NEW PING REDWOOD ANSER FINISH!!!

Deerslayer

Recommended Posts

I hated the stock nickel finish.....this one ROCKS!
My son has a Ping Redwood Anser as one of his many putters. (His mainstay is a SS cameron) He liked the looks of the original anser putters with the sound slot. I had hoped I could send his redwood anser to Ping WRX and have them cut a sound slot and get rid of that nickel finish. No way would they do ANYTHING to that putter with the nickel plating. I looked around and found Colbert Putter Plating and exchanged a few emails with Kevin. I told him what I wanted and after looking at his site, decided to add my son's logo on the putter to personalize it a bit more. I do all of my own paint fill, so I asked Kevin to just do the refinish and custom work and I would do the paint fill. I got the head back today and all I can say it WOW! This is a new finish that he came up with and described it to me and I thought it sounded great. It exceeds what I thought. I almost don't want to paint fill this head now! I may do some translucent fills so it does not take away from the finish.
THANK YOU KEVIN! You will be recieving my next project shortly!
Pics don't do this finish justice!

just curious on why go thru all that trouble when the redwood line has had a black finish as an alternative for a long time now?

Isn't that cheaper than having to send something off?

The Redwood Series pays tribute to the home of the original PING putter—Redwood City, California.

Milled Performance

Made from 303 stainless steel with two finish options—Black Nickel or Black Satin—the series offers both classic and new model shapes designed for players seeking the very best.

Looks nice what is the new finish called? It kind of looks flamed to me.

Though much is taken much abides;
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
- Lord Tennyson

This putter was bought before the black satin was even available, and I am not a fan of the black satin stock finish on the Redwood. It does have a different feel from the nickel also. It wasn't that expensive to have done what I did either! If I or my son wanted a putter that looked like thousands of others, we would have bought one like the pic you attached.

I am not sure what he calls the finish. It is an oxidized finish though, not a heated finish. I will find out and post.

Dogle,

It started out as a school project, and now turned it into his own logo, it is actually just his initials "S N" Here is Stratton's logo now and what it started out as:

design on the left was the first idea, the one on the right is what he has changed it to:

StrattLogo1.jpg

i don't see the "n"...

and may i suggest putting a white sightline in to assisst aiming? i made mine black on my studio style because of glare issues in sunny days... just some clear tape and a marker...

Nice. That finish looks good! I like the look of it verses the 3x look. Almost has a fade to it and you can still see the metal. It does'nt have that painted look.

He's working on an sc newport 2 for me and explained that this new finish allows for the mill marks on the face of the putter to be seen better than say the 3x. Course it also reduces glare, which is my primary reason for having it done. Not to mention his reputation...

But yeah, hats off. That putter looks great. I think either dirty white paint or even no paint. I like it!

NY,

the "N" is pink, **** your head over to the right like Forest Gump and it will appear before your very eyes!

I just did a translucent red and translucent blue paint fill once it drys and I will add some pics. His school colors are red/white/blue, so now he has had me re-paint fill all his clubs from lime green to red/white blue

Cool looking putter...I agree I like it better than the black finish that comes from Ping...

What kind of paint did you use for the translucent red and translucent blue paint fill??

Thanks,

Ken

Here are the pics with translucent red and translucent blue with a white sight line. I think it looks pretty slick.

~It is not cheap looking~ I think solid colors would be too much. I would like to try clear mixed with white, but it is like Stratton likes it right now, so for the time being......this is how she will be:

I will go over this fill with clear to add more gloss also. On a dark background the translucent paint gives these deep darker shades. On his Scotty, this paint looks TOTALLY opposite.

I use acrylic enamel with needle point dispensers. I do lots of clubs for everyone, not just putters either!

No problem Triton,

The sound slot gives the putter a completely different feel and sound. Putt with an Anser with the Sound Slot and without and you can definately feel and hear a difference. It is not a drastic difference in sound, but it has a little high pitched "ping" to stock sounding head.

My son has a old cast Ping anser with a sound slot and always asked why the Redwoods didn't have them. Not too expensive to have done either. Once I finish the putter tomorrow, he will spend hours in his room test driving it.

Oh wow, that finish looks way better in your most recent pictures with the paint done. It does look to me more like a chromatic bronze / torched type finish. I like it. Coming from Kevin, is that a plated finish then? Aka, nearly zero maintenance? I might have to look him up for that if so.

Does anyone else think the pictures look different? The second set appears to have more shine.

YES there is more shine: 1)First set of pictures were taken mid-day in the shade with a flash

2)Second set of pictures are taken in the same location, but at sunset with no flash. After the paint fill dried, I wiped the head with an oil cloth. I do that to every oxidized finish putter. The "shine" will only last a couple of minutes however. As for the paint fill, it is VERY glossy, being translucent and it looks "wet" at all times.

Indian,

The second set minus the "shine" I will take some more pics this evening of the completed putter shaft & all when I get home.
