Background on HZRDUS T800 variations

I've been trying to learn more about the components of my clubs lately and I just noticed something that I hadn't before. I was hunting for a 2016 9.5* M2 and found a cherry one. I didn't think about the shaft or anything - I was told it was "Regular+" flex, so I was fine with it. It's been a beast for me - added reach and tightened up my dispersion significantly.

So in my pursuit of learning more about what makes up a club, I started looking into the shaft that came on my M2. It's a Project X HZRDUS T800 65g.

When I did some searches on it, I found a lot on something close, but not quite the same as my shaft. It seems like there is a T800 shaft that is 55g and has green outlined letters. It seems to have been the stock shaft for a certain model or two of Callaway drivers.

The one I have has solid blue letters and is 65g. This one does not seem to be the one that the Callaway drivers shipped with.

Anyone know the story behind these? Especially the blue one I have? Is it some co-branded thing with TaylorMade? Are there any differences between the two (besides the weight)? Anyone else gaming the blue one? What's been your experience with it?

The Blue variant was just an alternate paint job and can be found in both weights. The T800 was a stock shaft offering meant to resemble its big brother, the T1100, which is an extremely stout shaft. The gunmetal/green version was more common as it resembled the T1100.

Was the blue one tied to Callaway or another maker or just general? The green one was definitely the Callaway one, correct?

Both cosmetic versions of the T800 were a main stock Callaway offering, yes. They were still available in other brands, but you'll find them in/connected to Callaway most often.

The silver/blue graphic T800 pictured above was the stock offering in the European Callaway XR Speed. The DSG exclusive XR Speed (no head weight) had graphics that was predominantly black with blue outlined hzrdus text. Both of these were the same shaft as the original offering that was stock in the GBB Epic.

Additionally there was another version for the laddies offering.

It should be noted that the 800 shared very little with the 1100 other than the paint job. The 800 takes a piece of the technology used in the 1100 and is then built into an amateur friendly profile whereas the 1100 was designed for some of the hardest swings desiring low/low spin launch.

I came across that and was glad to hear it. I suppose if it was like the T1100 I would’ve noticed before I noticed... But the one I have doesn’t even share the same paint job, so that’s part of what got me curious.

Callaway has been doing this for years. Of course they are not the only brand, but the most apparent one. Take a shaft that has been seen on tour and is recognizable, take a completely different shaft and paint it up with almost identical graphics except change the T1100 to T800 or the Fujikura 661 Speeder to a 665.

Honestly in most cases the shaft they use is probably better for most recreational golfers especially with something like the T1100 but still misleading.

So which of the “non-derivative” HZRDUS shafts have the same attributes as the T800? I heard the black is quite a bit stiffer. Does the yellow/yellow smoke match the T800?

I would say it's probably more like the red or something in the Evenflow line assuming you match up the weight.

None of them. The T800 was not only lighter (HZRDUS Black Smoke comes close in weight), but noticeably softer than the actual aftermarket line (T1100, Black, Red, Yellow). The smoke models have become the OEM offering of this line, but they are also significantly stiffer than the T800.

I ended up with a busted T800 shaft on my Callaway GBB Epic driver.  It has been a bear trying to find a replacement quickly.  I really don't want to change anything this late in the season.

It seems most fitting shops need to order replacement shafts.  PGA Superstore has these shafts in stock, but only sell them as mix and match with certain driver heads.  

Any suggestions?   I have dug into Callaway Preowned, Amazon, and other sites.   No perfect match for 6.0 55g T800.
