I’m done with my 3 wood

Have you considered shortening it a little bit? I struggled with fairway woods for a long time until I finally just went in and had 1/2" taken off it. It doesn't sound like much, but I have been hitting it way better ever since!

Love my 3 wood. I use it to chip out from under trees and best of all ... it fills out my head covers. Looks really good in the bag.

Well, to support the OP's initial choice, that may not be the wrong decision. At least for now.

The 3w is just a hard club to hit for many players. It's long, it has a relatively small face. Sorta like the 3i.

Some players develop two driver swings - full and less-than-full for those times where a full driver swing would go too far. They find the driver's big face is easier to reliably hit off the tee than the 3w, and they just go with whatever is next longest, yet decently reliable club for shots off the fairway (5w, 7w, hybrid, etc...). They forego the 3w altogether. Not a bad choice at all.

If you ultimately want to keep the 3w, that's fine too, but it may involve what others have suggested above - lessons and possibly some club tweaking. But I wouldn't hold out much hope that tweaking alone will cure this.

I abandoned both my 3w and 5w about 5 years ago. Wasn't hitting either of them well, so I replaced them with a 2i and 3i.

There are times I miss having the 3w because I don't reach many par 5's in two shots anymore. But the 2i does come in handy for some situations. Only downside to the 2i is I can't hit it reliably off the deck. I have to tee it up.

Last week I had my first golf lesson in years, and with some of the new swing changes I might be re-thinking the club configuration myself.

Put it in the extra golf bag in the garage! Give it a timeout. Honestly, if it costs you strokes, bench it.

3 wood is a hard club for most.

Usually, when you find one you like, it stays in the bag forever.

I heard a guy years ago at the Nike Tour say " At night, I sleep with my putter & 3 wood, where I can see them from my bed".

He didn't let those out if his sight.

Go somewhere that has a big selection of shafts, and try them all in your 3 wood

Yes sir.

Currently have both a TM M1 3W-HL (17) and a Cobra King LTD 4/5W (17.5) cranked down to 15* and 16*, respectively, and both -1/2" length (also did the same with Driver). Play my current 5W at -1/8" shorter than those 2 as well.

Probably the best I've hit fairway woods in a long time; seemed to eliminate some of the wipe and allowed me to stay on top of it a little more for my own swing

I was about to dump mine and read a great Golf Digest tip about how to position it. Really has made a difference this year both from tee and fairway. Instead, I dumped the mini driver https://www.golfdigest.com/story/one-common-mistake-amateurs-make-with-a-3-wood?mbid=nl_121919_daily_tipoftheday

I was using a M1 HL with Aldila graphene green proto 80tx shaft at 42.5” in the lowest setting and the flattest lie for a bit. Still have it. I was so inconsistent with it in that setting it was useless. I took it to the range and messed with it one night. My miss is a hook. I put it in the upright setting just to see how it would turn out. Wow. So much better. No left miss, way better contact as well.

i just find it a low spin beast though.

just put a TS3 15* in the bag, with the stock even flow white 6.0 75g in it. Set to standard loft as .75 upright. Man this thing is good!

I think the softer shaft is a good thing for me. Little more spin on the ball gives it more stability. I don’t need a 3w that goes the same distance as my driver.

I swing the driver at 120-122 mph. The softer shaft seems to be helping me. Maybe try that ?

Probably wise for most golfers but its such a fun club. And you have a fall back when driver are not working. 460CC drivers what is the challenge? Mine is 330 and still huge. And when you nail a 3wood it goes nearly as far and love the feel of my orlimar. But when it goes wrong and you still hit it well its a disaster and lost ball :)
