Does playing irons with a lower vcog help thin strikes?

According to the Maltby iron head data my p760 have a vcog of about .863. I see 718 AP2 and T100 are all under .8 and I think the 718 was actually about .76 which seems very low.

My miss tends to be a bit thin and I'm a fairly shallow player so those kinds of misses can really tank my spin and cause me to fly greens or land on the front and roll off the back.

That seems a little backwards though as thin strikes normally spin up, not down. Unless we're talking about near knifes, and no vcog is placement is going to help with that.

I think it's maybe more from launch and peak height going down as opposed to spin tanking? In my 2nd to last round I juiced a 9i like 165 or so and I barely caught it thin... Didn't really take divot but it wasn't a thin bullet. I expected to see my ball land on the back of the green or fringe, but I watched it sail right over the back into a Forrest. I expected my normal 145-150 carry to the flag that was about 145 on my GPS. It didn't feel crazy hot or knifey...

Launch and peak height shouldn't go down either. Nothing about a slightly thin strike with an iron should produce a "flier" like you're describing. Ball speed does not increase, spin does not decrease, and launch/peak height wouldn't change in a way to create that kind of shot. Any time I have ever caught a shot with a scoring club a groove or two low that needed to go its full distance, it comes up about 5-7 yards short and spins back harder. It is more likely that your GPS was off for some reason.

I was right next to the 150yard marker on the course. Even if I had 140... I sailed the green. I've had times where I hit it 10/10 and I gain a few yards over normal since I'm rarely catching it out of the screws but I was just a bit confused on how that was my end result.

But if we pretend the GPS was wrong .. I guess my question still stands, would more mass lower in the club help keep launch a bit higher when you strike the ball low? It should, shouldn't it?

But yes, although just think about it as the sweet spot moving down, as that is exactly what is happening. Pros these days typically want an iron with a little more spin (higher CG) given how the modern ball performs, and very low CG is more popular with driving irons to more easily give you higher launch/lower spin launch conditions and make hitting from the turf a little easier.

The problem is that I don't see how this solves your problem in this case. If you're striking it a little thin, a lower CG iron is just going to make that strike a little more efficient with more ball speed and a higher launch, which = further. Typically low CG is good for sweeper/pickers for this reason.

All things equal it should launch higher but it sounds like there is something else going on to cause that kind of miss. Are you a slower swing speed player? I can see a mishit with slower swing speed being unable to hold the green because even though the spin may actually increase it's not enough to counter act the shallow angle of decent that you get from low launch and speed.

The only times I have seen the dreaded iron shot flying a green(whether it is thin of solid really does not matter unless it is a bladed shot, which is another story) is when the grooves are not 100% clean.

There is no dreaded hot spot, or any such drivel. Today's iron grooves are mandated to where if you get anything in between the ball and the face the ball comes out with less spin. Why I typically see it happen is a player who is borderline a low spin player goes to a slotted iron that is designed for less spin (then they have some dirt in their iron or hit from a thicker fairway or when dew is on the ground or out of the rough) and look up to see the ball that may look fine have less spin and fly the green.

Unfortunately these hollow irons (almost all of them) produce lower spin than their solid counter parts and not everyone can play these type of irons. I am a super high spin player and religious about cleaning my grooves so I have and can play all of them. Unfortunately the fittings done off of a mat where you have no chance to see how they perform from anywhere but a perfect lie, and players are chasing longer iron shots, you get longer by reducing loft and lowering spin in your design.

Try with some added head and or shaft weight, both using lead tape.

A shallow AOA is swing related, and related to ball position (maybe too far forward), but thin shots can be prevented by adding total weight, and like always, added weight on the heads makes the largest influence, second is on the shaft, 3 is grip side. As long as total weight goes up, the club will be pulled deeper against the ground. Only a few grams added to the heads can make a difference, so with 5 grams shaft weight, it all depends on your tolerances and where that club is now.

I hit a fair amount of thin shots, and find a thin 9 iron to be where distance is about the same as a full shot.

Thin wedges will go longer, and longer irons hit thin will go shorter.

Already have about 3g lead tape on all my irons to bring SW up to D3 or so, but I'm in the process of adding shaft weight. My swing has been changing a touch and I'm moving into x100s from modus 120. I only have the x100 in my 7i right now and it's producing good results.

Def also guilty of letting ball creep forward so I'll need to be more mindful of that on course.
