Calamity Jane, Bill Melhorn Style

Hi guys,

Does anyone know of any manufacturers that make modern putters in the similar style to the real old school putters like Bobby Jones, Walter Hagens or Bill Melhorn styles.

The only one I’ve been able to find is the Kronos D’arcy. Its a bit difficult to find the correct words for a search, I mostly just get either hickory putters or vintage ones.

Out of curiosity, what is wrong with hickory? Louisville Golf makes their Calamity Jane model, and yes it is hickory shafted, but that hardly means its bad...

...But it isn't exactly orthodox either, so short of seeing if they'll shaft one for you in steel I'm not sure what to say.

Because I have looked, I have searched, and I have not found anything besides the D'Arcy and the Louisville, so I'm 'resigned' to playing vintage. Which is fine, it means my putter cost 10 bucks and I love it and have been using it for over 4 years now. And to think at the time I was annoyed because 10 felt too high.

I would recommend finding a vintage model you like, and sending it out to a refinishing shop to make it insanely nice. And you could do that 8 times and still not hit d'arcy status.

No problem with Hickory per se, I actually love them, however many of the hickory clubs don’t conform to USGA rules because they technically have two different angled hitting surfaces where the D’arcy Konformist checks that box.

Of all the ridiculousness I have ever heard from the Ruling bodies, a rule change that eliminates one of the most common putter designs of the hickory era, one that is the evolution of the forged blade iron into putter loft, is the greatest travesty I've come to know.

I see it, but I don't believe it. I read it and still can't believe it. I would hope my putter is conforming as it's rear face is not "flat" but who knows. If the Cleveland smart square stubby is conforming, or the VPN5, and Bobby Jones'/Locke's are not...

Anyway Id be tempted to buy a Louisville golf one and ask a machinist to score some 'conformance lines' into it.

It's pretty sad honestly. Some of the best putters ever used that type, and I don't remember them ever flipping their prized putters around for any type of shot.

It'ts also a travesty that these types of blade putters as well as the 8802 style have fallen completely out of favor simply because "the greens are faster now" and they require a "wristy putting stroke".

Jackie Burke Jr. used the same style putter forever even still giving lessons on "fast" greens with the same putter; and Jack has putted with a "wristy" stroke forever!

Cleveland Design CCM 5 1905? This was made a while back but is a modern take on the famous putter.

Yeah that’s a pretty one. I actually game a Yamada Razor very similar shape to that.

I just really like the flat back butter knife shape.

Less than 30 bucks if I recall. New grip yesterday. Ridiculously smooth feel, great sound. Daily player.
