Hawaii Golf Course Conditions & Reports

Get current and past reports regarding courses state wide!
I figured I'd start this topic. I'll pin it later on the top.

I always get pm's regarding course conditions and the best times to come to Hawaii. My answers are pretty much the same, depending on the time of year, aerations schedules and of course our "Winter" months where there is always a 50-50 chance of rain. I figured the best way to give people an idea of our course conditions is to set up a topic regarding them.

Please stick to only giving course conditions, weather reports and no commentary. After about a year or so, this topic will probably give all the tourist as well as locals an idea of what to expect from the courses during certain time of the year.

So if you played anywhere...go ahead and post the course/weather conditions! :good:

Royal Kunia.

Course Conditions: Greens were running much smoother and faster then they have one month ago. Fairways were very nice. Rough was thicker then usual. Oddly in the past I've never felt the rough grab the club as much as yesterday.

Weather: Sunny conditions in the morning. Turned to rain in the afternoon after 2pm.

Barbers Point....1045am tee time

Weather- rained on the back 9

Play- Slow...4.5hr round

Conditions- Much better then expected. Probably due to the tournament they just had. Greens were smooth. Not very fast but rolled pretty true. Fairways, greener then I've seen in ages. Rough pretty non-existent.

Pearl CC 8:00am

Nice and sunny with occasional gusts, but mostly placid conditions.

Fariways were in pretty good condition, save for the build up of old grass clippings in certain spots.

Rough lining fairways was pretty well trimmed, but rough around the greens was a little patchy and deep.

Greens were fair. They were a little slow in most spots, with lots of bumps and areas that looked like weeds or odd strains of grass. Seems the greens have not fully recovered from aeration and/or the weed killer incident. Definitely not the "glass" greens that most of us have come to expect from Pearl.

Overall, still a challenging and enjoyable place to play.

Leilehua Golf Course

Sunny, with breezy trades throughout the day.

Play was a little slow, but that may be due to the skill level of the group in front. ~ 5 hours

Course is in pretty good condition. Fairways were well manicured, but some of the rough looked a little deep. As usual, the wind was definitely a factor and makes shots into the wind play quite long.

Greens were a little slow and just a tad bumpy. Word is that the greens were aerated 3 weeks ago, so take this rating with a grain of salt, they anticipate that the greens will improve with a bit more time.

10/18 - Pearl Country Club

Rough was deeper than normal. Lost a ball in the rough, and had a hard time locating several others. Greens were rolling OK, a little on the slow side, especially for Pearl. They are redoing the right side of the 18th green and there were some bare spots on the edges of several greens.

10/24/08 Royal Kunia

Weather- Overcast all day. Slight drizzles but nothing that stopped play. It did look like it was going to storm all day but it passed over us.

Play- Fast...comfortable 4 hour pace.

Conditions- Very nice playing conditions. Probably the only fault I noticed was the inconsistency in green speed. Other then that, nice day in Kunia.

In a word, BEAUTIFUL. The course is immaculate. The greens were fast and perfect. This course has a lot of bunkers and all the many I happened to get in were in great shape. The drink cart comes around several times during your round and all the non-alcoholic drinks are free - as are the cookies at the end of the ninth hole. If there aren't any cookies left ask the drink cart person.

Big Island, Makalei. 11/04/08

Course was in great condition. The Peacocks were out in force on at least half the holes. The greens are fast and in great condition. Unfortunately, a lot of the bunkers have small 3-4 mm to 2-3 cm rocks in them. Most of the rocks are lava cinders, so not too hard, but any rock is hard on wedges. Views were good, but the VOG was blocking the usual great views that are normally available.

Big Island Country Club 10/24/08

Played in the afternoon and the wind was nuking. The fairways and greens were in good shape.

This course has numerous 'blind' tee shots. I recommend you play with someone who has played here and is familiar with the course. There were a lot of Turkeys, Erkles, and Goats about and the views were pretty good. The winds were sucking in the VOG so that limited the views. One of the par threes on the back has a temporary tee box which was more like a patch of dirt than a tee box. They had re-sodded the normal three tee boxes which were not ready for play. The driving range here is mats and they were not in top shape.

Fairways...very nice.. rough still deep

Green...better then the last time. Consistent speed throughout.

Coral Creek - Got out for the early bird special (before 8 AM its cheaper) Course was pretty soggy throughout the day, guess they have had some rain. Grass clippings all over some the fairways (not all, but enough for me to notice) greens were in ROUGH shape They had one green closed for aeration but had another hole open for play. the rough was shorter than the last time I played there. pace of play even at that early hour was 5.25 hours.

weather: warm and slightly overcast, breezes about 10-15 MPH

Nov 9, 2008/ 1016 hrs starting time

Royal Kunia ...yet again.

Fairways...very nice.. rough still deep

Greens...Getting better all the time. Putts rolled fairly well and speed was pretty consistent.

Speed of Play....Weekend play is usually a little slow and all the club play and rain made things worse. About 5 hours 45 minutes to complete 18 holes.

Weather...Heavy rain off/on with strong gusts.

Waikele 8am Tee Time. Finished in 4:30, pretty fast for Waikele on the weekend.

Greens were pretty nice and fairly consistent. Rough was average and fairways were decent and not as muddy as usual. Light wind/no rain. This was actually a pretty enjoyable round at Waikele compared to my previous experiences there.

11-15-08 Kapolei GC 12:08pm Tee Time.

Ominous clouds that drenched us the last four holes. Rain hit the course the night before so the fairways were muddy and spongey. When you hit the green, you definately left a pitch mark (why can't others fix theirs?!)

Rough was fair, green rolled about what you would expect for Kapolei. Just about the same as the practice green, but, marked up. Sand was very heavy and wet.

Round was fast for a weekend totaling 4:30. :clapping:

11-16-08 Navy/Marine

Driving range was closed due to saturated ground on the range

Course was in good realtively good shape, but a tad soggy around the greens on some holes.

Played the back nine holes in 3 hours. played the front nine (by myself) in 70 minutes (practiced chipping from different spots on all the greens.

wind was about 15-20 MPH

They had a contest that you paid 3$ into and if you hit the green on the par 3 12th (played 170 today) you get a 20$ coupon towards a turkey. Happy to report that I am now one turkey richer! Thought that was very nice of the course to do that.

Wailea Blue - Course was in good condition, but the greens were a little bumpy due to spike marks. Other than that, a mild breeze and overnight rain made it very muggy. Vog in the air due to the southerly winds.

Makena North - Course was in good condition. Play was a little slow for Maui, 5 1/2 hours at 8:00 in the morning.

23 November

Navy/Marine Golf Course-It rained all day yesterday so the range was closed again. There course drained very well though. Hardly any standing water or soggy spots. The greens were slower than usual and pace of play was slow as s*** as usual (5 hours) Wind was fairly strong 25plus MPH wind gusts.

Dec 1 Pearl CC

8:43 am. Finished fast, in 3:30.

They aerated some fairways and I think they sanded the greens about two-three weeks ago, but, today they were NICE and smooth. Rough was kind of thick, but, was able to flop a few out close from the shortside. Bunkers were wet and packed. Overcast the whole round, but, amazingly no rain. Range was closed.

4 December

Nagorski Golf Course (Ft. Shafter) - course conditions: rough-non existent greens-inconsistent wind- strong and persistent.

pace of play 2 hours 15 minutes to play 6 holes. No marshall on the course. pace of play was the worst I have ever seen in my life. It was an absolute travesty. I will never play there again.

Played Olomana Golf Links in Waimanolo on Friday December 5th. Teed off at around 7am. For the first four holes it was cart path only. The course was in fairly terrible shape. Lots of casual water on the Fairways. Greens were very very slow, with lots of grass sticking to the balls. Finished the round in about 4 hours. Beautiful scenery however, and enjoyed a pitcher of beer and some chicken with my playing partner in the restaurant on top of the clubhouse afterward.

Hawaii Prince, 12/13/2008

8:04 tee time

Overcast and a little bit of a breeze, but no rain until after we were done.

Greens were very good considering how much water they had. Very smooth, a touch slow, and uber-receptive.

Fairways were wet, but not oversaturated at all, except for a few low lying spots.

Rough was non-existent.

Play was very fast until the last few holes, overall only took a little more than 4 hours.

Dec 29, 2008/ 1230hrs starting time

Navy-Marine

Fairways...pretty nice.. rough seemed a little deep. I was surprised that it was Cart Path Only, since only a few spots looked to be damp or muddy.

Greens...pretty consistent speed throughout, but they were a tad slow.

Speed of Play....Decent. round took slightly longer than 4hours

Weather...It was a nice day, pretty sunny throughout. Mid 70's with just a very slight drizzle before we teed off and a another slight drizzle when we finished. It was rather windy, which made a few holes play pretty long.

Range....Closed and it looked like they had pumps to drain the water downrange.

Overall, the course was in good shape and it was nice day to play golf.
