Keep old clubs?

If you don’t see the need for a backup set, I think giving them away is a great idea... ive kept my old irons, but they are old.

I would hang on them for awhile, just in case you get buyer's regret.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

I keep my old irons if I liked them, until the new ones have convinced me of their loyalty.

Right now I have 2 sets of "newer" irons: New CObra Forged Tec's and Cobra Forged Tec Black's. Same shafts in both sets

The newer Forged Tec haven't convinced my they are the ones yet, and the only reason I have them really, is that I liquidated a bunch of my dad's newer clubs after his passing while they were still valuable.

Trying to thin out even more.

Putters, on the other hand, I almost never get rid of, but I'm seeking therapy for that.

I keep old clubs to do a lot of my range work - it might be OCD but I hate the idea of wearing out new grooves with range balls so I'll bring an old 56' and 5 / 6 iron and do most of my technique work with them. I make sure the new & old clubs are spec'd out the same with same shaft, swing weight and lies.

I'm having the same issue, I upgraded my irons in the off season, and upgraded again just last week. I'm holding onto them for now but I'm seriously considering donating them. My really old set I'm going to hold onto for sentimental reasons, and because I doubt a set of 40~ year old Wilson K-28 blades.

If you’re sure you like the new set, and don’t have the need for a travel set or something to stash in your office or at your in-laws, no reason to keep them!

A couple of situations here.

Starting in 1974, I played MacGregor MT irons (and later the woods) until 1994. When I got fitted for new clubs, the clubsmith said he would give me $60 overall on trade-in. OR, I could put them in a period bag and have a historically interesting set of matched clubs to show younger golfers. I did this, and I'm glad I did.

As far as play-ready sets, I have my WITB mix (below) and a backup set of TaylorMades, based off SLDR irons and a Burner Superfast driver. Anyone showing up from out of town without clubs can use them.

Also I have accumulated:

Cleveland CG14 wedges, one each of the lofts from 46* to 64*. A mix of both stock TRAction and lighter shafts. Beginners can hit them on the range and see how different loft mixes shake out for setting up a wedge matrix. (I got several wedges for about $50 each shortly after the new grooves rules took effect in 2010.)Callaway Great Big Bertha Hawkeye fairway woods: 3, 5, 7, 9, plus the Deuce (2 wood). This 1999 model had the tungsten weight screw in the sole to enhance launch. Had the HST Hawkeye Ultralite shaft (60 grams). I found them a few years back in used club bins, all are in excellent shape. Have been meaning to sub-in a couple to my current bag, see how things fly.I have a couple of other "bag" sets I've accumulated, though none as dynamic as the MacGregor MTs. Will probably sell off person-to-person, not enough profit potential with shipping costs for eBay sales.

As for other clubs, I give to the club's First Tee director so he can get credits toward child golf sets.

For long clubs, you might find a high school golfer from non-country club family that needs an FW or hybrid.

I never get rid of the old set until the honeymoon period is over with the new set and I know for sure the new set is a keeper.

I sold a set one time before my new ones came in and I ended up not playing as well with the new set and always regretted selling my old set.

I have three sets right now and the funny thing is I am thinking of selling my newest set.

I buy very little now.

I sell even less.

The resale value just makes it not worth it.

Plus, I'm picky. There's usually a reason why I like specific club.

4 Drivers .... Use 1.

4 Fairways .... Use 0. (LOL)

6 Hybrids .... Use 2 or 3.

4 1/2 Iron Sets .... Use 2 1/2.

9 Wedges .... Use 3 or 4.

3 Putters .... Use 0. (LOL)

I have a small "collection". I like Clubs. But to answer the question, I don't much sell anything anymore.

I sell them and don’t look back. Sure I’ve sold some clubs that I regret now, but those are putters. Irons, wedges, hybrids, fairways woods and drivers are always replaced by something better: sell the old stuff while it’s worth something is my motto ;)

Some old clubs in one of the many bags. Just slapping some balls around trying to have fun.
