Golf glove leather conditioning

Recommended Posts

just experimenting with oils on leather, etc.
Hey guys! this is my first post! :)

Not sure if this is the right place, but anyways I just wanted to share this with you guys. Anyways I had a few worn spots on my golf gloves and I was thinking that maybe I could fix or make the leather softer. You know when you have a golf glove and after awhile from lots of hitting the leather gets very slippery and kind of loses its grip. I think it's because of loss of moisture. Also if your hands sweat there is salt in your sweat and this may take away the oil and moisture which keeps the leather soft. Also if you like playing in the rain and your gloves get wet, after they dry, your gloves feel very rough and need to be "broken in again". This happens because maybe the leather loses it oil, etc. Anyways I was at home and I've been using lotion on my hands because they are very dry and I thought maybe about putting lotion on the golf glove (sounds ridiculous but I tried anyways). I put the lotion and rubbed it in real good so and then I felt the leather and guess what? it felt soft again. I don't want you guys to ruin your golf gloves or anything, but maybe this is a way help increase the longevity of your golf gloves. I think some conditioning of the golf glove will help them last longer and also give you some extra grip. Anyways I've tried lotion and it worked well, just make sure you rub it in really well and next time I will try baseball glove leather conditioning to see if it works better.

Welcome to the forum!

I hate to be negative, but putting oil on your golf is a really bad idea. It will eventually collect on your grips and ruin them as well. Gloves are very thin and they don't last forever. I usually go thru a dozen or so a year and have learned to accept it. I usually change mine every few holes to keep them from getting too wet (either because of sweating or the rain) and store them on the golf cart rather than in the bag while they are drying. My golfs usually don't wear out, but I hate it when they begin to look nasty.

I think the biggest cause of glove wear is gripping the club to tightly. This is also a leading cause of many swing problems.

Good advice above......gloves only last so long, esp. in Houston!!...and you definatley don't want to add oils/lotions that will end up on your grip.

My advice.....stock up!!! That's what I do. A few times a year, stores like Golfsmith have deals on 100% cabretta leather gloves and I buy a lot of them.....like 10-15. Golfsmith's house brand is actually VERY GOOD and when on sale can be as cheap as $5-6 each. Another good place to buy excellent cabretta gloves is MasterGrip. They are $12.95 each, but are Buy One - Get One Free.

Lastly, make sure your glove fits properly. Gloves should be very tight.

I tried oil and lotions before just for the heck of it (hey, if it's ruined anyway...) but no luck.

The best thing I found so far is...spit. Just rub that in before a round. Perfect. Or better gloves.

I'll usually buy 3 or 4 at a time and then rotate them every round. Check on ebay for package deals. I got three footjoy FJ3's for $27 shipped.
