How far does the ball need to travel for this to work? Can they be used in backyard hitting nets effectively?

From my understanding (and I could be wrong), Mevo needs about 11ft to accurately measure spin rates. Everything else that it captures really doesn't need any space/room as it gets all the info pretty much at impact.

From my research, the metallic dots are not needed to accurately measure spin on driving range balls. They are typically only used for indoor usage.

Quick note to help anyone considering the mevo. I bought one and used it for 3-5 hours over 2 days. I have the HAACK net in my backyard. The mevo picked up nearly all my shots, but I started to notice my numbers being very off (on the short side). I can't be much more than 7 feet from my net so I am confident the mevo need more ball carry than that. Otherwise, I loved the interface(app) and I could see where it could be super useful.

I would not hesitate to pick another up if my practice area changes.

I have the same unit and used it from time to time outdoors at range. No you don't need metallic dot on range balls. It's only needed for indoor when you are hitting into a net. I know some people have also had success using metallic marker and just draw on the ball.

I got mine used and interestingly previous owner included a small tripod. It only raises the unit about 2 inches off the ground and I found it actually catches the shots much better on grass range. I never did compare if or how much this added height affect the results but I am not looking for that level of accuracy.
