You just have to take offers and variance into account.

People lowballing undercutting will never go away - I have seen people on this site publicly offer $3.50 for something someone was selling for $5 so its all part of the game

I think you’ve hit it straight on the head with this post. Finding that balance is the most difficult part of the BST. Besides the obvious of people wasting your time with no intent on purchasing. At the end of the day, the BST is still a great thing, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come with some drawbacks.

It’s certainly frustrating. I think everyone can relate to the flood of lowballers coming in almost immediately after posting. Then you have to have that awkward conversation where you say you just posted it, but want to wait a day or so to see if you can get your asking price. Usually the buyer understands, but by the time you message them back in a day or so with a reasonable counter offer they are suddenly no longer interested. It’s annoying, but at the end of the day as long as you don’t get on the BST with the intent of getting rich, it shouldn’t bother you. I’ve had my listing up for over a month now and just sold the first thing. I know I’ll get rid of it all eventually whether it be BST, Facebook, or simply trading it in at a golf shop to buy some balls or something. Either way golf is a passionate hobby (for those of us who aren’t professionals), not an investment.

Ugh, I hate the best price question. I already listed a price. If you don't want to pay it, send me an offer. People just looking to get you down right off the bat so they can take you down a few more $$ after that.

Mixed bag. I’ve had a couple people request cancellations on eBay. I just list on both spots and wherever it sells first. I don’t mind offers the worst that happens is I say no.

Just remember how much you pay in fees on eBay. Then you get hit with the pay pal fees on top of that. I never have any trouble selling here as long as you price items aggressively. There are way too many ads listed here that are asking WAY more than market value for an item. If people did more research ahead of time thy wouldn't get as many low ball offers.

Right now is prime golf season for most so everything is going a bit higher than normal. You won’t see those same prices at the end of the season or over the winter.

Im kicking myself for selling things over the winter/early spring, could’ve gotten substantially more if I would’ve held onto most of it and sold it all now.

Its as simple as, I sold the low ball offered items for an appropriate price on eBay including taxes and shipping. My post is pointing out the "bargain bin barrel low ball offers" mentality that is becoming of the BST post site re-vamp. Next question.

My problem with BST is the wanna be fake entrepreneurs. Bunch of broke dudes peddling stuff for twice the price. For example, I’ll bet the avg price of a lamb ball marker is 2x the price. Also, look at Jordan’s. I bought 2 pairs of 11s last week Well above face value ***go look at eBay they sale for this blah blah blah bs** eBay is full of broke dciks too take your stupid donut ball maker and shove it up your.... you get the drift

Stop being an opportunist and start a real business. I bought a new putter and GAVE my old Scotty away and I have sold stuff on there for cheap cheap cheap. I’m not trying to hit a lick

BST is a buyer's market, eBay a seller's , that's just how it is. Even with the 10% cut off the top, eBay is a more lucrative sell most times. Items are "worth" what someone is willing to pay for them, so the PGA value guide is pure rubbish when it comes to valuations of used goods. Go to a big box store and look at the mark-up on their used items, most of it is in garbage shape but priced horribly high, much higher than the Bay.

Problem is, on the BST you'll be fielding sub-800 offers for the same set, and incredibly lucky to get close to 900, shipping not included.

I think a lot of the state of the current golf economy and federal monetary policy has a lot to do with it along with how long most people have been here on this site.

Golf has seen quite a boom where I live and expect several other places have seen the same. So the demand for previous owned equipment is high. So much higher that us long timers haven’t adjusted our values for years prior.

Drivers really seem to be commanding a higher premium than years past. Years past you could get last years driver head that was hardly used for $200 or less. Now a beat up one is $220 plus.

I’ve been looking for a particular model but every time one pops up it’s gone with a few minutes for way more than I am used to paying. We will see if this is the new norm or not??‍♂️

Just posting to confirm trend. I always preferred the BST -- generally a better experience with a more "advanced" clientele, less likely to complain about the transaction. But my last two times out, I had stuff I couldn't sell on the BST that I was able to turn on Ebay for between 10% and 30% more than what I was asking on BST.

I sell a lot on Ebay. Due to the sheer volume of people, I get the occasional issue, but I do cancel any sale if a buyer starts asking crazy questions. I probably lose some solid sales, but I have found that people that can't understand something simple are usually ones that file claims. The BST has almost 100% good transaction rate for me, but less users and people offering 50% of asking price become a challenge. It is also disappointing that certain items can't be sold here while others can obviously flipped here for double MSRP. The spirit of what this place used to be is gone, so I've taken the approach that selling on ebay is much less personal so I'll stick with the bulk of my sales being there.
