Phil Michelsons Putter

is it time for a major change
Everyweek that Phil plays on the PGA tour it seems he shows up with a different copy of the old 8802 If I was him maybe I would get my original out.

I realize that Phil makes the classic swinging door stroke that fits this putter (great for rolling the ball and those 10 to 20 footers)

I have never understood where Pelz falls into this equation considering he is a straight back straight thru guy.

My point is from watching Phils ball striking he should have been a factor in the Cup race. But his putter as usual of late let him down.
Watching him three putt Saturday from six or seven feet stung a bit.

So what do you guys think should Phil try something heel weighted maybe something Ping style or something Mills style but something other than his blade putter.

I am honestly curious about your opinions.

It's really Nothing new With Phil. Considering he used the Palmer Original One in College.

Then the Yonex Graphite shafted one through most of the 1990's He even brought it back out in the 2002 Ryder Cup I believe.

Plus a Bettinardi version..... a TP Mills Version. Let alone the Scotty Calamity Jane looking thing he used at the 1999 US Open.

At least he got away from 4 Putt Phil Status with his failed Futura mess a few years back.

He's always going to tinker and may not always win. He will always make it interesting though... lol He is kind of a Modern day Palmer.....

Slightly off topic but just to share: :)

His failed Futura is going for $7k at Plaza Golf in LA though.

Other putters in the pic (From back to front) Steve Lowery's ($6.5k), Tiger Woods ($50k), Justin Leonard ($7k) and Greg Norman ($6.5k). :man_in_love:

That putter has a 6 o clock toe hang and he strokes SBST. After he is addressed and ready to pull the trigger he makes that little forward press and then strokes it straight back and through. I really think he needs to stop messing with his equipment. He is a club ho on a whole new level...

his putter is way to short. The thing looks like 32". The pelz sbst sucks, it is the most unatural feel. he needs to go to utley and have that putter grow another 3 inches. Pelz has great info but that is it.

The putter is only one symptom of his disease.

Phil's bag changes hourly. How does he expect to get comfortable with his equipment when it goes in and out of the bag. Even with his reputation with the wedges, adding a 64° creates an unfamiliar element in his bag.

The putter is the same. Changing every week does not breed familiarity, which is the basis of confidence.

How long has Tiger's putter been in the bag? Chances of him switching it out anytime soon? None.

You know I wish I had not even started this thread about rather or not Phil might putt better with a heel weighted putter

That subject was soon pretty much ignored while you guys rag on the number 2 player in the world and the second most productive player in the last two decades.

He is playing fine his tee to green game is fine I just thought a putter change might help him.

The last thing I wanted was another rag on Phil thread .

This thread reminds me of the crown plaza commercial:

Person 1: "You should definitely hit it farther!"

Phil: "yeah, farther is good, I like that"

Person 2: "And Straighter!"

Phil, taking notes: "Farther and straighter..."

But Ken, back on topic :man_in_love: - I think it's a double edged sword. I think he's looking for a feel, and not quite getting it, hence the constant switches. I don't think he needs to change what he's doing, I think he just needs to stumble on that combination that works for him.

If I was gonna be person 3 in that room, I would tell him to lengthen that putter 3 inches. I think he's so bent over it's forcing him to bring his hands into the stroke, which makes him streaky. But thats the advice of someone who can't routinely break par at his local public dog track, so if I were phil, I would avoid my advice like the plague.

Which, ultimately, he's doing :)

when using this style blade putter do you have to have a gate door swing? i use an xg9 because i like the feel and shape, but i dont think i consciously have a gate door swing.

he never had a 32 in putter, it was a 33 1/2, and yes he did lengthen it to 35 so just chill

People are so nieve when it comes to bagging on pros for changing clubs...Look how often we all change our sticks and its THEIR JOBS.

They spend hours on the range, pracy green or short game areas so do you actually think for one second they are going to game somthing that they are not comfortable with? Is it an impossible notion to think that Phil is comfy with all 20+ putters he owns, but just on some days he 'prefers' the feel of an insert as the greens are fasters or slower????

I mean come on people....these guys dont just whilly nilly swap clubs around. Its not a knee jerk reaction. Its calculated and lots of thought has gone into it
