Talked to PGA Tour Pro on putting green today

Hey everyone, I just signed up for this forum but have been reading on here for years.

Thought I would tell a little story about today. I saw a guy putting on the green today in Jupiter, Florida and he had 2 putters, was wearing a shirt with a RBC Heritage logo, and his putting stroke was very (very) pure. My friend and I were pretty sure he was pro so I went up to him as he was packing up and asked if he was a professional golfer, and he said yes. I then said cool, what tour, and he said "The PGA Tour". I was like wow that is awesome whats your name? He turns out to be a rookie, has made over $250k this year. Still probably wont keep his card, since you have to be top 125, and he's not (from what I researched after).

Anyways, the point of my story is I asked him what he thought about stability shafts. He said he has never messed around with his putting shafts but said alot of guys are gaming the oddysey stability shafts. He said Odyssey is really pushing them. First point: He thought stroke lab shafts in odyssey are the same as stability shafts. From what I hear, they are not comparable. Second, I saw he was putting with a Taylormade Tour putter. I was always curious why pros like DJ and Jason Day stopped using the Spider X and are using the Taylormade Tour (The older model) instead. He said "I don't know what a spider X is". This guy is sponsored by Taylormade and literally didn't know the difference between the tour and spider X. I thought it was pretty interesting. Seemed to care more about his game than he does about all this new equipment talk. Food for thought. Curious what you guys think about this.

Did not mention his name because I'll prob see him again on the putting green lol.

Not really too surprising. Lots of good/great players don't pay too much attention to equipment beyond what works. I suspect that if you gave an equipment test to the top 125 pros and the top 125 equipment junkies here on WRX, the WRXer guys would win easily.

Maybe if he worried more about equipment then he'd be top 125...

That right there is the difference in golf being a hobby vs golf being your job.

In the Spider debate, you forgot the part about whether the red tour insert is softer, and too soft, compared to the black insert and whether that matters.

I bet he played dumb because so you stopped asking questions. If he's a TM staffer he's probably putted with the Spider X especially being on tour. Unless this dude literally gets to the course 10min before his tee time and heads to the first tee.

When he said he doesn't know what a spider x is, I showed him mine, and he was like "oh so they're the same shape but the X has the white? I don't like the white."

Some pros couldn’t tell you the first thing about their equipment. Others know every spec down to the last detail. There’s all kinds out there.

Putting Gets Attention tour?

If there's a year to be outside of the top 125 this is the year. No one loses their card this year so this guy will be on the tour for another year.

Stroke lab shafts are wet noodles compared to stability shafts IMO.

Asks him about EQUIPMENT.  womp womp 

Most golfWRX thing ever. 

Doesn't shock me.  You are going to have guys like Bryson DeChambeau and Charles Howell III who are equipment/specs junkies and guys like this pro and others who show up to a fitting and just go along with which setup gives them the best numbers without asking any questions and call it day.   It's kind of similar to police officers and firearms.  Some are very big into firearms and collecting them and others outside of their duty weapon and knowing how to shoot it proficiently don't have an interest in firearms.
