Seven clubs or fewer?

Recommended Posts

Do any of you fellow senior-types carry a 7 club or few bag regularly. After playing a few quick 9 hole rounds with 7 or so clubs, I've "discovered" that I rarely miss the 7 I left in the trunk. Right now, I kind of favor a driver, 3 wood, 4, 6, 8, PW, and putter. My carry bag weighs about 2 lbs. I haven't weighed the whole set (strange to admit being an old backpacker) but I'd guess it couldn't weigh much more than 10 lbs, total. I usually use my Sun Mountain for my full bag but I don't think I am any more tired carrying the 7 club set up than when I push my big set around.

Anyone else out their a 7 club or fewer regular?

Normally play with 8 or 9 Hickory shafted clubs. This makes walking easier and my round is much more enjoyable. I have been using these clubs for past 3 years and found my handicap index (15) is only couple of points higher than when I blasted away with my TaylorMade and Ping's.

Until my mid twenties, I still did the odd numbers only. sw, pw, 9, 7, 5, 3, 3 wood, 1 wood, putter..9! too many!!! (I have 14 now..wtf)
When I finally got a full set of Prima Ping knockoffs, I had so many clubs it took a spell to get with the program.
Funny, I don't really practice half shots or 3/4 turns except with wedges it seems. I do score better now tho.

The first set of clubs (store bought) had a 2 & 4 wood, the odd irons (3-5-7-9) and a putter. I later bought a sand iron and played with these for several years (wasn't too serious a golfer in those days). I don't remember the brand but is was a department store purchase. Probably good for you to do this as it will cause you to learn to make different shot than you do with a full set. But today I use a full bag.

62 years old qualifies me as a Senior, right? :taunt:

I carry the 7 clubs you see in my sig. My 7 & 9 irons are graphite shafted G series PINGs and my SW is an old Eye 2+.

I shoot to the same handicap (11) with these 7 as I do with 14. When carrying 14, I ended up using these 7 clubs for 99% of my shots anyway. With these clubs, a few balls and tees, my PING Moolite bag weighs just a few pounds.
You got your AARP card right?? LMAO :) I think you are qualified. A lot of times if you play the same course a lot you will have about 7 clubs you use a lot. When I play my home course and play vintage I carry about 7 clubs but I do play the senior tees of course I am 58 but with vintage clubs it is too long for me from the whites (mid tees). Actually if people wrote down what clubs they hit on an average round on their home course they would find out the same thing

I play mostly with 5 or 6 max. Depending on the clubs and courses, usually a 3W, 6I, 8I, PW, and putter, maybe add a driver for six clubs, or leave out the 3W or 6I when carrying the driver. A nice easy carry for exclusive walking.

I play as well or better than with a full set, been minimalist for a decade or so. I won't criticize anyone for the latest fitted, 14 club second mortgage sets, but scores have not reflected the high technology of our present era.

I'm not a senior-type, but I believe golf should be walked... and it's much more enjoyable with a light bag, not to mention the skill/ fun involved with playing a small bag.

I'll be trying the odd/ even sets this spring depending on the course and longest par 3 on the course.

All of my rounds on my handicap tracker for 2 years now have been with 5 clubs. Virtually the same scores as when I played a full set. I love the challenge of play and the ease of carry you get with a minimal setup.

Currently carrying my winter set: 3W, 4H, 6i, 8i, PW, Putter
Often play a 1 club round (about once per month). Good fun.

Having a year of operations and injuries I'm going down this route. I really don't see any difference in my game between 5, 6 & 7 iron.....Just a few yards (not a long hitter by any means). I enjoying carrying much more than pulling or pushing, so my pencil bag is now:

driver - titleist about 12 years old now
my beloved old ram 23 degree 7 wood
Soon to be purchased 28 degree hybrid (not sure what yet)
7 & 9 iron - old yonex
Sand wedge - ping I3 blade
Putter - 1967 bronty rustler

I just enjoy playing now, not too bothered about getting my handicap down as those days are gone for me......Just like having fun and only having and few easy hitting clubs is great fun!

I've got a ping eye 2 7 wood which I'm using, but I might just get a 5 iron hybrid (it an Xmas present after all) just something different really. Plus my ping eye 2 7 wood is really banged up, been a great servant thou!

If you don't mind, I'd recommend trying persimmons. Cheap to try, especially if you're looking for fairway woods. It'll sound and feel great.

I played the last couple months with just a Divnick adjustable iron and either a GBB or a 3W, 2 clubs. Almost played even par for nine holes, missed a 1 1/2 footer. The adjustable iron is a bit tough to putt with, but I've made some amazing putts with it. It evens out.

I've gone out with just the iron, but is just not long enough off the tee.

This is good stuff. I can relate when it comes to being a short knocker and not seeing much difference in distance in the irons. In fact a regular loft driver like 10.5 or 9.5 I will lose distance vs 15° or even 19°.

Wriggles you are my hero, no way I could play 2 clubs and I only carry 5.
Thank you. The Divnick is a great club. It plays ALMOST as good as a regular iron. Anything below the five iron setting is a hit or miss. The seven iron setting to the wedges are fantastic, just allow for less distances than regular irons.

Before the Divnick, I had the Universal. Mr. Moore, the inventor, passed away a few years ago. Seems the business was sold to someone in New Zealand. I still have the Universal. Parts were sent free when Mr. Moore was around, but now, I wonder how much the guy in New Zealand charges, and postage probably is in the stratosphere, let alone exchange rate fees, etc. I'll check on it at some point.

I also had an original Adjustable from the 1960's. Not that great. I gave it to a pal some years ago, he doesn't use it. Don't know whether he kept it.

Minimalist or bust!

Yep same here, my driver is 10.5 with regular graphite shaft. In fact all my clubs are now regular graphite......I do love hitting my driver, probably my best club now in terms of strike and straightness. Couldn't go lower in degree, I'd go everywhere!

For 2016 I will be playing a Sunday bag full time again. I just love it. Minimalist golf has become my hobby. This year my 5 club set will be tweaked with the addition of a three wood. It will replace my 5w club to space my lofts out a bit at the top of the bag.
