Help with early extension/forward shaft lean

Recommended Posts

My swing likely has many issues but the one I’ve been trying to fix is my early extension leading to a lack of forward shaft lean at impact. I can’t for the life of me take a divot that starts at the ball (always starts before). I’ve watched about 100 videos on YouTube and tried many drills but can’t seem to fix it. I can get a semi-consistent contact with my early extension but my ball flight is typically very high and lacking distance. Any suggestions? Also feel free to point out anything else in my swing I should work on. Below are two slow-mo video from face on (sorry no down the line shots). thanks in advance for the help

Keep your weight forward. 60/40 to start, 50/50 in your backswing. You load way too far back which causes your swaying. As Eagon said, your sequencing doesn't look great, stop looking up. You literally start your swing while moving your head to look back down at the ball, going to be tough to get consistent with that being your leading move.

Thanks for the help. I see that I am swaying but I am having a hard time correcting it. I feel like if I tell myself "don't let your hips sway" then I end up getting no rotation with them at all and tend to use my arms 100%. Also, what do you mean when you say that I load too far back? Does that mean I'm putting too much of my weight on my back foot (right foot) in the beginning of my backswing?

Yes, you're putting too much weight on your back leg/foot during your backswing and it's causing your knees to buckle and changes your swing path. You'll notice your head dips as well. Try widening your stance, let your feet flair out and just get your base more stable & set (almost like you're setting up for a driver swing). Get the feel for how much more stable your lower body is after a few swings like that and slowly start closing your stance back to normal.

Yes thank you. I definitely see that I’m leaning and not pivoting with my upper body, which is all contributing to my sway. I’ve been trying to correct it by keeping my lower body still during my backswing. I think I’ll try Braxton’s idea of taking a wider stance and flairing my feet to anchor my lower body and force myself to rotate.

You need to allow your right hip to turn deep behind you. Try this. Set-up in front of a mirror with a hair of spine tilt away from the target and a slightly wider stance. Put the club down and cross your arms over your chest. Rotate your torso with the idea that your left shoulder is going down towards your right toe. This will feel mega tight and restrictive. Your right hip needs to be allowed to turn deep behind you while you do this.

Repeat this hundreds of times.

I went to the range today and tried out some of the exercises. I think I’m swaying slightly less but, to be honest, it doesn’t feel smooth or natural. Hopefully I’m at least on the right track. Below are very poorly filmed videos (Sorry I was alone). I noticed that my natural 3 wood shot (in the second video) had much less sway then any of my shots with the irons. I use my 3 wood off the tees because I can’t hit my driver to save my life.

Keeping your lower body “still” is not going to help you. It will only restrict you. You need to flex your left knee over your left big toe and feel your right shoulder blade face the target. The right hip should feel like it’s replacing the space occupied by your tailbone at address.

This is going to feel crazy and like you are leaning massively towards your front side. But video it and look at what the reality is.

Good Luck

I'm no instructor but you have no hip turn on the backswing.   As a drill....try starting the swing with your hips and hitting the ball with your hips.  Your left hip should work down and toward the ball as the right hip works up and away from the ball.  The hips don't turn flat because your spine is tipped forward and you are supposed to turn around the tilted angle of the spine.  On the way down the left hip works back up and the right hip back down.  This will get your hips moving in the backswing.  You can't hit the ball with your hips if they don't turn in the backswing.

Your casting is due to your subconscious mind being aware that your clubface will be open at impact, given your current conscious concept of how to compress a golf ball and direct it to a given target. It's a compensation move. Commonly due to, either/and/or;

a/ Wrong grip for your particular release pattern (everyone's is difference - hence every grip imaginable found on Tour). - You have a weak grip, which may or may not be correct for you.

b/ You're an 'inside-over' player (see Bobby Jones, Sam Snead etc) and your backswing is not inside enough. - Experiment with different backswing planes.

c/ Your backswing is too long to allow synchronisation of your arms with your turn. - Try practising 'arms-parallel' drill.

Good luck. Enjoy the experimentation!

Something my instructor told me to do: Assume my stance, indoors, no club, facing a wall with your arms crossed across your chest. Put my forehead against the wall. (you can also do it the other way around with your butt against the wall.)

Practice taking slo motion swings making sure your forehead (or your butt) rolls against the wall, no sliding, no up and down.

He then had me take a club , no ball, and take slo motion swings. While maintaining a straight lead arm. Trying to get my lead shoulder under my chin while keeping that arm straight.

Both forced my hips to move. It made me feel what a hip turn is versus a sway or arm only move.

His thoughts: using a ball has you concentrating on the ball flight result, not what you are trying to achieve; unnecessary body movement .

This year, with no driving range option due to covid, I only practice without a ball. HCP has come down some and I've shot my lowest scores.

I prefer to have lower scores rather than try to have a swing that looks good to others.

Thanks for the feedback.  I will experiment with a stronger grip and different swing planes. I have a few questions and forgive me because I don't know terminology that well.

1. Does "inside-over" mean that during my takeaway, I'm bringing my club too much inside/low? And during my downswing, I'm taking too steep on an angle? Should I exaggerate this even more or try to level things out?  It seems like when I try to have a more "straight" backswing and downswing, I end up feeling like a robot and using my arms exclusively.

2. In regards to the "too long of a back swing" and "arms-parallel" drill. Should I stop my backswing roughly at the moment I've screen shotted below and try to bend my wrists more to achieve a smaller (more acute) "shaft-arm" angle?

It seems like my ball flight is pretty consistently a straight-draw or pull.  I don't really know what that means in regard to my swing path or aim or clubface though.

Looks like your face is wide open at shaft parallel on backswing and downswing. I attached a screen shot showing this (red line is what it is, blue is what it should be).

Check out out this swing analysis of Victor Hovland. My help with some face control.

Edit: Just read through some of the other posts. You said you tried a stronger grip yet it looks weaker than your earlier videos. Make sure your club face is square to target then take your grip. Also, just in case you weren't aware, stronger grip doesn't mean the force with which you hold the club. It is how much your hands are rotated on the club grip. For a right handed golfer, stronger equals more rotated right and weaker means more rotated left.

@Habitual FlipperThank you - I always thought that my clubface should be directly vertical when parallel in the backswing and downswing. That video you shared was very eye opening (especially when I play my video side-by-side). My impact position and follow through also looks very different but I can seem to tell what I’m doing wrong. The pro’s shoulder line is more perpendicular to the ground whereas mine is more or less on the same plane as my swing. Any advice to address this?

That's because you're comparing yourself to Victor Hovland lol. Trust me, mine is also very different.

A good checkpoint for your face angle is that it should match your spine angle when shaft is at parallel to the ground in both backswing and downswing (see how the blue line is parallel with your spine above?) This will change a bit depending on club, since you will be standing a bit more upright with a driver vs a sand wedge.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean about your shoulder line. I honestly wouldn't change much for now other than your face angle when looking at that swing number 7. Try a bunch of slow ones paying close attention to face angle at those checkpoints mentioned above and also at impact (actually stop at each check point and make sure it is in the correct position).

@Habitual Flipper thank you - thank makes sense and I will practice it on the range shortly. Is it better to fix my open face with a stronger grip or most wrist rotation? Or a combination of both?

In regards to my “shoulder line”, I’m mostly referring to my follow through (just after impact). I’ve attached a couple photos to help point out what I’m looking at. Should I try to mimic that “tilt” or is it not really a big concern for the level I’m playing at?

I'm playing a bit of catchup here, but your angle is fine there. Hovland is a pretty extreme example and I would not try to mimic that.

I agree with all the comments about lower body though, and that should be your primary focus in addition to the aforementioned clubface rotation, which is getting too open on the way back. Keep focusing rotating back in to that right hip socket and then leading with what you've loaded up there. Use this Tiger iron swing as a reference:

Notice the movement in the pelvis/hips at 0:10 and how it is basically starting as the club is reaching the top, rotating up in to the left side while the hands just start to fall in behind. That is more the sequence you want to be after, and it all starts with getting properly loaded up in the right hip to start.
