2020 Workday Charity Open

The historic Workday Charity Open will be played this week. A venerable championship worthy of the moniker" Fifth Major" will take place at Muirfield Village to replace the cancelled John Deere Classic. It will be followed by the Memorial Tournament at he same course next week. As far as I know, this will be the first time two PGA Tour events will take place at the same course in back to back weeks since the All-American Open and World Championship of Golf were contested at the Tam O'Shanter CC in Chicago, IL from 1949-1957.

FedEX Cup points: 500

Purse: same as the John Deere, $6,200,000 with $1,116,000 going to the winner

OWGR projected first place points of 62, way better than the John Deere's 24 last year

No Tiger, Rory, DJ or Bryson, but a much better field than I would have guessed a month ago.

Course: Muirfield Village a par 72 of normally 7392 yards, but expect that to be shortened this week. I would expect to see the tees up on holes such as #11 and #14 to cut down on divots for next week. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, it will be closed after the Memorial for one last redesign by Jack.

Also returning this week is the European Tour with the Austrian Open.

We are probably looking at a surprise winner (very possibly first-time winner) this week. No big name jumps out.

Who normally posts the odds? If you could, curious to know what are the odds of someone going back-to-back at the same course in back-to-back weeks?

Justin Thomas is my pick. No real reason. Brandt Snedeker is my dark-horse.

Bones Mackay is also back this week, caddying for Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick's usual caddie, Billy Foster (looped for Seve and Westwood) opted to stay at home rather than travel to the US.

No Bryson this week? What on earth will the commentators talk about? Seemingly, he hits it a long way and likes protein.

One week of Bryson drinking Jack's milkshakes is dangerous. I can't imagine what two weeks would lead to.

Anyone heard anything from Tiger?

This is one of my favorite courses in the world. I'd have a hard time choosing between playing this and Augusta/Pine Valley... call me stupid but is what it is. Anyway, I couldn't be happier that we get 2 weeks in a row on this course. Maybe I'll finally be able to get through an entire tournament.

Wonder how Rahm would perform if he had Foster on his bag?

Surely he will tee it up next week if he is not there this. If he doesn’t, the worry would be that something is going on!!

Is there any discussion on how courses will setup between this week and next week?

I would guess that having no fans now helps the odds he will show up for The Memorial.

He'll either commit or call Jack and say he isn't coming. If he doesn't show up, then the PGA would be the next chance he would play and the possibility that Tiger won't return until all this is over (2021 or longer) is suddenly in play.

We'll know something by 5 pm EDT Friday.

It will be interesting to see if the leaderboards look vastly different with the different setups. Also having different tees so there aren't too many divots in the one place. They'll probably keep an eye on the wind before deciding where to put the markers. Although I agree with Nicklaus that you shouldn't be penalised for being in the fairway.

Looking forward to seeing a cumulative leaderboard that you know they are going to produce once we get into the second week. A 144 hole event. I definitely have some interest in seeing how that shapes up.

The story behind the last time the PGA Tour played back-to-back weeks at Firestone

Think you may have been mistaken about the PGA TOUR playing back to back events at the same venue, this article says otherwise.

In 1976 the American Golf Classic was played on the North Course at Firestone while the World Series of Golf was played on the South Course.

Golf sure does have a simple way to make a golf course be different in 2 consecutive weekends ....................... Just let the rough grow.
