The hat cleaners on eBay that you throw in the dishwasher, are they worth it? I sweat a lot and my hats show it.

I just cleaned several yesterday. I scrubbed the bills with stain remover gel and let them sit about 5 mins then soaked them in the sink with oxy clean and warm water. Scrubbed stubborn spots with a soft dish brush in the oxy clean, then rinse and air dry. They came out great.

I use the frame-type cleaner and throw my hats in the washing machine on top of my clothes and it works very well. it certainly gets the sweat smells out

I’ll sometimes put a few shots of Shout on them, especially white ones. If you like strongly formed cap fronts (baseball-type instead of slouchy dad hats), they can get a little crinkled/crushed, but worth it a little to me.

(Haven’t used the top shelf of dishwasher)

My wife was a bit upset when I tried to do this. Let us know if it works. I’m also tired of washing by hand.

Yeah it sucks because it’s 11.95 and have about 6 hats and I only clean dishes maybe once every 2 weeks.

    This^^^

I have a hat cleaner my wife bought for me. I never liked it. I always wash mine by hand just like the above poster.

I recently found one of my old favorite tan Cobra hats with sweat stains 1 inch around the head band. It took me three times. Stain remover gel,oxy clean bath, oxy clean scrub with brush and repeat three times. Now it looks brand new once again. I then air dry it over a tupperware bowl to retain it's natural shape.

I've used the top rack of the dishwasher (w/o dishes) both with and w/o a hat rack.

If you don’t mind deformed or faded hats then use the dishwasher or washing machine.

The best way I have found is to soak them in warm water with woolite dark detergent immediately after getting home from the course. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then spin it around the sink for a minute or so. Then drain the sink, fill with warm water again and spin for a minute, and your hat is effectively rinsed. If you have done this since day one, you will never have to scrub and it will still look new after dozens of washes. If you have some old hats with set in stains, spray them with shout stain remover and follow the process above but increase the time in each interval and wipe the stains with a clean cloth, then soak again. It’s not as easy but your hat will retain its shape and color exponentially longer than a dishwasher or washing machine.

Simple Green and water pre-soak in a sink for 1 hr then rinse thoroughly and hang to dry.

I've had good luck with the dishwasher rack. Spray with Shout or OxiClean or something and throw in in there.

A little bit of tide in the sink with some cool water and a soft bristled nylon brush is what I have done for years. Takes a little more effort but it keeps everything looking and smelling good.

I wash any hats that need to be washed with shampoo while I'm in the shower. Give them a good scrubbing then hang dry. This works great when on vacation, too. Wash the hat at night and hang dry. It will be clean and ready to go in the morning.

Lots of good suggestions for the actual cleaning method (soaking, brushing, dishwasher). I've used many of them and they mostly work fine for me. I've even used the gentle cycle of my front-loading washing machine.

I'll pitch in a tip to help the drying process: find a roughly head shaped object to place the cap on while it's drying. I have a couple of kitchen mixing bowls that fit that description, I know others who have used a kid's playground ball. Maybe even a balloon. Pad it out with paper or cloth towels to fill in areas under the cap that aren't fully supported by the drying form. This way the cap will dry in the correct shape and not take on odd wrinkles.

That's weird. I've used the top rack of the dishwasher for 30 years. Never had a problem.

Unstructured dad hats? Sure, but probably faded. Structured, likely faded and crinkled crown.

I don't have any unstructured dad hats. Since many people use the top rack of a a dishwasher with good results we'll just have to agree to disagree. You keep on doin' it your way and I'll keep on doin' it mine. As anal as I am about hats I'll guarantee you that if I had poor results I wouldn't do it.

All my hats and visors go in the washing machine. Not the dryer. Reshape when done. Set out to dry. Never had one yet that got bent outa shape or ruined.

If your hat is fresh (meaning still slightly damp from sweat) you can spray the hat with downy wrinkle release and the sweat won't stain the hat. It's weird, but works.

i have several white hats that i wear to golf in. As soon as I get home you can see the sweat on the hat. Spray the inside and outside of the hat with the wrinkle release and bam. Good to go tomorrow and smell good too.
