Need a heavy but soft iron shaft

Recommended Posts

Borrowed my Dads G25s today, CFS regular flex. I ran 20 grams of lead tape down the shaft and stuck 10 grams on the head. The whole thing felt awesome, where do I begin my search for 120+ gram soft iron shaft? Did I make the flex softer by putting 10 grams on the head? I don't know the characteristics of the CFS but it was a joy to swing with the tape on it. I'd prefer a cleaner look for my irons but if there's nothing out there with that feel in that weight I guess I'm off to ebay for some G25s and down to the store for a few rolls of tape.

Thanks

I agree with the R300 recommendation.

Regarding swingweight, that will depend on how far you ran the tape down the shaft. Assuming you hit on something fairly neutral in terms of balance point, the 10g of headweight would be the big factor, and you likely went to somewhere around D5, with the caveat being that you also increased the static weight as well. That is an important qualifying factor since a swingweight is meaningless without knowing total weight and balance point. If you try an R300 which is 130g, you may find that you need less headweight (and therefore a lower swingweight) to get the same feel you liked. The very rough guide is that 10g of shaft weight will translate to around one swingweight point of perceived feel change, even if the swingweight does not measure different e.g. a 120g shafted 7-iron @D5 will feel similar to a 130g shaft @D4. This is VERY rough however as we are starting to mix our peas with our porridge in terms of measuring methods, so it is best to go by your feel. Just don't be surprised if adding 10g of headweight with an R300 starts to feel a bit heavy. If you can, measure the total weight of one of the clubs you liked with all the lead tape on it and use that number as a reference a long with swing weight.

Regardless, it sounds like you are preferring something very similar to what I grew to prefer, so please report back when you've tested. ?

Best swings were with the 8 iron, total weight 458 grams. I had tape all along the length of the shaft, from bottom the of grip down to the ferrule in one strip, plus the 10g right in the middle of the cavity. It doesn't feel at all heavy to me, I guess I should experiment with my 8 iron instead of my 7. From what I've been reading tonight these CFS shafts play a bit soft to flex and are 100 grams +/- descending weight. I think I'll grab a DG 120 in an R flex as well as an R300.

There could be more than just the total weight to it as well, the devil/angel on my shoulder has been telling me all night to play another round with these and just go but some standard G25s and tape them up. I don't usually take divots when I play and feel very light on my feet. Today I was finishing my swing solid on my left foot, chest forward with the club high facing my target. I should just buy the Gs.

DG R300 is not going to feel anywhere close to your CFS-R with the extra 20g of weight you added. CFS plays soft to flex, DG R300 has a noticeably higher kick point and the tip is much stiffer. Also, the 10g you added to the club head probably made the CFS feel even softer. You're not going to get that feeling of the club head releasing at impact that the weighted CFS gives you.

Yeah I think theoretically by adding 10g on the head you made the club play softer. By how much, I am not sure... somebody like Stuart G could probably tell you. As far as soft but heavy, you can do R300 as suggested, or really take any shaft in your desired weight range and soft step it a few times. I find a 2x soft step to make quite a difference in feel, especially with short irons.

Just to start you off, here are some shafts for you to look into:

Soft step any of these - X100, S300/400, Modus 120X/TX, KBS $ Taper, KBS C Taper, Project X/LZ

10 gm added to the head is equivalent to soft stepped x ~1.5.

But the 'awesome' feeling could be just a matter of the weight and not the stiffness of the shaft. For most, weight is generally going to be much more important than stiffness. So best to try an R300 (taper tip version, not the single length parallel version) straight in first and adjust head weight until you get the best feel and then see how it feels before worrying about flex or stiffness.

Head weight vs flex is easy to calculate as CPM.

SW value and CPM has a 1:1 relation.

For a standard #7 iron of 37.00", 1 SWP = 2.16 grams

10 grams added head weight / 2.16 for each SWP = 4.62 SWP up and 4.62 CPM down.

The additional weight added to the shafts, here 20 grams, most of it below the shafts balance point makes the same effect, here estimated to about 2.5 - 3 SWP

Sum flex weakening, about 7- 7.5 CPM or in the area of soft stepped 2x from the starting point

Thats strange, my DB say Modus 125 R is stronger than R300, the difference is 10 CPM or a full flex, and we see them same on deflection specs where DG deflects 0.250 more

image.pngI have no specs for PING CFS shafts, who in the used condition would play 7-7.5 CPM softer that starting point (see numbers in my previous post)

The EI profile of CFS looks like Dynamic Gold parallels to me, DG taper has a stiffer tip section and weaker butt, and without the full profile in numbers its hard to say where they actually belongs, but if you have CFS in that S3 DB, please upload those specs for all this models.

There is a difference in the profiles. Parallel is a bit softer. BUT that's not why I made that suggestion. The biggest difference is that the tapers are constant weight while the parallels are descending weight. That means that as the clubs get shorter, the weight gets lighter. And if the heavy weight is as important as it seems to be for you, I don't think you'll want the shorter irons to get lighter.

DG Tapers and DG parallels is 2 different animals.

Tapers is Constant weight, so we get more weight into the short end of the set.

Parallels is Descending weight, starting heavy in the long end and looses weight for each club shorter.

I did not have R300 at hand so this is S300 Parallels, vs Tapers vs AMT, but its 3 grams down all the way from S300 to R300 (tapers and parallels), and this should give a good picture of how a standard set looks like for the 3 different options. ALL before butt cutt who for DG is about 2.25" depending on play length.

image.pngNext difference is flex (butt CPM) and flight pattern. Tapers has a steeper slope vs Parallels, and Parallels (most models on the marked) has a slight BIAS against "flighted", while the tapers remains LOW launch all the way. Butt CPM for a standard set looks like this: The Constant wgt model (tapers) has the softest butt section of the two. Ive been reading about your experience with both more shaft and head weight, and summary, the Taper Constant weight would be the right option here. The classic Dynamic Gold R300 Tapers is a silly good but forgotten shaft since its weight is over and beyond the "main stream trend" of today. The Sensicore version is probably the smoothest and best feeling low launch shaft ever made. (The Sensicore version if you can find them is 124 grams vs 127 on the standard)

Strange....and i have not seen 2 different Modus 125 models either?

My compare aint right either since i forgot that 39.00 is a MODUS #6 iron, while its the #5 for DG, so a DG #6 iron would be plus 10 CPM on my numbers, MINUS 3 for longer BEAM, but the numbers we got still dont match and tells a different story....strange....

Thanks all for the input and info, I tracked down a used sporting goods store and managed to find an old 845 6 iron with an R300 in it. Its my shaft, guess its the weight rather than making the CFS soft. Feels way better than my current clubs. I have Tour 90s in my clubs, a lot of shots I end on my toes, feeling like I'm going to fall on the ball. Nice stable turn with 120 weight. Should have got fit instead of off the rack....
