Practice Aids for Putting

Homemade, cheap or whatever
Next week I'll be moving down to the 1st floor apartment. It has a "double parlor" with the same short wall to wall carpet going from one room to the other. Basically I can get a good 50ft. putt across both rooms. I'm looking for some ideas as to training aids or whatever to work on my putting indoors. I was thinking of some using a strip of masking tape to start, maybe work on 15-20ft. straight to start. It might sound stupid but just looking to get some useful practice.

i sometimes use two tees to line up the putter head, if you are using carpet you can use a couple of books. I also use a little practice putting green that returns the ball. if i want to putt longer than 8 feet i just putt on the carpet onto the green, it rolls good, not nearly the same speed but its a good way to waste time.

My swing coach taught me to get a pre-fabricated shelf from home depot, mount 2 doorstops on it, and adjust the doorstops so that there is a slight angle to the board.. you can rub the heel of the putter on it... it makes a slight inside-out motion (very minimal)... helps alot with muscle memory.

On the putting green use the board in conjunction with a chalk line. Move the board away from the chalk line so your sweet spot is on the line. Then practice with the board slightly further away and practice making a stroke without rubbing the heel of your putter on the board.

Thing took 6 strokes off my game.

saw sergio putting with a glove hanging from his mouth. i can only imagine this is to remind him to keep his head still. seems a good drill and i tried it pretty succesfully this weekend.

Get a 9 or 13 feet tour links .The best investment (400 bucks). Will last you long.

I checked that out. Looks pretty cool but unfortunately thats about 2 1/2 months of my discretionary income. Plus with 2 cats it would most likely get trashed quick.

I'm having a hard time invisioning this contraption. If you have the time to get a pic of it I'd really like to see it. I used one of those putting block deals at a place last year and liked it. Not paying $100 for a block of wood though.

Putting in the house for me, is difficult since the floors have large ceramic tile without a true roll. My bedroom has thick carpet.

I found this putting mat today. I have been practicing 3, 5, and 7 footers (since it was raining hard today):

Unfortunately I am out of commission for a while. I broke my ankle back in july and im stuck away from my apt and at my parents until i can drive. I will remember to post a pic of this later on.

By far the best putting aid I have ever used is a simple chalk line. Only costs about $3 from home depot.

As far as doing something indoor, I would look for a good putting mat. One idea I've been toying with but haven't tried yet would be to buy a strip of aluminum or some other light fairly inflexible metal and mount some good outdoor carpeting to it. I have the pelz truth board, but want something longer, in the 6-9ft range. I was thinking about copying that design for this idea. You could always split it up into 3ft sections with hinges for easy storage. Just a thought.

I recommend a SeeMore Putter -- excellent putter and training aid.

Just buy a chalk line from home depot. It's used by construction people to mark straight lines. Never use red chalk, just the other colors. I had read that the red color can mark the green permanently, but the other colors are safe. Not sure if this is true, but I follow the advice anyway. I typically roll the balls by hand at the hole to find a straight putt. Then use a tee to hold the chalk line down on the opposite side of the hole. I usually mark up to about 15ft to give me a lot of different lengths to work on.

As far as attitudes about marking greens, it shouldn't be an issue. The chalk will wash away with any rain or watering of the greens. If you are unsure, just ask the pros if it is OK.
