Can you CARRY a driver 300 off a half inch tee?

Context, my idea to make pro golf more entertaining is to limit tee size, which would mean smaller club faces and more controlled swings. You wouldn’t be able to crash it over the top of all the trouble which, so the argument goes, makes the older classic tests of golf redundant.

so, keeping it non political, I just want to ask the long drive experts here.. optimise the CoG on a small headed driver, half inch tee.. what swing speeds would you need to hit that 300 carry.. significantly different to the tee it high let it fly 460cc swing speed? I know there’s a lot of subtleties I’m missing here..

Most pros aren’t maxxing their distance... they have angles of attack of 0 or negative... they’d be fine on half inch tees for the most part... they could just loft up, if needed.

You give somebody like Bryson or DJ a 12* power 3-wood and they'll be just fine carrying that over 300. Pretty sure Phil used to play one of those driving 3-woods instead of a driver for a while and was still hitting it deep.

I carried my driver 562 2 days ago. Struck it 245 down the middle then placed my bag beside the green at 562. 😥

Def doable ala John Daly and Tiger back in their prime.  They had the ability to swing 130 mph.

Didn't VJ hit driver off the deck like 280 all the time on the range?  Hit so many balls he had to figure out what to work on next...  Simply put, yes, the long guys could do it without much issue.  We have guys going up in loft for gapping purposes because the new stuff goes so far now.

This.

Tech has come far enough that if you mandate a half inch tee they’ll just adjust the head shapes and shaft setups for them to launch like a driver.   Maybe they give up a child’s portion of distance but with some tuning that could be overcome too.

why don’t we just accept some people can hit the shat out of the golf ball, let them do it and move on?

Why?

Because you still have to putt..

DL3 used to hit drivers off the deck routinely and exhibited minimal loss in distance - it’s actually a great drill to flatten your swing out because, well, you can’t really be steep when you’re hitting driver off the deck..

I’m sure it can be done.  This is a slight mishit off the deck with the 300 mini 13.5 at 43 inches.

if this rain ever stops I’ll see if I can get some off the tee data.  An 11.5 mini head at 44 inches would no doubt be faster still.

Back in the 70;s through 90's I was long. really, really long. It wasn't till the first "oversized" drivers, like Yonex Adx and Wilson Whale Titanium that I could regularly carry the ball 300, and there was no way to hit those teed less than 1". Those heads are now considered small. LOL

These days, at 62, with modern balls and clubs, last season I carried a couple drives over 300 on flat land in a calm wind. My swing speed certainly isn't anywhere near as fast as it used to be. Just the fact that I can still get a  long drive once in a while is amazing. If only I knew what I did besides feel good that day.LOL

should be possible, i've hit my driver off the deck from the fairway for 280 yards.

If you play with a higher lofted driver from a lower tee you can still make a good distance. For example, 7* driver on a 4 inch tee, or a 10.5* driver from a half to 1 inch tee. It depends on the launch condition you can achieve at the right ball speed.
